20oz pint at the Oliver Square location - Gunther's current small batch seasonal offering.

This beer appears a murky, brown dishwasher colour, with a thin cap of wispy and faintly bubbly off-white 'head', which leaves a small berm of surface hugging lace around the glass as things slowly abate.

It smells of mildly smoked porcine meat, gritty and grainy caramel malt, a lesser spicy wheatiness, some tame dark orchard fruitiness, and a wee earthy and floral noble hoppiness. The taste is semi-sweet, grainy and doughy caramel malt, wheat crackers, some free-agent ashiness, singed apples and pears, bruised bananas, a laid back earthy yeastiness, and more gentle leafy, herbal, and floral green hop bitters.

The carbonation is quite understated in its lazy-seeming frothiness, the body a solid middleweight, and generally smooth, no char really present to make any fuss here. It finishes off-dry, and more caramelized and fruity than anything smokey.

Overall, this is not a bad brew, but for something with both 'smoke' and 'rauch' in its name, the char quotient is noticeably lacking. Maybe they didn't want to offend the average holiday party imbiber, or the smoked malt was just not all that much so. Whatever, do not go into this one expecting Bamberg in a glass.
