I always pass this beer up because of its low points and ugly reviews....

My friend got the box. I can post a picture of it, but I dont want to ruin the surprise. The guy Moe who works there takes care of the boxes I believe, and he has always helped me out with great beer!

Who would it ruin the surprise to?

There is really no reason for them to do this unless the value of the beer they are sending you is substantially less than the $200.00. It seems like a good chance for them to get rid of some poor sellers or out of date beers or both. If you shell out two hundred bucks without knowing what is in it there is a good chance the surprise won't be a pleasant one.

Not necessarily, as most beers are marked up anyways, so they would still be making their profit I imagine whether they put the box together like this or sell bottles individually in the stores. However, here they have more of a chance to make a profit by sending low/can't sell(ers) along with one WOW beer that people might think make this all worth it..

Same. Never buying from them after those reviews. But it does make an awkward scenario: if the box is bad, people are going to flip out again against Moe, and if it is good, people will accuse Moe of just sending out a good box to get good reviews after getting smashed on that other thread.

Either way, I do not have $200 lying around, and I have heard terrible reviews of their other boxes so I don't even think one good box would redeem that.

Ruin the surprise of getting a bunch of great beer of course! That Guy Moe really knows how to make you feel special with a box of $200 Mystery Beers like:

    Oh. Hmmm well...

Completely agree with this, and think it a good idea to amplify a bit.

If you're a potential cusomter, why would you expect this to be a good deal for you? Most retailers I know are in business to make money, and most wouldn't stay in business very long if they were charging $200 for a box of mystery beer that actually retails for $300. On the other hand, from a retail standpoint, this ploy is a great idea, and just for the reason lester619 states.

In my experience, here are things to avoid:

Mystery boxes of beer and/or wine. Most retail outlets I'm familiar with use this as a way to get rid of slow moving product. That doesn't mean the beer or wine you get will necessarily be bad, or even that it will be overpriced, but usually if a beer or wine isn't selling all that well, there's a reason for it.

A restaurant featuring a set selection of beer or wine to accompany every course. Unfortunately, many restaurants use this as a method for unloading slow moving product. Once again, that doesn't mean the wine or beer with the course will be bad, it just means that for whatever reason, customers haven't been inclined to order it off the beer or wine menu. You can draw your own inferences or conclusions for why that might be.

Again, I hate to point out the obvious, but if a potential deal sounds like it may be too good to be true, most of the time it probably is (too good to be true). Cheers!

There are three occasions when you will get a deal on beer:
#1. Buy in bulk. If you're buying a full case, you're most likely going to save around 10% (especially if you're buying bombers.) If your shop doesn't list case priced, just ask them if they have a full case discount.
#2. Marked down beer. (Warning- this beer has often been sitting at the distributor, or worse, returned to the distributor due to slow sales or an impending expiration date. It often seems like an awesome deal, but many times this beer just hans't been taken care of. I usually only check out drastically reduced beers if they are in cans.)
#3. Mis-marked beer. A shop doesn't know what they've got or has their sku's wrong. With the ever increasing # of craft beers out there, this has become more common at some less attentive/less organized shops.

There is a potential #4, buying at the brewery. This sometimes holds true at small breweries that are just starting to distribute. But more and more frequently you actually pay less at large shops (or Costco) than you will pay at the brewery.

    The mystery box fits #'s 1 & 2.
#1. You're certainly pony'ing up more cash, so I could see a shop being willing to say, "Well, let's give him 10% off." My guess is that they're "retail" total on these beers is somewhere between $215-225. Of course, if they are marking them up 5% above other retailers, you aren't really saving much.
#2. A shop I frequent often purchases pallets of beer that has been returned to the distributor by other shops or that has been sitting in the distribution warehouse for months. In some cases, you can tell- the bottles look dusty and dirty, the cases are ripped or faded, etc. Distributors have beer that they need to dump. My guess is that some of CBK's mystery box beers are beers they got at a discount from distributors. Even 2-3 of these beers would make up the profit margin loss if they're selling the box at a 15%-ish discount.

They're going to throw in a "rare" beer- that's the bait.

Personally, even with BA beers and sours, if I can't find some sort of date on the bottle, I don't buy it.

Oh- and one more thing. Trust your instincts. Our ancestors sharpened them being chased by carnivorous predators. Let's put them to good use buying beer.
