A- Pours a cherry cola color with a better than I expected head....at first. Like the label suggests, this does not retain well, leaving only behind a ring around the glass....oh well if real chocolate is used! Lacing is modest, with many little bubbles, singular, clinging to the side of the glass. Not bad overall

S- For sure, raspberries and dark chocolate are the initial aromas detected. There are underlying hints of coffee (black), blackened barley malts....not much else going on here...probably what was meant upon brewing. Nice!

T- Totally of Raspberry Chocolate cake....beautiful!! The fruitiness on the palate is jammy, and candy like. The chocolate is dark, fresh and perhaps with hints of bakers nibs mixed in....simply delicious! The toasty malt just helps to dry and balance the richness of the dessert like flavors.

M/O- Medium/full bodied and creamy delicate carbonation provide the ultimate decadence for a dessert stout. One can certainly tell that all natural ingredients were used as nothing is artificial or overpowering about this. Could I drink this all night.....why yes!! This certainly needs to be given its' props and hopefully is available down the road again!

 

 

 

Gotta go against the flow here. This was hands down one of the worst beers I've ever had. Maybe I got a bad bottle, but it was just undrinkable.

Pours just like a Coke. Same colour, same fizz, same head. Shows the same sparkle as a glass of pop.

I can smell chocolate and raspberries in the brew, but more than anything else it's vegetal. Not pleasant at all. Same flavour profile - chocolate and raspberries and veggies. This is not working for me on any level. Reminds me of badly made, waxy stale chocolate bonbons somehow.

This one goes down as pretty much a total fail for me. I'm not bothered much by extreme beers, but they need to be interesting in some way and show some sign of being properly made.

Yuck.

The label warns of poor head retention due to the use of real chocolate, and it is true. The head dissipates faster than soda pop. Color is very dark, nearly opaque.

The smell is delicious - a fresh and full raspberry aroma, but no other beer aromas are apparent. The flavor is similarly dominated by raspberry, with just a hint of malt toward the finish. The chocolate hides out but appears just at the finish - very nice touch.

The mouthfeel is thin and light, dominated by sweet raspberries. I think if the same raspberry and malt treatment were applied to a somewhat amped up stout, this could be an incredible beer. As it is, it is a pleasant sipper for a long winter's evening.

Another beer that my fiancé picked up on her recent trip to Montreal.

A: Pours a translucent black with a bit of light-brown head that doesn't stick around too long.

S: Fresh, tart raspberries with a hint of dark chocolate. A very light nose, comparable in 'weight' to a champagne.

T: Raspberry sourness right off the bat, perhaps too much, followed by some sweet and bitter chocolate notes and some signs of oxidation/a bit of a staleness on the finish.

M: Tartness of the raspberry leaves the tongue dry and wanting more, but the rather dull and stale aftertaste should definitely be improved.

D: An upgraded sense of balance would serve this beer well, but it is a unique and valiant effort from a small brewery!

"Poor head retention because of real chocolate".

A: Black with a tan head, very little retention, no lacing.

S: Plenty of chocolate & tart fruit (though I would have though it was cherries had I not known).

T: Plenty of chocolate in the flavour, along with a real raspberry flavour (not at all like a cheap syrup). An interesting roasted-tart balance with a mild bitterness. Alcohol is extremely well-hidden.

M: Well-attenuated moderate body is smooth.

D: It's a pleasant sipper.
