New Glarus is certifiably ranked among the top German-style lager brewers in the U.S., but it is only widely available in one State -- and it ain't a Northeast state, Brother.

I would recommend finding a better paying job. You can't have your cake and eat it too.

Also those beers that you like are horrible. They don't even come close to craft beer.

If there's a craft beer comparable to Hofbrau Original, I haven't found it yet at any price.

Not sure where in the Northeast, but Devil's Backbone Vienna Lager is a wonderful brew. Stoudts Pils and Gold are also solid with reasonable distribution. The Great Lakes beers are also good with reasonable distribution.

They just crossed the Mason-Dixon into DE. I'm about to get my "Back Bone" on next Saturday. Hopefully their lagers are as good as they say!
    Cheers!

From what I can gather by his -fairly informative- post, he's looking for a domestically-brewed equivalent on the grounds that it will be fresher and cheaper, not having to accrue the additional expense of crossing an ocean and spending time bumping docks at transhipment points en-route to the wholesaler and finally the retailer.

That premise is theoretically a sensible one, but frankly American breweries can't quite achieve what he wants for the price that he wants to pay; I estimate his ideal $/six-pack "sweet spot" at $3.99 and $5.49 fresh -- which is to say not past-code.

Here's an idea: cases of Sierra Nevada Summerfest on closeout at Costco -- probably $12.99 about right now.

My final votes are Burger, GL Dortmunder Gold, Hudy 14K, or yes...SummerFest! Cheers @Chaz ! Cheers and welcome to BA FNG!

I'll echo Troegs: Sunshine Pils; a gold medal winner at GABF for German Pilsner. It's in season May-August so it pays to stock up into the fall.

I can buy 3 Weihenstephaner Original Premium pint .9's for around the price of a Sam Adams sixer. And it's available at Market Basket. Just one of the reasons I let my wife con me into grocery shopping.

I agree. It just seems impossible for him to hit his price/ quality point with american beers. In a perfect world, that is the way it would work, but somehow it is cheaper to get beer brewed on the other side of the world and shipped here. Maybe just searching for the most rotated/fresh stock of imports would suit him better. If wiling to pay a bit more, Dortmunder Gold would be my vote.

Thanks for everyone for their recommendations! I have compiled a shopping list and will try the recommendation. I haven't tried any of these beers yet and maybe I will like them more than the German beers that I have been drinking. (even if they cost a buck or two more.)
So why am I looking for the American alternatives? Chaz's response was spot on. It would be nice to have an American alternative to a German lager/pilsners that are both fresher and cheaper.
The imported beers already went through a cross Atlantic voyage and probably lost some of their taste by the time they reached the local store. I like to browse the beer selection in the store, trying out new beers and comparing their tastes. But when I thought about it, just did not make sense to me that a brewery in Germany could make a good lager or pilsner from quality ingredients, ship it across the globe and sell it for $7-8, and no domestic brewery was capable of producing a quality lager in that price range. I would like to support American breweries whether it is a smaller independent brewer or a large company as long as its products are good and they are reasonably priced. The microbrews are making quality beers, but they seem to be focusing on different styles and not so much on the pilsners that I like the most.
