I have personally blacklisted a few "BAs" for this. If I try to trade something that cost $30-50 then dont offer me less than what I paid!

Agreed. For example, people who won't stop trying to trade the same beer OVER and OVER and OVER. Let it go!

Done. Except that I've seen your posts everywhere. There's the exception to every rule.

But I recently sent a message in answer to an ISO:FT & didn't get a response back for a week. I'd hope that if you're busy with your grad studies you wouldn't be actively soliciting trades & then taking a dog's day to respond. Nothankyouberrymuch.

I am a great trader and will bend over backwards to make sure everyone gets what I promise... I am a man of my word and if I have to go out of my way to make anyone on this site happy, I will!

So if anyone has a problem with me being a gentleman and a scholar BM me!

I have one completed trade (as a member of this site and many before it was online and before you were legally allowed to drink) where I drove over an hour each way to meet a guy in SCHAUMBURG, IL. I don't even live NEAR THERE! But it was an excuse to go to the track at Arlington Park, so all is good, won 33.80 on the exacta in the 4th race! SCORE!

How about a personal red flag:

If you are so eager to start a new trade that you are falling over yourself to ship first to get the deal done with a non-vetted trader, you shouldn't be trading.

I personally think that this is half the issue here - so many new traders are having shit sent to them first for some ungodly reason. If you are unwilling to demand that some random new user send first you deserve the raw deal you're about to get in my book.

To this day, in my limited number of deals, I have never once sent a box first. I only had to ask for this once, but I wouldn't hesitate to demand it with someone I wasn't entirely sure of. I can't believe how readily people have sent me money first (for proxy) without even asking for references or anything even. Please BA's, save yourself the eventual burn and think before sending, some common sense and a healthy dose of mistrust will serve you well.

I hire private investigators to work up a dossier on any potential trade partner, so I never run into any issues.

This can't possibly be true. You would have NEVER traded with backfat.

There's a lot of good advice in this thread, and a bit of silliness too. :grinning:

Poor communication sucks. It's a sure sign of a no-trade situation. I had one guy who had "life problems" and shipped pretty late, but he kept me posted and sent me more than enough to make up for it. Communication was good, trade was good.

I do trade phone numbers (and often emails too). The phone number comes in handy for more than just filling in the spot on the fedex form... I've called traders in certain situations where having their phone number was key to setting up a new trade, getting them something I know or think they wanted, or in negotiating for an upcoming trade (whilst inside the wine and cheese place in St Louis, for instance).

I have enough trades now where a complete newbie will have to ship to me first. There's no absolute cutoff for number of trades to be considered a "newb." However, posting history, references, dealings with people that I've dealt with before, and communication are all factors you must consider.

However, being that this is teh interwebz... caution is always in order.

I'm sure you're a fine trader, but you've basically just been blackballed by 90% of the trading community based on your posts in that thread.

People around here tend to have little tolerance for bringing Ebay values into trade discussions, because the Ebay market is way off. Ironically, you talk about economics and information flowing, yet the Ebay universe exists purely in a vacuum of naivety. It is the very opposite of what you propose you are in favor of that allows some of these bottles to be sold for $100 when they can be had for a fraction of that from people who trade. If people were better informed, the Ebay market would be much smaller than it is.

Communication is key in any deal. Clear trade agreements always make it easier. When looking for a potential trader I always look at the post history, while not a set criteria it is nice to see someone who is involved in discussions and active on other parts of the site. Makes it seem like they are more a part of the community than just someone looking for a variety of beer.

was potentially working on a trade with someone who only joined a few months ago, has 100% of his posts in the ISO/FT forum, no refs or past trades listed, no wants/gots listed or even linked to, had to check with friends/stores to see if what I wanted was available (as opposed to actually having the bottles in possession), etc... just gave off massive bad vibes that I didn't even want to work with.
