Who brews it anyway?

That's just the Extra Stout, though. The rest still come from St. James Gate

I know in New Mexico Sierra Blanca Brewery contract brews for quite a few.

Guns and Oil Brewing Company out of Austin, TX has their only bottled beer Maverick Lager brewed and bottled in Moriarty, NM at Sierra Blanca.

A local restaurant Stumbling Steer in Albuquerque has had their in restaurant beer contract brewed until their own brew system is in place.

Sierra Blanca themselves brews names under the titles of Rio Grande, Alien, Istopes, and Sierra Blanca. I believe they contract brew/bottle for De La Vega, a Las Cruces based brewery for their Pecan beer.

Maybe other places are like this. But they seem to have a grab bag of beers and brands with no true "moniker"/or logo.

Yeah. Foreign Extra Stout (yellow label) comes in 4-packs, but not easy to find. It's brewed and bottled in Ireland.

That's a fantastic beer! I came upon a stash over the weekend, too. I just might go and get it while I can if it's getting hard to find.

It is, or was rather. The Extra Stout was brewed in Ireland, while the Draught cans and bottles with the widget came from Canada. This was almost 10 years ago though, so obviously things may have changed.

Edit: Apparently the reverse is now true.

It is everywhere around here. Not only 4 packs, but full cases are available.

Pretty sure it comes from Memphis,TN now.

I just drank the last can from a case of 21st Amendment IPA, which reads "brewed and bottled by 21st Amendment Brewery, San Francisco, CA." Yet it's actually brewed/canned in Minnesota by Cold Spring Brewing. I enjoy the beer and will continue to support the brewery but feel this is somewhat misleading. Sixpoint does the same thing.

You're right. I just used that article to illustrate how common the practice is...

G Heileman used to brew a lot of stuff. So did Carling. I stopped caring when Strohs made Schiltz. Who gives a fukk anymore?

I can't find anything about them brewing in TN now.

EDIT: Okay, I found something about SEISon being brewed in Memphis but it seems like they still brew in PA too.

There was a previous thread somewhere that mentioned they were brewed in TN. I only remember because someone was complaining that it was brewed 70 miles from them but not distributed within the state.

Right, I think they said some of the stuff was brewed there.

Sixpoint has never had a canning line in their Brooklyn brewery. They brewed their canned beers (and some draught) at The Lion in Wilkes-Barre, PA previously under an alternating proprietorship arrangement, switching to the City Brewing Co. Memphis facility, as noted by Sixpoint himself.

To find a mention of the Memphis-City brewery, one must check the TTB COLA for Sixpoint canned beers, which note:

As for the cans' labeling - which read ""Brewed and Canned by Sixpoint Brewery, Brooklyn, NY" not "at" or "in" - see this previous post on the topic.

Alternating Proprietorships are considered contract-brewing arrangements in casual industry usage (below), since the difference is a legal one based on ownership of the raw materials and finished beer, which company makes the excise tax payments, etc- not on "who" brews the beer or owns the brewery.

The US has been getting Guinness Extra Stout brewed under license in Canada since the 1970s, although in some markets, and for some packages (particularly the 22 oz. bottles), GES continued to come from Ireland up until (IIRC) the late 1990s-early 2000s. (Going even further back, GES was brewed in the US from the late 1940s to 1954).

Initially, the Canadian Guinness in the US was brewed by Labatt, which had been brewing Guinness for their domestic market since 1965. Later, Moosehead was also licensed to brew Guinness Extra Stout for the US market - look for either "Toronto (Labatt)" or "New Brunswick (Moosehead)" on the label.

Guinness Draught - kegs, and nitro cans/bottles (which only arrived in the US in the 1990s) - has always come from Ireland for the US market.

Learned something new. It doesn't seem to matter that 21st brews their own beer with their own brewers at the Cold Springs brewery.
