Definitely rich in colour and aroma. My ideal winter warmer presents spices at first sniff, and Howitzer fits the bill on this count. I found that it lost me somewhat towards the finish - there was a off-dry sweetness instead of a warming booziness. I picked a bomber of this up to wrap up a great evening at Brewster's - they have definitely upped their game when it comes to choice and creativity.

20oz glass at the Edmonton Oliver location. Described by the manager as an 'old' ale, but I'm going with the name, and the fact that it was brewed this year.

This beer appears a clear, bright ruby red amber hue, with one chubby finger of bubbly, loosely foamy, and somewhat creamy beige head, which leaves some melting iceberg lace around the glass as it lazily recedes.

It smells very much like gingery banana bread, chocolate chips, doughy caramel malt, a touch of white pepper and clove, and a soft herbal, grassy bitterness. The taste is semi-sweet, grainy caramel malt, booze-soaked banana chips, subtle earthy yeast, a touch of licorice root, muddled seasonal spices, and a suggestion of metallic warming alcohol.

The bubbles are pretty involved in the basic structure that probes my various palates, the body a decent medium weight, and more or less smooth, the alcohol starting to badger and worm its way in. It finishes on the sweet side, the complex caramel malt still entertaining the beaux gestes of the surviving spices.

Overall, a pleasantly engaging and spiced-up winter ale, one typical of many producers come late fall. Easy to drink, and not too outwardly boozy - a sort of session beer for Christmas, as it were (good for at least a couple rounds among friends, eh?).
