I bought a bottle of the Birkenhead Premium lager from Bootleggers out of Sandton. The beer poured a clear rich copper with thin white head and no lace. The scent was malty with bread tone. The taste has bread yeast as a main flavor. The mouthfeel was medium in body with good carbonation. Overall the beer is good...not great....but at least drinkable.

Appearance: Orange gold, almost amber, much darker than you would expect from a pale lager. Good (well lasting), off white head that leaves good lace.
Smell: Wonderfully malty aroma, sweet and slightly nutty. Crystal malt coming through nicely with a slight caramel aroma. Definitely not a normal lager nose.
Taste: As with the smell, very interesting. Sweet and malty, again slightly nutty with hints of caramel. Only fault I can find is that it is too lightly hopped. The hops are lost behind the other flavours.
Mouthfeel: A little too light, but smooth with good carbonation.
Drinkability: Very very drinkable. Perfect for the hot South African weather.
It is so nice to find a lager with character. Well done Birkenhead, teaching the macro's a lesson or two.
