Upstate Bohemian.

A malt forward version without the hop accent one normally expects from this style. Good, mild, clean, crisp, not Old World in approach but pleasant in it's own way.

Simply too mild for my tastes but it has it's place.

Yellow pour, good clarity, 3/4" white head. Aroma had some noble hops, minor in degree.

Highly carbonated pilsner, didn't pop with anything, hopping muted, malt muted, not even some euro lager aromas. Mineral, although the hops do seem to be the only thing present, not bad.

Saranac makes extremely pedestrian beers, this is no exception. Mild grain notes, noble hops, absent yeast impact. Easy enough for your mom to drink.

This isn't too bad, at least compared with most of the random Saranac one-off seasonals. There's a pleasant floral aroma and taste, with a clean bitterness. However, compared to German and the best American examples of the style, it certainly falls short.

Clean, pale gold beer pours from the glass, leaving a thin, off-white head that is well-retained. Pils malt lends typical aromas of bread and dough, with hints of grain and grass noticeable, and a decent amount of spicy hops as well. Bready flavors are met with grain and barley. The malt sweetness is tamed by the grassy and spicy hops in the finish. Light bodied, this pilsener is also moderately carbonated.

Aroma: citrusy Saaz hops work with bright, alluring malts--smells straight out of Eastern Europe... Appearance: swiftly effervescent, light golden body that rushes up the flute to stimulate a webbing three-finger white head... Palate: medium-bodied, slightly oily at the throat but substantial enough to be a lager... Taste: flavorful, zesty hops that awaken the tongue; refreshingly smooth, with the slightest hint of corn or hay; some banana and clove as well... Overall: pleasant, softly buffering pilsner--definitely a seasonal that I will seek out in its season...

Poured from a 12oz. bottle into a standard pint glass.
Cloudy light gold in color, with a decent two-inch head of bright white foam.
Aroma-Faint pilsner malt
Taste-Pilsner malt, bready, crisp and smooth. Very faint hop bite. More Saaz would have been more better, in my opinion. That being said, this brew is easily sessionable and would please the masses at a summer cookout.

Ba Review #145
Served On: 03/23/2012
Glassware: Pilsner Glass
Labeled ABV: -
Date/ Code: 3/31/2012

This was in the 2011 - 12 Beers of Winter mixed 12 pack.

Look: Poured a bright golden yellow color. Very clear with a consistent flow of carbonation bubbles floating upward. Head was a thin ½ finger cap of white spongy foam.

Smell: Wet grass with some citrus. Crisp hops. Aroma was very clean and crisp.

Taste: Upfront was some nice carbonated lemon peal with a sweet malt in the background. I also noticed that interesting twang that most Saranac beers seem to have (yeast maybe? or possibly a base malt they use?). Finish and aftertaste were very clean with some faint citrus lingering.

This is a nice pilsner that showed obvious signs of good quality. It always cracks me up when the Miller Lite commercials refer to their beer as a pilsner.

This beer poured out as a clear pale yellow color with a fluffy white head on top. The smell of the beer was grainy with some soft grassy notes on the nose. The taste of the beer was decent, it had some light earthy flavors mixed with a bit of sweet grain with the lager yeast finishing up. The mouthfeel was thin but had a decent carbonation to it. Overall, Not the best Pilsner out there but I found it to be a good beer to start a night with and move on from there.

Pale yellow, totally clear, smallish head, fair retention, good lace.

Classic pilsener aroma and taste; Saaz hops, grass, light floral notes, well balanced with a faintly sweet malt flavor.

Moderate carbonation, medium-thin body, a bit watery, easy to drinking. Feels like it could be a bit crisper.

Not bad, not great. Decent Pils, fairly refreshing, but lacking the clean, crisp character of the best of the style.

A- Golden, very translucent, average carbonation, little head.

S- Standard pilsner malty bitterness at first. At a closer smell slightly fruity/earthy smell, hints of pineapple.

T- Standard malty pilsener taste. Slight sweet/fruity aftertaste.

M- Light to medium bodied. Average carbonation. Drinkable.

O- Overall not a bad pilsener. Pretty nice aftertaste. Slightly above average.

12oz bottle purchased as part of the Saranac winter mixed 12-pack at Yankee Spirits, Sturbridge, MA.

Poured into a nonic, formed a 1/2" white head over the slightly cloudy golden brew. Head recedes gradually, with slow-falling lace. Aroma is lightly sweet with a vegetal tinge. Where's the Saaz?

Taste starts with pale malt sweetness, lemony in the middle, with a medium crisp bitter close. Saaz is here, but muted. Mouthfeel is pretty smooth, and drinkability is alright as well. Comes off kind of dumbed down, was hoping for a bit more depth in the flavors.

12 fl oz bottle served in a snifter, reviewed live:

A - Pours a transparent straw golden color with a thin 1 finger head (even after an aggressive pour). Retention is awful.

S - Clean barley, light spice, honey, and some very light hops. Mild scent.

T - Classic pilsner malt, unrefined cereal grain, and incredibly light grassy and spicy hops notes. It's simple, and not in a good way. A bit watery, even.

M - Light bodied, carbonated well, but a bit too slick for my tastes.

D - It's not a terrible pils, but it suffers from simplicity and fair quality. Not one I'll have again.

Saranac Bohemian Pilsner….in a bottle out of the 24 beers of Christmas Pack.

Appearance-poured out of a the bottle with a bold bright golden color. Two fingers of solid head arise and stay.

Smell-light malt with a pilsner background, a dash of hay and grain, light hops. Nothing overwhelming but well balanced.

