Saisons that compare to Dupont

The style has pretty extreme variance, so if you want to explore Saisons you're probably best served by grabbing everything you can (afford to) get your hands on. Within range of the "blueprint" of Dupont are offerings from Upright, Blaugies, Jandrain, Au Baron, de Ranke. If you wanted to step off that path you might try Bruery Saison de Lente, Victory Helios, Prairie, (or long jump off that path)...Fantome, Crooked Stave, Stillwater, Jolly Pumpkin, St Somewhere. If you just want beers that taste like Dupont, seems you're stuck drinking Dupont.

 

Unless they changed the names of their beers, I believe that you are a little confused. La Folie is their Oud Bruin. It would seem impossible for any palate to find those beers similar.

I'm a huge fan of Foret myself, but best locally available is Hennepin. Le Merle is good, but pretty clean in my opinion. It's difficult to find an easily accessible true to style Saison IMO. It's also become a catchall for many purveyors of "farmhouse beers" so there is a great deal of variability. That said, if you can get Dupont and enjoy it, drink the hell out of it. It is hard to beat at the price point.

 

Not sure if it's possible to find in the US, but to me the most similar saison to Dupont is Saison d'Epeautre, from Brasserie de Blaugies. Don't get me wrong, it doesn't taste the same, but you get some of the same characteristics in it : the farmhouse funkyness, the lemony taste... For me these two are the best examples of the style made in Belgium (I really like Fantôme but to me it's a totally different kind of beer).

 

I like a lot of things they make. The Saison is my favorite, but the Bons Voeux is a great beer too. Moinette blonde is good, Cerevisiae is quite nice and Biolégère is not bad at all for a 3.5% beer.

 

I have been homebrewing the Saison Dupont recipe from Clone Brews. I started because I don't have good temperature control and I read that saison yeast works better at the temperatures my house has been getting up to. It has done excellent here in the Illinois summer heat and everyone that has tried it has fallen in love to the point that I worry about having enough for myself some batches. Obviously it is a little different with our water source and other variables, but it is delicious and I highly recommend that people attempt some saison brewing in the summer.

 

Foret is still an amazing drop. Not terribly hard to find, either.

 

Never heard of the Foret, so looked it up and it seems it's the american name of the 'Moinette Biologique' (Organic Moinette). Not my favourite of the bunch but not bad either.

some of my favorite American saisons are Arthur, hennepin and tank 7. treehouse just had a special saison release called Lucid; haven't had it.

 

The reason why Dupont is so amazing is because it isn't sweet at all. I have been looking for sometihng that comes close and nothing. i do have one that's a Hill Farmstead collaboration and it's supposed to be pretty close to the original style.

 

OT Nit: it's Dupont, not DuPont. The former makes social lubricants and the latter makes mechanical lubricants (among other things).

Back on-topic, while I haven't found anything that can actually stand in for Dupont, I'll second Funkwerks Saison and Crooked Stave's saisons.

 

Love to try it, but I not been back to that state, since they were brewing "craft" or micro's, last time I was in St Louis was in 1982. sadly.

It's got that clean, crispness like DuPont. Perfect balance of sweet and tart and only a hint of funk.

Stone Saison was very good, but different.
