Friends will ask me about my favorite breweries, two of which are Russian River and The Bruery. To the former they will often state 'oh I just had their insertbeerhere at someplace last week', to which I have to correct them with 'Russian River, not Rush River'; confuses people constantly. To the latter, people will, every time, respond with 'yeah but which brewery' or 'the brewery here in town?'. Beer problems, man.

When I first ordered a Yuengling in Harrisburg, the waitress looked at me and said, "You mean a lager?" I was quite confused until I learned that in Central PA, you order a Yuengling simply by asking for a lager.

My buddy calls them "Ding-a-lings." I always remind him of that when he has one stuck to his lips.

    Okay. Misinterpretations:

Has anyone ever gotten slapped (or received a frosty look) for asking for A Little Sumpin' Sumpin', A Little Sumpin' Wild, or A Little Simpin' Extra?

    Just sayin'...

Heady Topper variants such as Heady Hopper, Teddy Topper, Teddy Hopper, and the best was "Toady Top" which was asked for one Saturday morning, late ski season. I asked the poor woman "Excuse me?" My co-worker was coming from the backroom and I asked her again to repeat it so he could hear. We all laughed! Oh, she got her 4-pack.

Actually, Patrick Rue explained to me that he planned to name the beer Fleur but Goose Island already used the name. Instead, he decided to name the beer Fruit but labeling laws dictate that fruit must be present in the beer to have "fruit" in the name. So he came up with "Fruet", an obvious play on his name - "F-RUE-T". The beer is pronounced Fruit, end of story.

I hate when I hear people ask for a belgian (insert style here) and say Belgium instead.

example: "May I have a Belgium Pale Ale?"
"May I have an America IPA?"

Oh, it's the same in western and eastern PA too -- I went to visit some PA friends a few years ago and they just shake their heads at this practice -- even the one who lives in Harrisburg.

I have to wonder what the Ying-a-ling drinkers do if they travel. You want a lager? Okay, which one?

The waitress at a crowded restaurant in Martha's Vineyard said they had a Whale Tail special that night, so I asked, "Whale's Tale?" She repeated, "Whale Tail," so I ordered one. The waitress came back with a glass of red wine...I looked up at her and again repeated, "Whale's Tale?" She looked at me puzzled and said, "that's what you ordered." I laughed and said to her, "I thought you said Whale's Tale," and explained that Whale's Tale is a beer brewed on Nantucket. That didn't seem to register because the restaurant didn't carry Whale's Tale, they carried Whale Tail wine. SO I down my nice glass of Whale Tail red and ordered a Bud. Good laugh for everyone, didn't have any clue there was a wine with that name.
