Bottle-conditioned beer obtained from the Pitfield Beer Shop. BB Oct. 2006. According to the label it contains orange, nutmeg, four malts, and coriander...
A: served in a goblet it pours a deep ebony hue, coming with a thick (2cm) and frothy beige-hued head sustaining for more than three minutes and finally settling to a thin layer of foamy cap throughout the drink, leaving quite tight and even sheets of lacing--ju...st handsome!
S: as spicy as malty upfront--mixing of nutmeg, cinnamon, star-anise, curacao peel, coriander seed and slightly medicinal...the whole bunch of mixed spice sits on top of a profound roasted maltiness against a deeply chocolatey backbone. The overall complexity is beyond description, smooth texture given a sharp coriander kick at the back. Just sensational!
T&M: a mouthful of roasted maltiness is quickly followed by an intensifying flow of spicy bitterness mixing nutmeg, slightly char flavour of roasted barleys, bitter dark chocolates, and a residual taste of roasted nuttiness; the bittersweetness of roasted malts floods wide and deep down the palate with lots and lots of spiciness to follow, resulting in a texture not unlike quite a few Chinese herb medicine soups I've had when feeling ill. To say so is not to discredit this beer but to bring up the point that it's very complex and deep-running in the mouth. Finish is lingering softly chocolatey and bitter, with some woody hoppy elements to add to the overall complexity. The mouthfeel is consistently silky smooth but not boring, given the constant kick of spicy flavour at the back.
D: hellu'va spiced stout this is~~ I haven't tried many beers of its kind, but this one quietly outshines Nethergate's Umbel Magna (a "coriander version of Old Growler", some say), which is impressive enough. A beer with such subtleness and depth, its flavour is however bound to be disagreeable for people with different preferences. But for me it's by far the most enjoyable spiced stout/porter I've encountered, hence such high score. Try it and make up your own mind!
