The wort needs to cool down before you can pitch the yeast. The coolship cools the wort and lets the bugs get in there naturally. Or at least, that's my understanding of it.

That's part of it but also the balance of bacteria and yeast in the air. I think its wild brews where they state that in the summer and hotter months there is too much lacto in the air.

So from what I can gather from the people supporting a JK RS the general feeling is, "I really like your beers and want to support you but its too much work to track them down. Can I pay you extra money for you to hold them for me so I can get them later"? Or "I buy a lot of JK beers already so 15% off would help me save money," which contradicts the argument of "I support them so I don't mind spending more money on a RS."

I guess my biggest concern is if, and I know all of this would be well off in the future, JK decided to do an RS how do you handle limited releases. Their sours are relatively hard to come by right now so if you reserve say half of your beer for the RS members that makes it harder for people who couldn't front the extra money in the beginning to obtain their beers. Its not that I can't afford to pay for an RS membership I just don't feel I should have to.

    Exclusive memberships are not advocacy.

Let's say you're really into collectable plates, and there was one a plate you really wanted, but had to be a member of this collectable plate club to get it. Would you join the club, or just complain that you should be able to get the plate regardless?

I know this site is called Beer Advocate, but it's a hobby to a lot of people, and I mentioned it already, hobbies are just luxury items. If you're not willing to invest in your hobby, you're probably not passionate enough to contribute much. (That's a hypothetical "you," not you specifically, as clearly you exhibit passion about the going-on's in the beer world.)

I would say exclusiveness contributes to advocacy. Examples: look at beers like Black Tuesday and Dark Lord. Those are big names that are exclusive, and people new to the hobby what to get them, so they trade, join RS, or go to DLD.

But what do I know, I'm a member at country clubs, yacht clubs, etc. :sunglasses:

What I'm still trying to understand is why should beer be an exclusive club? Isn't investing in your hobby also investing time, not just money? Time to go to release events and time driving to the store to get beers that you are passionate about?

If this ship is sinking then me might as well have a parade!

I just picture the lot of you advocating for a JK Whale Hunter badge tossing up ISO's like. FT: JK Brandy Vanilla Rodeo Clown ISO: Pick 4 of 5 (KH, Rare, DL Variants, KRE, and maybe Ill considered a C&C La Folie if I'm feeling nice)

Winning at all costs!!! Yea!!! Hype hype hype that train all the way to the station!

You know what is fucking great about Jester King. Fort Worth gets enough access that even us lowly serfs get a bottle or two of the good shit. I'd love for the entire state to get a taste (El Paso, Lubbock, Corpus Christi, etc.) vs. a handful of rich Texans and Austinites who will ship that beer in a second in order to win a trade.

I wish I could explain the mechanics of life, but unfortunately, I'm not that smart.

People that fly more frequently get more perks, which I think is bullshit, even though I rarely fly. See what I'm saying?

Why is everyone complaining about RS's? It helps the brewery out, they still distribute most of their beer and the people who buy in get maybe 2-3 extra perks and a discount. What's the big deal?

If 300 people give JK $300 that's $90,000 they can use to make more beer to distribute for non-RS members and help their brewery grow. In exchange the RS members get 2-3 beers that you can't get. You know why? Because it costs more money to make in big batches or is just an experimental beer. So they reward the people who invested their money in them in one lump. I don't see the complaints saying its not advocacy.

This is how I think of it too - as an investment. I'm helping put guaranteed money in the brewery's pocket, so they can keep making their beers but also have capital to grow and make MORE beers, and in exchange I get a little something extra for my money. If I decide to trade it, drink it, or pour it out for my homies is my business (just like with anything else I buy, ever)

Hell, a bunch of you just donated money to a kickstarter for Prairie, and in return will likely be getting something exclusive (Teku glass, beer named after you, etc.) that I can't get without having done so. How is this different exactly?

This. Life isn't fair. Some people are more well off than others. Tons of companies have loyalty programs that give privileges to customers who are support them.

A RS is a nice way to reward those loyal customers. It shouldn't be thought of as a negative for others but simply a positive for the RS members. Is it unfair that some people get fast lane at airport security and private lounges at airports? No they are frequent customers rewarded for their business.

Also not trying to rustle feathers here but if you can't afford 300$ a year for a RS maybe you shouldn't be buying 10-15$ bottles of beer.... Or on the flip side choose not to buy that bottle once a month and voila, there's half the membership cost!

Ok back to work so I can join this RS when it is available!

If RS becomes available I'll buy it... If not I'll continue to buy their amazing beer... Seems pretty simple  either way its win-win for JK and myself.

It's totally different! I can still get the same Prairie beers as everyone else. Redirect this to glasswareadvocate.com and people will be in an uproar though. Lol

    Make a jerkyadvocate.com and I'm sure it'll be a hit.

    ISO: alligator and deer jerky
    FT: my locals

I'm looking at this the same way as a Kickstarter project. I support the brewery with a big chunk of money up front and in return I'm rewarded with experimental and other small batches of beer. It's not an exclusivity thing. It's just an opportunity to access something that wouldn't normally be bottled and distributed, or something early before a big enough batch is bottled and distributed, much like a prototype.

Petrol Station's Reuben is pretty amazing.

Also, was there a label released for the Raspberry Das! yet?

No. That's nothing more than a publicity stunt that obviously goes against Kickstarter guidelines. Also, I'm not suggesting Jester King literally do a Kickstarter project because there isn't a defined project with an end and alcohol cannot be used as a reward. I was simply making an analogy to how my ideal membership program would work.

I get what your saying and I was joking about the kickstarter thing like Scott. It's just my opinion that making beer an exclusive commodity moves us away from advocacy and sharing and more towards snobbery and "whalz bro."
