Not sure of age on this one, but found on clearance.

Aroma is fairly malty, caramelly sweet, cardboard oxidized, with notes of grapefruit, clove, coriander, and orange peel. There's a touch of Belgian yeast funk.

Flavor is fairly cardboard laden throughout, with a lightly bitter, coriander finish. Touch of plastic. Notes of orange peel and muted citrus redeem.

Too bitter, considering the lack of other flavors to counter.

Picked this up at ShopRite Liquors in Caldwell last week, having never had this before. I wasn't a big fan of Saranac's beers for ages as they all tended to taste the same to me, but this was proof that they're finally stepping up their game. There was too much yeast in this and the phenols and spice were a bit overdone but the balance and flavor was here and this was by far the most aesthetically pleasing beer that I've ever had from them, which meshed well with the style that it was categorized under!

Loved the pour to this, as this beer had a cloudy goldenrod hue to it with a massive, foamy head that remained as wonderful rings of lacing along the back side of my pint glass. Lots of the aforementioned yeast and phenols in the nose, with even more in the taste. Those were counterbalanced by spice, tropical fruit, juicy orange, and earthy, metallic hops. Lots going on here as the carbonation and slightly oily mouthfeel served as reminders that there was an IPA component to this. A hint of coriander stuck around in the aftertaste along with the slick coating that this left behind.

There's booze in here but it was felt and not to be detected by taste. To be sure, there was sediment in the bottle as well that had to be swirled out which was a reminder that this was a Belgian IPA and not just a regular one with yeast in it. Not everything meshed well together but there was a lot to like here and in spite of the dank harshness of the hops, I enjoyed this for what it was worth...even if it called for a shot of water as a chaser.

12oz brown bottle, sample from the brewery.

Hazed dull copper hue, good showing of lacing. Smells of whole macerated oranges, spices, yeast, and ripe fruit. Smooth and flaunting some body, bready maltiness throughout. Spice and alcohol in the middle, ripe fruit and yeast as well. Pineapple skin. Kiss of Citra dankness, more flavor than bitterness. This mashup of styles works well, worth a go.

Appearance: Pours a cloudy amber color capped by an inch of foam; a few streaks of lace linger

Smell: Bready with grapefruit and coriander

Taste: Bready, on the front of the tongue, with grapefruit and lime flavors building; in the middle, the coriander and grapefruit peel take over, though the finish is overly phenolic

Mouthfeel: Medium body with moderate carbonation

Part of the High Peaks series, good to see Saranac trying their hand at some new "bigger" styles.I pour two and a half bottles into a large tulip glass,a hazed deep burnt orange color with a sticky full one finger white head atop. Some sharp grapefruit and lime zest in the aromas followed by some spiced yeasty esters.Yeasty flavors with a decent amount of phenols with light medicinal notes from the hops and sharp grapefruit rind in the finish.Pretty good,I would have liked less phenols and more hop flavors but it rounds out to a pretty good stab at the style.

I will keep this simple. Saranac has turned out flimsy beers for years. How's that for a rhyme? This one was knocked out of the park. For a Belgian IPA, I defy anyone to find one better.

I live in Utica, and want Saranac to be bragged about by beer geeks, however, historically, it's been the opposite. No more. Get this one. It is one tight, dry, malty, and hoppy concoction. Not just hop bitter, but hop aroma and flavor as well. Just might be their best effort ever. Hope that this is the trend For Saranac.
