The latest rotating seasonal beer at Brewster's. Served in a standard pint glass. Description (as per website): This English-style brown ale exhibits flavours of chocolate and toffee with a dark fruit complexity. Coined 'double chocolate' because, in addition to using chocolate malt, this beer is aged with rich cocoa nibs. Get some while it lasts.
I added as an American Brown, due to the additional chocolate.
Mahogany brown color, this tan head. Decent retention, some thin, stringy lace. Sweet malt smell, with some chocolate. Sweet, milk chocolate, like a candy bar. Taste is dominated by this same sweet chocolate, some roasted character. Very much reminded me of Floris Chocolat. Some toffee and dark fruit flavor at the end. Body and mouthfeel are a bit thin, but this keeps it drinkable, and not overly cloying or sticky, dispite being quite sweet.

Named for the head brewer at the Calgary brewing location, this 'Robert Walsh Double Chocolate Brown Ale' is certainly a mouthful to say. It is made with chocolate malt, and aged with chocolate nibs, to explain the remainder of the name.
This beer appears a clear dark ruddy amber colour, with one finger of soapy beige head, which leaves some spotty, random swaths of lace around the glass as it quickly recedes. It smells fairly strongly of dry powdered chocolate, and some mild floral, earthy hops. The taste is light dry baker's chocolate, some biscuity toffee malt, and dusty, leafy hops. The carbonation is soft, the body medium weight, smooth, and somewhat ethereal, and it finishes clean and crisp, with a bit more dry chocolate.
I've never tasted a chocolate-infused beer that looks like this. A clear, crisp red ale, but with an overt chocolate character. Interesting, and tasty enough in the end, but a bit too subtle for the "Double" moniker.
