i am blessed to have friends all over the country who save me beers to try when we get together if they find something they like, its always a treat to share something new and exciting when catching up with the boys, but the flip side of that is sometimes things get saved a little long, this one was bottled over the summer, and im not sure its held up great, no surprise given the style, but still a worthwhile beer and a cool one to try. the best parts of the mosaic seem faded off in the nose to me, the dry hop profile probably less robust than it was brand new, but it sort of devolves here into something pretty familiar from saranac, which is a relatively malty, and fairly bitter ipa, that really is what i know them for in these styles, and this one follows that trajectory, at least at this point of its life. its still quite obviously mosaic forward which is cool. more oily and bitter than i am used to from these hops, and the texture is a little aggressive, especially when it comes up to temperature a little bit. the balance of the malt is just fine, it doesnt crowd out the hops at all, and the bit of sweetness thats here i think extends this and beefs it up in a good way, i am not being critical of that here, even if its kind of what these guys always do. its not anything super interesting to me, but it checks the boxes for the style well enough. i will make a point to try this one fresher next time i get the chance, i have a feeling i missed the best of it.

edit: and another seven months in the fridge didnt do it any favors. i hate when beer gets forgotten about and then not consumed in its prime, but thats what has happened here unfortunately...

"Hints of a faded hop profile" I read in another review. My experience exactly. Mosaic is my favourite hop & I'm in love with Skadoosh IX made with Mosaic. You can just catch a hint of it in the aroma of this beer and then a little more in the taste, but not near enough. The bready & sourish malt flavours overpower the hop instead, which should not be the case based on the name of this beer & it's billing as a double IPA. I thought to myself: This is almost a good beer ... I enjoyed it ok with its tall puffy head & decent lacing, but I don't plan to have it again.

Candied orange peel, with hints of a faded hop profile. Some malt and bitterness round it out. There's a month to go on the best by bottling date but I think the beer has moved on.

Type: 12-oz. bottle
Glass: Beer Nerd tulip
From: Trader Joe’s in La Mesa (San Diego), Calif.
Price: $8.99 for a variety 2016 New Beer 12-pack
Purchased: Feb. 7, 2017
Consumed: Feb. 8, 2017
Reviewed as: American Double / Imperial IPA
Misc.: Bottled on Oct. 25, 2016; Best by March 31, 2017 at 1:28 p.m. ET

Was happy when my wife sent me a photo of this 12-pack at a recent trip to Trader Joe’s. Saranac was my gateway to craft beer and was surprised to see this variety 12-pack with all four beers ones that I had not tried yet. Throw in the $8.99 purchase price and I was in. Did not realize until I opened that the box that these were quite old. This Hoppy Hour Hero Moe.saic IPA was bottled on Oct. 25 with a best by March 31. Would have liked this at least six weeks earlier. On another note I love that .moe was some part of this brew. Was into them for a brief moment.

Poured a deep gold yellow-to-light amber murky color with two fingers of frothy white head. Some light bubbles coming up from the bottom of the glass. Good spotty lacing. Very good retention. (Sight - 3.75)

Smelled a healthy dose of Mosaic up front. Also got Citra and hints of dry Simcoe for hops. Also some pine needles, passion fruit, mango, pineapple, guava, papaya, peach skin and floral. (Smell - 4.00)

Taste followed the nose nicely. Wow, this initially reminded me of one of those sugary Vermont IPAs (not the hazy, but Sip of Sunshine, Focal Banger, etc.). Got Mosaic up front, spicy Simcoe, Citra, passion fruit, tropical fruit punch, mango, guava, pineapple, papaya, peach, nectarine and pine needles. Would love to have this fresh out of the tap. (Taste - 4.00)

Medium body. Oily texture. Lively carbonation. Long dry finish. (Feel - 4.00)

Really liked this one. Like I said, would have loved to had this fresh. Really think I underrated this a tad. (Overall - 4.00)

12 oz bottle, drank straight from it at a New Year's Party. Decent, I love Mosaic hops, so was hoping for a bit more of the tropical fruit, "joosy" elements often found in Mosaic IPAs.

Pours a vibrant and clear golden to amber color with a white head that recedes to just a memory. Smell bursts into a huge array of citrus and tropical juices. Flavor does not match the high expectations that the aroma implies. Has a much more chalky, almost artificial sweetener kind of flavor. Fell is a little thin, hides the alcohol, smooth, and finishes extremely dry. Overall, this beer had a lot of good things going for it, but came up short due to its flavor, and flavor is key of course. Cheers!

