Sadly, Pacific Rim’s Shipwreck Stout appears to illustrate yet another example of a fine brewpub with a faulty bottling system. This, for me, is a charitable interpretation of the circumstance that recognizes the beer itself as still potentially artistic and worthy, merely hampered by a technical glitch in the bottling line.

Shipwreck Stout has a tall, active, broom handle brown head that soon recedes. The body is not fully opaque and has a hint of sunset burgundy to it. The aroma is like watered chocolate and is somewhat dry. The taste is like black cola. Shipwreck is dominated by a tight carbonation and a bland bitterness with a smooth roasty aftertaste that suggests what I believe is fine beer waiting in the wings.

The bomber of Shipwreck I drank was consumed just two days after purchasing it at the Wet Dog Café where Pacific Rim brews its beers. It left a decent chain link web of lace on the glass. I’m not ready to say Pac Rim’s stout is a poor beer. Rather, it is more likely a decent beer that is the victim of a flawed bottling operation.

**Post Script**: Sampled this on tap at the brewery. It was only slightly better at the source.
