Nominally, a porter. Drinks like a Scotch Ale. Creamy smooth pour, thick tan head. Persistent lacing. Creamy mouthfeel but not thick. The alcohol wafts up from the back of your palate. Reminding you it's 11.5% abv. Easily the best offering by Saranac I've ever tasted.

This is true Nectar of the God's. The pour reveals a huge cottony brown head. The nose is huge with rye influence, like wafting a top shelf bourbon. The taste is just like the nose, dark, malty with the rye bite. It hides the ABV extremely well, so be warned... Enjoy!

On tap at The Old Toad in Rochester, NY.
This one pours a fairly dark brown, nearly black, with a very small head, and no lacing.
Smells like whiskey, and maybe a little bit of rye, and maybe a little bit of chocolate, but it smells pretty bland.
Even after letting this one warm up to a proper temperature, it was still pretty lame. It had no rich malt depth, no delineation of flavors, and no real even flavors to speak of. You expect a 11.5% BA porter to be bold and strong, but this just felt like watery whiskey, with a little bit of rye spice, and not much else. This just felt like a pretty massive failure.
This is pretty thin, and watery mouthfeel-wise, with a moderate level of carbonation.
Not a fan of this one really at all. Just a poorly conceived barrel-aged beer, seems like they just threw a poor beer into barrels and hoped it would get good.

This is a very dark beer. There is a slight bitter after taste which initially I wasn't certain I liked. However, I quickly decided it was one of the better beers I've had in a long time.

Pours black in color with a tan head. Slight taste of chocolate , vanilla, oak , and of course whiskey. Saranac has finally gotten their barrel aged brew down this time!!

This is a pilot brew only served at the Saranac museum in Utica, NY. Pours like motor oil and is completely opaque. Don't drink this cold; you need to let it warm up to let the rye flavors and the 11.5%abv come out. When it does, get ready. This is a stellar brew!
