Formerly Three Hundred Year Old Ale/Battle Of Britain Ale

A classic in the true tradition of Old Ales brewed in the heart of the ancient Three Hundreds of Aylesbury. Satisfyingly dark but not impenetrable, good body and a long pleasing finish. The carefully balanced blend of dark roast with pale malts and classic Fuggles and Goldings hops produces a complex balanced beer which in maturity releases intriguing aromas and flavours, hinting even at roast chestnuts.

a Few bottles from King's Head in Aylesbury. Red copper, big tan head slowly shrinking to lasting dense top. Aroma rich fruits and bread. Taste fermenting fruits, faintly sour with sweetness with gentle woody and tea bitterness. Rich and complex. Excellent. Soft feel with tinge of oiliness

500ml bottle.
L: Clear, russet colour (dark brown with a reddish orange tinge). Two fingers of creamy, off-white head leave rings of lacing.
S: Malt. Clean & sweet.
T&F: Lightly smokey, fruity, nutty, semi-sweet malt. Hop bitterness starts light but builds over time. Lasting, treacle & aniseed aftertaste. Rounded mouthfeel with a dry finish.
O: Rich, smooth, complex & malty. A mouthful of Autumnal morning mists & evening sunshine. Highly enjoyable.

This review is for the Three Hundred Year Old Ale which I believe is different from the Battle of Britain Ale. On cask, the Three Hundred is seasonal. It can be purchased at the brewery in various volumes; I bought two pints and consumed it over the ensuing 48 hours. Colour is quite dark rich chestnut with a glint of red in the light. Aroma is rich and malty. On the palate it has excellent body and complexity; it makes an impact. Beautifully smooth and highly drinkable in the cask format. Complex mixture of malt and caramel components, a touch of bitterness and aromatic hop. Highly recommended.
