The base beer for KBS is not FBS, sorry don't have a link though.

Since it says so on the Internet, then it has to be true.

I've seen the claim so many times on this site that FBS is NOT the base beer for KBS, so it has to be true.

I went to a Breakfast Stout Breakfast event in GR and Dave Engbers was there and said it's not FBS. It's a different coffee-chocolate stout. Also, to the guy above at Black Rock as well, that rep was wrong. CBS is not KBS aged in maple syrup bourbon barrels. It's just the same base as KBS.

Yep, still listed as an IMPERIAL stout aged in Bourbon barrels, by the people who make it. The KBS, that is.

    What was the question again?

Maybe this is why there is confusion - according to this article, the first test batch of what would become KBS was FBS aged six months in Jack Daniel's whiskey barrels. The first formal batch of KBS however used a new imperial Russian stout recipe in bourbon barrels.

Also, according to Founders own website CBS is not KBS in maple barrels, but the same KBS base aged in spent bourbon barrels that have most recently been aging pure Michigan maple syrup.

Looks like the Founders rep was wrong on both fronts!

So FBS is its own thing while CBS and KBS have the same base beer but with different chocolate and coffee ratios and aged in different barrels? I know I got more chocolate from CBS and more coffee from KBS, at least when it's fresh.

You may be right, the Founders site actually doesn't say anything about CBS using the exact same recipe as KBS. Yet another article mentions that CBS used a modified recipe to account for the extra sugar left behind by the maple in the barrels, which makes sense.

Bottom line: FBS, KBS, CBS all have different recipes with KBS in second use barrels (bourbon -> KBS) and CBS in third use barrels (bourbon -> maple syrup -> CBS). Maybe one day I'll meet a Founders brewer and can ask them...

We're hosting our second Annual Stout City event here in NJ. We've got CBS and last year's KBS being tapped that night. If anyone is in the area be sure to stop by.

Even that third use barrel part might not be accurate. As far as the first batch of CBS went, I was told by a brewer there that it went Bourbon -> KBS -> Maple syrup -> CBS

That this product here, actually was aged in spent KBS barrels, not second use bourbon barrels. I'm curious if that's why the labeling for the product says "Bourbon Barrel Matured" instead of "Bourbon Barrel Aged"

Pretty sure that brewer was wrong. Blis has a hot sauce aged in KBS barrels and it says so on the label but the maple syrup is aged in pure bourbon barrels. Sweet Repute was aged in these barrels and there was no evidence of KBS influence in that beer at all.