From a 12oz bottle with a best by date of 3/31/2017. Pours a copper/amber color with a slight haze. Hoppy citrus on the nose but with malty/caramel/bread undertone. Quite bitter on the palate, some of which might be from the 7.8% abv. Nice effort.

Great surprise for the price. From a brewer that is resurgent and people should pay attention. Try 24.
A- Pours a clear, light amber body with a one finger white head that has good retention only laces a little.
S- Blend citrus, pine, catty, herbal and fruity hop aroma. On fresh baked bread.
T- Catty, fruity, and earthy hops up front with notes of juicy mango, guava and citrus peel. There's a shift to a sweet element that's juicy and rich.
M- Medium body with moderate carbonation and a creamy finish.
O- Homage to Moe. Try 24. Must try for the price.

How? How could anyone sit down with this beer and possibly enjoy it?

Look: Poured into a pint glass from a bottle. Looks like water if you soaked it in cheerios long enough. The bottle is inconsistent with the rest of the Saranac bottles so it really sticks out on my Saranac display.

Smell: Smells like oranges and flowers followed by the nose hair melting scent of alcohol and straight hops.

Taste: Ever bite into an orange peel? This is that exact taste in liquid form. Extremely bitter and it stays in your mouth and throat for what seems like an eternity. Did not pair well with dinner of baked turkey.

Feel: Good carbonation paired with the indistinguishable burn of alcohol and prolonged aftertaste of the most bitter orange you've ever tasted.

Overall: I drank the other 2 that came in the variety pack for the sole reason that from a young age I was taught to waste nothing. Stay away from this atrocity.

Look: It pours golden with a white head.

Smell: It has aromas of citrus and grapefruit.

Taste: It has a strong grapefruit and citrus flavor with some floral and a hint of sweetness in the background.

Feel: It has a moderate body with moderate bitterness in the finish.

Overall this is a grapefruit and citrus IPA with a tinge of sweetness in it.

Matt Brewing Co. "Saranac Hoppy Hour Hero moe.saic ipa"
12 fl. oz. brown glass bottle, "BB MAR 31 2017" and sampled on DEC 2 2016

Wow, I did not realize this was a double IPA until I saw it listed here. Of course that makes sense though as it's got a rich, sweet malt base. It's not that bitter though, or at least the listed 75 IBUs don't come across that way within the full bodied maltiness. But let's backtrack...

In the glass it's a slightly hazy deep gold beneath a creamy head of white that settles to a short cap, and then eventually a creamy, solid surface covering. Fairly thick spots and splashes of lace are left behind, although they eventually fade as well. Still, it's got a fairly nice appearance (I think we can forgive the haze as it's probably dry-hopped).

As I poured it I could smell the hops, and a closer inspection led me to find it piney, a little catty, and tropical/citrusy with notes of apricot, mango, papaya, grapefruit, tangerine, and pineapple. It's bright, but not bold.

That combination of hop notes continue into the flavor within a sweet doughy malt. It's more piney, catty, earthy and herbal upfront with the tropical fruits coming out towards the swallow and into the lingering finish. As stated, it's not that bitter, yet it somehow finishes dry rather than sweet. Perhaps the alcohol is helping with that. It doesn't show itself clearly, but there is a definite peppery character left behind after the first half of the glass.

In the mouth it's full bodied, I assure you that, despite the fact that the neck label reads "Medium"; and a fine bubbled, slightly below or just at standard level carbonation leaves it smooth and creamy.

Forgetting the price point, which I'm assuming you'll find a bit lower than most others, it would still a great deal even if you had to pay a bit more. I wish it had more of a mosaic hop character, but I'm still happy with what it's got... not sure I've ever had a beer with quite the same hopping. Nicely done.

Pours a pale gold with a white head.

Smells of floral, citrus and tropical fruit. Star fruit, mango.

Britney floral hop up front giving way to bitter grapefruit with some ruby red notes = delicious.
It has a very slight biscuit malt middle than gives way to orange, star fruit, and mango notes, finishing with a dry hoppy flourish.

Poured into a 13 oz tulip glass not sure when it was bottled. Pours a hazy orange with a solid 2 finger sticky white head that leaves plenty of lace.

Smell is apricot, biscuit, bread, pear, lemon, and some pine.

