The Ba score at the store is double-edged. Unless your std dev is always low, you may be missing out on something you may have really enjoyed but passed on because of its sub 4 rating.

Ran my numbers, and I was pretty close with my original guess of 3.95 as my average rating.
    No. of ratings: 1,135
    Avg. rating: 3.98

True, indeed, but with that same sub rating as a criterion one is also missing out on a many, many more beers that wouldn't have been enjoyed. So on the whole it's a net win for the drinker and a net loss for the drain or the slugs in the garden.

Interesting study. Wow. Very cool. If you are going to take in the calories, it better be something fantastic. I only drink beers I consider A+. I have stuff muled in. I wait for that special beer to get released. No way and I drinking something that is mediocre. I have drank nothing at times if nothing A+ was available. It is why we are beer geeks. I always BYOB. Always. Open my cooler? 3 Floyds, Enjoy By, Sucks, Heady, something special. My cooler is famous.

Generally, I do. Mostly thanks to knowledge shared through BA, my 'tick list' only includes new-to-me beers that should be 'good' or better.

Those I keep stocked in the beer fridge are typically in the north-of-4 rating.

I don't limit myself though, and will never turn down the opportunity to try something new or an unknown, so variation sneaks in from time to time.

Last Saturday, I started with Blot out the Sun, moved on to Vanilla Rye, and then fell asleep after opening a BA Sexual Chocolate. I drink only on Saturday so I make it count

Your topic intrigued me, so I took a look at what's in, or headed in, the fridge (with their BA ratings)...

    Wulver 98
    Brew Free or Die 87
    Back in Black 84
    Black Tuesday 100
    Siberian Night 93
    Odell IPA 96
    Myrcenary 96
    Expedition 95
    Scotty Karate 91
    Blackout Stout 94
    Abyss 100
    BA Narwhal 97
    Narwhal 93
    Burton Baton 95
    Tres Blueberry 89
    Ten Fidy 98
    Hop Ranch 95
    Backwoods Bastard 97

So that's just over a 94 average. But the Abyss and Black Tuesday will be gone next week (sharing with family), which will bring the average down. And like many here, I like to try new things (hence the Brew Free or Die and the Back in Black), and so any snapshot of the fridge at any point in time could easily be lower. But I'd guess it's normally low 90's.

It's interesting to list out what's in the fridge. Not sure I've ever done this before, and it gives an interesting overall picture of what I like to drink. Thanks for the topic!

That's pretty much how it is for me. I don't buy anything if it doesn't have a decent rating, and by decent I mean like 4.2 or higher.

a bit of a different take here...

I would say that I am usually drinking outstanding beer. The reason? I usually drink local beers, considering local to be broadly "Texas beers," although frequently they are from really local, like right down the street, or frequently no more than 50 miles away. Furthermore, my local breweries all kick ass! And when the price is almost always lower, and very often $8 or less a sixer, and even better still, frequently in cans... OUTSTANDING.

I think I rate around a 3.5 average, so I would say no.

Interesting. I've rated 1,208 beers. When I sorted my beer reviews by rating from top to bottom, at around 600 (midpoint), I'm right at a 4.00.

The parties I usually attend, if people looked in my cooler and saw those beer, I'd get a "deer in the headlights" look at first (in combination with a Patrick the starfish open mouth drool), followed by a scowl and then a close of the cooler and go get a Bud Light out of someone elses cooler! That is how it would play out. Might be 1 or 2 beer advocates who would get excited at best.

I drink whatever I enjoy. If there's overlap with outstanding beers, great. But if you limit yourself you're gonna miss out on something you might really enjoy.

Well, I just finished off a bottle of Enjoy By 3.14.15 and now I'm onto a tall boy of Sip of Sunshine, so today I am averaging world-class beers. But enough bragging... yes, I try to keep my brews in the outstanding range, but I still like trying new beers, regardless of rating.

Interesting topic, I'm new and have rated just a couple beers, but seem to find myself putting everything in that 3.5-4.5 zone where most BA users rate everything. Ratings would be a little more useful if people used a broader scale, but I think the vast majority of the beers being drank and rated by users are at the very least enjoyable, even if not all epic. I think I'd have a hard time giving a beer that I liked drinking a 2 or 2.5 out of 5 just because it didn't stack up to my favorites in that style.

Yes, substantial percentage. Only drink the best of the styles I like. I'm no ticker, and I don't try anywhere near as many beers as decades past. Much happier drinking the best examples out there.

I usually drink pretty good beer. Sometimes after drinking high end beer over several weeks, I find myself wanting something like a Corona.
