He obviously doesn't want y'all looking at his pics. He wants his privacy, which I can understand.

It's a quick video of the line to get into the Bockbieranstich wrapping all the way around the block. Doubt he would have a problem with people watching it. Although Germans can be weird about Datenschutz....

It's on the official Mahr's FB page now for those interested.

I still can't find a video of the line to get in, but there are these videos of the crowd at the Bockbieranstich:

    Success! Thanks.

On a side note, people really need to learn to hold their phones in landscape mode (horizontally) when shooting videos (and pictures). :grimacing:

Okay, it's the end of day 2, or day 1, depending on how you count the loss of 7 hours, and almost no sleep. We made it to Miltenberg and decided on Zum Reisen for lunch. I had brewed a Schwarzviertler earlier in the year so I had to make that my first official beer. It was a lot smokier than mine and thinner. I attribute the smokiness to the age of the raunch aka compared to what I can get. I'll have to bump mine up. My wife had the Pils and thought it was the best she has had. Without question, Faust has to be considered a world class brewery. During the course of the day, we ended up trying 7 different Faust beers and all were good.

I"m writing from my wife's iPad and haven't figured out yet how to paste links.

    Gute Nacht,

Now that you're in-country, welcome. I'm glad someone else finally is getting around to my point of view that Brauerei Faust makes some great beers. Try the Kräusen, it's also top notch. How was the food at zum Reisen? Miltenberg is also a beautiful town, isn't it? I hope you post pics, but take your time and enjoy yourself and the beer, first.

Welcome and have fun. I don't remember the Schwarzvietler being smoky, that's odd. I do remember it being pretty darn delicious, though. Glad you're off to a good start!

My wife had the Kräusen. I tasted it and thought t was good. I may have to order my own glass today. The food at zum Reisen was good. We had some kind of meatballs with potatoes and leeks. Very nice place. If I can't figure out how to post pics on the iPad, I will when I get home.

Well, according to the recipe in Brew Your Own, IIRC it has about 5% Rauchmalz. I'm learning the the age of the malt impacts the smokiness. I'm sure that Faust is using much fresher malt than I can get so I will have to increase the amount I use to get the same results. I have two bottles so Schwarzviertler to bring home to compare my next batch to.

BTW, I know that Horst Dornbush is regarded here with some disdain, but I probably would not have come here except for his article.

I just checked the weather report for this week. We're having and will have all week virtually summer weather all this week, between 17 and 20 C every day, with next week cooler at around 14 C, and no rain in sight. For fall in Germany, this is quite unusual and you should be thanking your lucky stars.

Don't worry about posting pics til after your trip. Just enjoy and since you're finding time to post, keep us informed. When I tried the Schwartzviertler this year in January, I mentioned a "hint of smoke," but that was from a bottle, and if you had it @ zum Riesen, it was probably from a keg that was filled very very recently, and maybe the batch you had was also smokier, or… they upped the Rauchmalz percentage in the recipe. Were you able to try to the Auswanderer, which is basically an DIPA? I loved that beer since it reminded me of being exactly like a 3 Floyds Alpha King. Happy drinking.

This sounds like what you ordered:
Original "Miltenberger Rossäpfel" – Leberknödel mit einer
Dunkelbiersoße, Speck (15), Sauerkraut und Kartoffelbrei
Liver Dumplings with Bacon Sauce, Sauerkraut and Mashed Potatoes
    Bierempfehlung: Hefeweizen Dunkel oder Doppelbock

    Or this:
Hausgemachte Semmelknödel mit frischen Champignons in Rahm
Homemade Dumplings in Mushrooms Cream Sauce
Bierempfehlung: Riesen Spezial oder Hefeweizen Hell

I love that they empfehelen (recommend) beers to accompany each dish on their online menu. Did they do it on their physical menus, too? They didn't do this when I visited 3 years ago.

I hadn't ever seen the Riesen Spezial beer ever before. Were you able to try it and if so, how was it?

finally… did yo stay at the inn at zum Riesen?

Glad you decided to go somewhere a little off the tourist-beaten path, and even more glad you seem to be enjoying it!

After being in the quaint medieval town of Miltenberg, Bamberg, though beautiful, will seem like a tourist death trap.

I've never gotten that impression from Bamberg, although I live in Heidelberg so my exposure to tourists is pretty high. I was only in Miltenberg for a brief time although it was a cute little town. Maybe I'll head back there one of these days.

Sie hatten recht. Ich sollte mehr als einen Tag in der schönen Stadt von Regensburg geplant haben. Ich werde diesen Fehler das nächtse Mal nicht machen, wenn ich besuche.

Either you were sandbagging us on your German knowledge or you have been a very fast learner!

    Or Google Translate.
