20oz glass at the Edmonton Oliver Square location.
This beer appears a clear, dark bronzed amber hue, with one skinny finger of mildly frothy and creamy tan head, which leaves but a few instances of ocean plume lace around the glass as it slowly melts away.
It smells of bready, doughy caramel malt, a hard water flintiness, subtle black orchard fruit notes, hints of wet ash, and earthy, leafy, and somewhat musty hops. The taste is bready, gritty caramel malt, a further biscuity graininess, a sense of Deutsch gasohol, flitting dark Okanagan fruit, wet stone paths, and plain weedy, grassy, and floral hops.
The carbonation is nice and peppy in its frothy and fizzy emanations, the body a solid middleweight, and generally smooth, with a wee airy creaminess arising right from the get-go. It finishes off-dry, with a well moderated malty sweetness, and some stellar understated noble hops.
Once again, Gunther comes through with a very enjoyable old-school German standard - malty, yeah, yet not overly sweet, somehow. Easy to put back on a thankfully heat-reduced summer afternoon, one where no one seems aware of the newness of this former Brewsters staple, which is apparently a style sought after by expats and natives alike around here.

Gunther is making fine seasonals at the Oliver Square branch this is everything an alt should be and better than many of the examples I have had from Dusseldorf. Dry peppery maltly and hoppy. I brought a keg for the playoffs and I look forward to his Maibock which is the next seasonal

Had a visit to Brewster's for supper today and tried this seasonal out. It is a decent looking beer, dark brown with lots of redness to it. It had a thin beige cap by the time it reached the table.
The smell was a bit herbal tea, and a bit of molasses. I could also smell bitter hops. Didn't impress when I smelled the sampler, but when I got a pint, the smell was nice.
Taste is dominated by hops. The flavour profile made me feel like I was drinking more of an APA than an Alt. There is a bit of the molasses left, but mostly you'll taste a mix of bitter hop flavours and tea leaf. I was hoping for more of a balance here.
Mouthfeel was not bad, with a little bit of body and adequate carbonation. Nothing too special.
I found this one was a little slow to go down. May have something to do with the fact that I was craving something a little sweeter. All in all it is worth a try.
