20oz pint at the Edmonton Meadowlark location, post rainy soccer practice, o solo mio. Gunther's latest German small batch offering made at Oliver Square.
This beer appears a clear, very dark cola-tinted brown colour, with one skinny finger of wispy and faintly bubbly off-white head, which leaves a few instances of ocean plume lace around the glass as it quickly blows off.
It smells of lightly roasted, semi-sweet caramel malt, some muddled dark orchard fruitiness, further free-range ashy notes, and some citrusy, leafy, and floral hop bitterness. The taste is bready and doughy caramel malt, bittersweet cocoa powder, wet char, bruised black stone fruit, a hint of Scandinavian anise candies, and more leafy, weedy, and musky floral verdant hoppiness.
The carbonation is adequate in its palate-assuring frothiness, the body a solid medium-heavy weight, and generally smooth, with a wee airy creaminess arising as things warm up a tad around here. It finishes off-dry, the still gently smoked malt carrying the lingering day.
Overall, this is an agreeable and approachable version of the sub-style, as this German expat brewer has encouraged a soft Bamberg touch to the smoke levels herein. Sort of a strange thing to release as the weather finally turns warm in our part of the world, IMHO, but that's never really stopped these guys before.