Taste/Mouthfeel-light to medium mouthfeel, sharp palate blend of light hops and grassy character that was foreshadowed in the nose. Nice smoothness and a light finish on the tongue, the beer goes down quickly and is refreshing.

Overall-a very nice pilsner, doesn’t try to do too much but remains balanced and refreshing. A winner.

Pours a pale gold with a good amount of soft, white head that has great retention. The nose is grassy with a faint malt note. The taste is malty up front and slightly sweet, and then the Saaz hops come in and add balance and a nice earthy, grassy finish. This is a light bodied, well carbonated, very smooth beer.

This is a pretty good beer. It's brewed to style so nothing exceptional here, but it's smooth and balanced. The slight sweetness is really the only drawback.

From the 2011 Twelve Beers of winter collection:

Appearance is beautiful, golden yellow with a full white frothy head, that lasts a decent amount of time. Laces nicely. Scent of citrusy hops. Mouthfeel is clean and crisp, no aftertaste lingering. This reminds me of my grandfather's beers. Tastes of hops and lemon zest! I'm going to get another one!

12 oz. bottle, the Saranac Winter Beers finally come to the Southland, odd seeing a Bohemian Pilsner as a winter beer, but I'll take it here in CA,

A: Pours goldenrod with a firm medium white head. Leaves great lace and has really good head retention.

S: Grassy earthy hop component, notes of vegetables but in a good way, no DMS. Light malt character.

T: Direct bready malt flavour, husky toasty at times. Light hop character with a nice balance with the hops.

M: Light-bodied, quite frothy, chalky at times. Medium aftertaste in the style.

O: I've had realy good Czech style pilsners in my life so I know what the pinnacle is. This isn't that, but this is clearly above average especially in an American pils. Well made, great price, possibly the best Saranac I've had, haven't had one in a while.

Poured into a stella pint glass, color is gold with great effervescence and a nice solid off white head.

Smell is clean pilsner malt with subtle grassy hop scents.

Taste is pretty clean, solid pilsner malt profile with a nice hop bitterness; flavor is eding on the earthy side.

MOuthfeel is very crisp, solid carbonation hits the tongue nicely.

Overall, very solid beer near the other east coast pilsners but missing something.

A: A very light golden honey color. Lingering white sea foam head.

S: Has a straight forward bavarian hop smell.

T: First notes are crisp, spicy hops. This is balanced by a subtle roasted barley flavor. Notes of cloves, cinnamon and corriander.

M: light finish, not overly carbonated.

O: An average to slightly above average example of the style. Nothing to write home about.

a pretty standard czech style pils. lighter and a little more hoppy than its german counterpart. saranac does a decent job with this one, apparently adding some noble hop varieties for flavor. pours a standard golden color and has a small white head. smells more oppy than most. saaz hops? a mellow malty body and vibrant carbonation make this fairly drinkable, if unexciting. hoppy enough to go in their winter mixer. not bad, not great

Pours a deep golden color with a decent white head that dissipates slowly leaving minimal lace. Smells of bready grain with a hint of butterscotch and earthy spicy grassy hops. Taste is a little sweet and lacking enough hops. Sweet bready almost honey like malt with a smidgen of spicy hops. Medium body with a crisp level of carbonation and a sweet almost sticky mouthfeel. Decent flavorful beer, but not quite a bohemian pilsner.

light in body and flavor but has a nice compliment of hops to make it just flavorful enough to enjoy.

nice mouthfeel, crisp with a little spice. easy drinking beer good alternative to macros if you want something good thats not too intense.

A- a golden clear color with a nice white head. Extra points for the sticky lace that clings to much of my glass.

S- light cereal grain, grass, touch of corn, light saaz hops spice, malt.

t- very grainy in the front with just a whisper of hops, followed by a good malty finish that brings a fruity and bready aftertaste. The malt and hops work well together, a well balanced pils.

O- nothing groundbreaking, I prefer more hops in my pils, but this is a solid session beer non the less.

Very yellow beer with rich smells of Pilsener malt with some hop floral fruitiness. Not that much of a bite and hop spice on the initial sip but it the hop bite builds up on the tongue and leaves with a nice earthy sharp hop bitterness but not too much at all. The sweetness from the bready pilsener malt comes in to perfectly balance it.

Although I would have wanted a crisper hop bite up front it still has enough of earthy floral bitterness until the sweetness from the Pilsener malt seems to come in out of nowhere and really balance it. This is my favorite thing about this beer even with it being a general straight forward offering. The fruitiness builds from the yeast strain and from some of the hops although the hops give more of an earthy Noble hop taste more than anything. While not quite as good as the Prima Pils or Dogfish Heads My Antonia I still like this one better than European Pilseners.

Bright sunny fall day and looking for refreshment... This is a pretty decent, highly carbonated (to a fault) easy drinker. Light tan color, white head that disappeared quickly. Clean finish, fairly hopped but the carbonation is a bit much. Reminds me a bit of a higher priced, but no better, pbr. That's not a knock, I like pbr.

Standard yellow appearance with average clarity to it, crisp clean white head. Smelled of noble and saaz hops would be my guess. Nothing skunky.

Bummer, I like skunky, wasn't in the taste either. Rather plain, high carbonation excentuated the hopping and a prickly feeling, but substantive taste profile was lacking. Light mineral and grain mouthfeel. Bitterness is up. Whats the deal, they can't hop an ipa or pale to save their life, but here, they get it right, almost to the point of being on the high end, but I guess I shouldn't complain, just pointing out a weird phenomenon.
