New Glarus Black Top is the best of the style I've had out of 10 or so. 6.99 a six pack as well? Where do I sign up?

I love dark beers and I love hoppy beers. When done correctly this is the perfect combination. One of my favorite styles. It's like being into The Cure and liking their darker stuff from "Pornography". For some it will be way too intense and unyielding, but for others it will be revered. Others will prefer the lighter pop like "High", perhaps a Sierra Nevada IPA.

I certainly steer away from them. Just not my thing. Some of them are great but I have just had a few too many that weren't for me. As with most styles, I'm sure I'll change my mind one day but not today. I guess I am generalizing but....

I love the style, but they can be hit or miss like all styles. Lots of good ones out there.. Arcadia B-Craft is one of the most slept on, it's amazing fresh. I would love to see The Brew Kettle bottle their Black Rajah, it's great..

I'm not a huge fan of the style, but that doesn't mean there aren't great examples and beers I wouldn't come back to. SSR is a good example as stated above.

I enjoy them, they provide a nice combo of malt and hops, for my money Hoppy Bunny Ale by Duck Rabbit is one of my favortes. Its a beer I buy regularly.

One of my least favorite styles, but Uinta Dubhe and Southern Tier IBA are the ones I've liked best.

I've been curious about black rajah. Might hit strongsville next week and try it.

I've only had one. It was massively hopped with only a vague trace of dark malts buried underneath. I rather wondered what was the point.

If you want a combination of hops and dark malts, something like Sierra Nevada Stout is more effective, in my opinion.

This thread makes me sad, for I love the black IPA's. Stone SSR is my favorite...:slight_frown:

No, I do not dislike them. In fact I quite like them and wish that more breweries would brew a hoppy dark ale.

Founders Inspired Artist (not in production anymore sadly), and especially Greenbush's Anger are two examples of world class black IPA's from Michigan. The ladded is availble year round at a roughly $9.99 a sixer, a must try from the upcoming superstars at Greenbush

Not into them for the same reason I dislike hoppy stouts. The two flavor profiles don't mesh most of the time. That said, I do like Wookey Jack. And DevESTATEtion wasn't bad.

Seconded for Black Rajah. I'm not a fan of the style but I always jump at the chance to have this when I can. It's balanced in the right way.

With the OP, way too many things I really like to go this way again.

The only two I've had that are worth getting again (to me, anyway) are Wookey Jack and Inspired Artist (Founders). Outside of those, I find they mostly taste like dirt.

Black Ale sounds less ridiculous than Black IPA. Anyway, there are some I really enjoy. Locally, if Carton's Epitome counts, it's delicious. It seems like you need to like a roastiness mixed with hoppiness or you probably won't like black IPAs. The best one I've had was Stone's 15th Anniversary Escondidian.

Like most things the best one are great like Wookie jack and Sublimely, the rest I pass on. I've had a few that were undrinkable, and it's most definitely not a style I seek out.
