A pint at the Edmonton Oliver location.
This beer appears a clear, bright bronzed amber hue, with one finger of frothy beige head, which leaves a wash of spooky paint splash lace around the glass as things sink away.
It smells of lightly toasted caramel malt, a bit of breadiness, some drupe fruitiness, and very mild noble hops. The taste is big biscuity, crackery caramel malt, with a heady dose of toffee, light ash, dry apple, and crisp, dry earthy, leafy hops.
The carbonation is a bit tight, but generally settles to a nice hum, the body a decent medium weight, and mostly smooth, just a wee flintiness skulking about. It finishes on the dry side, the malt tailing off to a fair degree, as the crispness steps it up a few notches.
An agreeable enough dunkel lager, Gunther's still got it going on. Well-rounded, and worthy of a few sessions, should that be the wind's direction.