Taste follows apricot, lemon, biscuit, breadyness, pine, and grapefruit.

Mouthfeel is a solid medium, plenty of carbonation, not really dry, and nice drinkability.

Overall this is a odd beer, not bad, just some strange flavors.

9/2...pours a cloudy orange copper, fast rising and moving foam that mostly then settles out. Woody, sandy nose. Grasses, mints, oils. Strong bitter flavor, butted against a sweet malt. Has a syrupy mouthfeel. Oily resiny swirl. Hearty IPA and tasty.

Big whiff of pine and fruit when this beer hits the glass, but then aroma becomes more muted.

Tastes dank and piney, with a mango center and notes of other overripe tropical fruits. Stiff bitterness too. Not the boldest flavor profile, but it's better than I expected, to be honest.

Slightly chewy, sticky, resinous mouthfeel.

Pretty good!

12oz bottle poured into a snifter

A- pours a light amber color with a one-finger foamy white head that has good retention and leaves a few patches of lace behind

S- nice mix of citrus, pine, herbal and fruity hop aroma. Light bready malt

T- fruity and earthy hops up front with notes of mango, guava, berries, and citrus peel. There's a sweet element to it but it's certainly not too malty. The finish lingers of pine and more fruit

M- medium body with moderate carbonation produces a foamy mouthfeel that turns into a creamy finish

O- a tasty IPA with one of my favorite hop varieties, high drinkability

Pours a nice deep honey color, persistent thick white head, decent lacing. Aroma is classis Mosaic all the way, grapefruit, piney and slightly sweet. Taste is nice and tart, no malt sweetness, nice balance. Mouthfeel is juicy and a bit thick. Finish is a little sweet oddly. This is a very solid Saranac offering and like the others have said yea, moe is a ton of fun.

12oz bottle into a pint glass
No bottling dates

Pours a slightly hazy golden orange with one fingers width of bright white head that has good retention and decent lacing. Aroma is citrusy, quite malty, and almost funky. Taste is malty, only subtle hop bitterness. Not much citrus or pine at all. Smells and tastes quite old/stale. Mouthfeel and drinkability are decent. Overall, an acceptable but not particularly good beer. My guess is that it's far past its prime. I don't usually review stale IPAs cause I don't think it's a fair reflection of the product, but when a brewery doesn't bottle date I have no sympathy and review as is. I primarily bought this beer for the label, as I'm a huge moe. fan; the label is sick but the beer is fairly meh.

12 oz bottle poured into a Demented snifter.

Pours a clear orange color with a half finger of foam. Aroma is pleasantly hoppy

First sip is full of Mosaic hop flavor. I detect a lot of blueberry notes out of this hop. Beer is nicely balanced with a firm bitterness that doesn't linger.

This may be one of my favorites to come out of Saranac. A great, well-balanced, flavorful IIPA. My only drawback is that it may not be "big" enough to stand against other IIPAs, but regardless this tastes great and is enjoyable to drink.

WOW....what a yummy beer. The good Matt family from Utica is surprising me, again!! First Disruption Nitro and now this juicy, relatively easy-drinking (D)? IPA from Saranac. Smells amazing....tastes juicy and finishes light with just the right balance of hops and malt. Will buy again. I am a total sucker for the MOE. marketing!

Beer Summit sample pour. Light orange color. Aroma is of fruity and green Mosaic hops. A new wave IPA that pleases in both the nose and on the tongue. Citrusy, dank, and fruity hops dry into a grassy hop finish and some candied maltiness. Boozier finish. I was pretty happy with this.

On tap at Barber's Grill and Taproom in Brockport, NY.

This one pours a golden orange/amber color, with a small fluffy head, and a good amount of lacing.

Smells pretty classically Mosaic, with sweet candied pineapple, blueberry, and grapefruit, and no hint of malt anywhere.

This is a really impressive effort from Saranac, not exactly a heavy hitting brewery when it comes to dank IPAs. It's possibly a little too syrupy sweet, but other than that, it's highly enjoyable. It's got a lot of pineapple, blueberry, and grapefruit flavor, with just a hint of piney bitterness.

This is decently thick-bodied, a little syrupy, with a normal level of carbonation.

This was a really nice surprise, I'd certainly order it again.

Welcome to the party Saranac. I will say this is a good sign of things to come! Though it looks like some reviewers forgot to put their beer in the fridge, or received a skunked bottle. My review and tasting notes won't add much. A definite must try, especially on draft!
