I think BMC needs to realize that we're not drinking higher alcohol beer to get tanked. Higher alcohol beers are gaining in popularity because the styles of beer which typically have higher alcohol contents are simply better tasting beers with more enjoyable flavors. Getting drunk is simply a bye-product of drinking an enjoyable beer (at least for me). If I wanted my beer to taste like grain alcohol, I would just drink something out of my medicine cabinet.

There are a large subset of people who do just that. I see it at craft bars all the time. This group includes people who also enjoy the taste and people who drink it despite the taste. This will work on some level and they know it.

After reading your thread title, I thought, "Absolutely, as long as the end product tastes fantastic, celebrates an artisinal touch and..." then I opened the thread and saw the article.

    (sigh).

If you're including all beer drinkers in that statement, I think you're mistaken.

I totally disagree with this. The flavours of high-alcohol beers may be more intense, but that doesn't make them intrinsically better tasting. That you prefer those flavours is purely a matter of personal taste.

I quite like the restraint of beers like Augustiner Helles or Harvey's Mild. You couldn't get their flavours with a shitload of alcohol.

Using cooking as an analogy, buy your logic the only worthwhile food would be loaded with spices and incredibly intensely flavoured.

Miller Fortune will be my new craft beer of choice! It's so fancy! I just wish it had a red bottle instead of a black one so more people could see me enjoying that fine beer!

The fact that this is 6.9% ABV is hilarious and awesome I can't wait to get wasted!

A few weeks ago when I was at my local TW I overheard a guy asking the employee there what beer he would recommend that would get him drunk the quickest. When asked what kind of stuff he liked to drink the guy just stated "whatever beer just gets me drunk fast man". So clearly there is some market for no taste high ABV beers out there.

Everyone I know that drinks Bud Light Platinum seems to make it a point to let me know that it has a higher alcohol content than regular Bud Light and that they can now drink fewer BLPs and get just as drunk.

In a taste test between BL and BLP, I don't think anyone really cares.

I completely agree, Rekrule. I work in a craft beer centric bar and can explicitly recall someone just yesterday who purchased and drank an Avery Uncle Jacob's Stout because it "did the job." Mind you, this person hates stouts but bought and consumed it for the effects of the alcohol.

I think there's a group of people (a younger version of myself included) that said "Well if I'm paying a premium for this, it had better get me drunk." So this allows BMC to keep the masses buying BMC.

Meanwhile, we'll actually enjoy our 4% lambics and 6% saisons.

agreed. If i ever plan on just drinking to get drunk and want to toss something into the mix, its always the first thing I drink that night so I can enjoy it and savor the flavor ie. the other night, we drank a chocolate rain and then proceded to drink lil sumpin sumpin the rest of the night. I would never finish off the night with a chocolate rain or even drink it while im already somewhat tipsy just for the sake of using that 19% beer to get me wasted

Took the words out of my mouth, only the analogy I was going to use would be that if there's more flavor in higher alcohol drinks then vodka must be more flavorful than KBS.

Maybe, but "we" aren't a representative sample of BMC's primary demographic. Many (probably most) BMC drinkers are drinking beer for its intoxicating effects.

BMC directs its marketing at the lowest common denominator, as most advertising does, especially for products that already have a strong l.c.d. foothold in the market. Therefore, when a BMC drinker sees a higher ABV, they may see it as a better product. Plus, the article says MillerCoors is targeting not only Platinum drinkers, but those who have moved to spirits as well. This is proof that BMC is trying to cast a larger net not only with new craft "breweries" but with their core product line as well. Looks like they're getting more and more desperate.

I have a buddy that likes to go to craft beer bars with me. He really likes the taste of craft beers over BMC, but he actually does some sort of price-to-ABV ratio calculation in his head to determine which beer he is going to order so he can get the best buzz for the least amount of money. He wishes for the day the bars start putting that calculation on the beer list to make it easier for him to order.
