The last of the over-hopped beers? Shark Spit has a delightfully flowery nose with a big fluffy head of creamy suds. It's fairly orange for an IPA, a characteristic it shares with its big sister, Bitter Bitch. But its searing bitterness is too much for me. Frankly, it's overkill, though I know many people appreciate overkill as a worthy quality in an IPA, and perhaps it's only honest in a beer named for a shark.

But if approached with a knowledge of what to expect, Shark Spit may serve you nicely. The body is velvety smooth and the abundant foam bears the hallmarks of lupulus and a fresh pour. Actually, I have to admit that by mid pint even the overzealous bittering came to grow on me. Either that or my palate was too scorched to notice. Though the bittering is brazen, the plush mouthfeel makes for a high quaff quotient.

Bronze colored brew with a thin white head that didn't last too long. Not much lacing on the glass.

Nice hoppy boquet, with a bit of malt in there too.

This is a nice balanced IPA. The brewer isn't trying to impress me with how much hops he can stuff into his beer. It's a pretty tasty beer.

Decent mouthfeel, nothing earth shattering. Good body.

I could drink this beer all afternoon on a nice day.

John Dalgren, brewmaster, is with youth and a gift. The Bitter Bitch Imperial IPA was in conditioning, thus the Shark Spit IPA filled the pint in front of me. It was cloudy with a golden illumination. Light did not much pass through but shone in invitation. The head was slight with more a glass stick than lace. Ahhh, the nose left oily hop resins afloat, much like rubbing fresh centennial between the palms. The mouthfeel was well supported and medium in dimension. The lingering hopstick, akin to the nose, was a sensory delight and sought after bitter. Centennial and Simcoe. This IPA was extremely drinkable, clean and refreshing. No malts taking space in taste here, but rather a subtle note of balance. I appreciate it's relative absence in both taste and hue.

The view of the Columbia River was a most wonderful backdrop. Thanks bek!

I hear the Shark Spit is on it's way to Redbones (Boston) for the NW beer months. Enjoy!
