Very true. I grew up in western NY and started drinking beer in the late 60's. Regular Genny was no better or worse than Bud, Schlitz, Pabst, etc. but was cheaper, so we drank a lot of it. Plus, it was our local beer. The Cream Ale wasn't very impressive. Their 12 Horse Ale was several cuts above most of the competition at the time and was pretty decent. Drank it into the 80's and had a couple pints last year and enjoyed it. Not craft, but better than BMC.

Much of the current "nostalgia" seems to come from younger types remembering what their father or grandad drank and people from out of it's home area that think it was way better than it really was.

If you spend time in western NY, you need to know it's nickname is Genny, not "Gene".

    Bingo.

My experience with Genny was similar to yours but in the 80s--cheap on the likes of Carling's, Red White and Blue, and Meister Brau and served a purpose. Had a cream ale a year or two ago and well, there is just way too much good stuff out there to drink it.

That is an interesting article, I knew they made Dundee but I did not know they made Magic Hat, Pyramid, or Seagram's. Rochester is a few hours from me so this falls into my "buy regional" goal.

My experience with Genny Light is not favorable, I've had it a few times in recent years and it gave me a massive headache both times, and I only had a few.

I'm willing to try some of the others, though. I know I've had Cream Ale but it was many years ago... probably before I was of legal age to drink it.

I love the hop bombs but I'm spending way too much money on beer and I'm starting to look for less expensive alternatives for everyday quaffing and save the hop bombs for a few on the weekends.

Genesee is now on my try list. I had a few PBR's not too long ago and they weren't bad and the price is right.

On the subject of Dundee, I remember when JW Dundee's Honey Brown Lager was among my early craft beers. I didn't drink for a few years (partly because I was on the slippery slope to becoming a bona fide alcoholic and partly because I had no money)... but when I did start drinking again (in moderation) Dundee was one of my favorites for a few years. They do make pretty decent stuff and the price point was/is a little better than a lot of craft brewers. I may give them another try.

    which is owned by http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cerveceria_Costa_Rica

which also owns magic hat (who sued West 6th over their "6" resembling magic hats "9") and a number of other breweries, and companies, and so on and so forth..

but everyone loves hopping on the "goose island is bull ever since they signed with abinbev"

The Magic Hat beers have been heavily criticized and ridiculed on this website long before the formation of NAB, their later purchase of the "IBU" breweries and brands (which resulted in Magic Hat losing the "craft" designation from the B.A.), and eventually Florida Ice and Farm's purchase of NAB. Ditto, to a lesser extent, for the Pyramid beers.

Genesee's "crafty" (< according to the B.A.) Dundee line also does not get much respect here.

Well, "signed with" is a bit euphemistic - Goose Island is wholly-owned by Anheuser-Busch - but, in general, it's probably safe to say the GI beers are better received on this website than any of the NAB brands. There is a small minority that dislikes the fact that Goose Island is now owned by the the largest multinational brewing company in the world, but there's not a lot of "bull" about the quality of their beers, even those now brewed at AB breweries.

That is a good article but there is so much to the history that it probably would take a book to cover it.

Having grown up in Rochester it was actually painful for me to watch the near demise of the Genesee Brewing Company, even though I was doing it from afar during my time in the service. I actually wrote a tribute around 2000 when I figured that the brewery was finished. I'd be curious what anyone here thinks of it. It needs some slight updating in light of some recent events.

Genny Cream is my beer guilty pleasure, I love it, and not only to bring back fond memories of when it was the cheap go to for my friends and I. Glad to hear they are gonna be all right.

If this stuff was brewed on Long Island it probably be one of the top 30 cream ales brewed by us flatlanders  !

I always have Genny Cream and a Dundee seasonal mix packs in the fridge. They are great cheap beers to have around. I'm not going to be drinking the expensive high octane stuff all night so I switch off to something still tasty but very inexpensive.

No "hate" here for Genesee. It is what it is. An inexpensive AAL from a regional brewery. Same as Yuengling/Narragansett. And as with those two, retro adverts/marketing have been pretty effective.

I drank a ton of Genny cream in the 70's but haven't had it since. Maybe time to revisit the past.

Used to get Genny when I was poor and in college. 8 bucks for an 18 in 2004-2005. Would get all the "variants"....Regular, Ice, Cream, Light, etc. Honestly Genny Light was gross, and I was drinking Busch Light and Keystone at the time. Cream was pretty decent, if I remember correctly. Haven't had it in a long time, but brings back college memories. I think my friends and I came up with a song about being poor and buying Genny, called "Hey Genesee", set to the tune of Hey Jealousy by the Gin Blossoms.

I still really like a lot of the Dundee beers. I would love to try the Genny Bock, but can't seem to find it in these parts.

I am drinking a Genny Bock as i type this. If any of you ever come to Rochester, you need to try the Genesee brew house. It is amazing!

I did not know that. When does Genny Bock become a year round beer?

    Cheers!
