This thread is an effort to compile information on all the previous years of Dark Lord Day. As time goes on, details get fuzzy, articles become harder to find. There are well written recaps for the more recent years, but quality information on the first few years especially is hard to come by. My own memory of past Dark Lord Days begins to meld and it can become difficult to differentiate what happened what year. People always seem to have arguments over details, so I thought it would be nice to have an organized thread.

If anyone else thinks this project is interesting, please comment with any details and resources you have. Ticket prices? Bands? Allocations? Bottles produced. Number of Attendees? Good pictures or video. Etc.. are the type of details I am looking for here. I'll start this off with what I have. Please let me know if I made any mistakes.

    Dark Lord Day History

    2002-2003

Dark Lord was first brewed in 2002, only 5 barrels were produced. Apparently Starbucks coffee was used in one of the early batches (2002 or 2003?) before they switched to Intelligentsia. Other early ingredients included molasses, honey, and vanilla.

    2011
    Details:
Several big changes were made this year. They put up fences around the grounds, and only allowed entry to ticket holders. The tickets were sold from an actual ticket seller and tickets had bar codes so that they were not easily counterfeited. This is also the first year barrel aged variants were bottled and available via scratch off. No grills were allowed, along with the fences caused this year to be much more crowded, everyone was stuck inside the gates making the lines for drafts very tight. Coolers and folding chairs were allowed inside, creating large bottlenecks inside.

I forgot BA doesn't let you edit posts after 15 minutes, will make this thread somewhat difficult. Will just have to post updates and make a new updated post later in the thread.

Nice compilation. Maybe BA can give you super user editing powers for the thread to keep it going. The 2005 video is very interesting. Not sure if it's something which can be confirmed but it is quite possible 2005 was the last year they allowed beardless men at DLD.

Just an interesting observation I had - I watched a random video on YouTube from the 2007 release and noticed the holders people were using then.

And you guys thought the cardboard carries made you nervous? Yesh. I'd be cradling those things like a newborn child. It's also depressing the allotment used to be six, but hey it could always be worse.

Yeah I remember those. I think they were actually safer than the cardboard carriers. Pulling the waxed bottles out of those actually took some force.

Funny thing, I didn't even purchase the entire 6 bottle allotment in 2007. I found the idea of buying 6 $15 bottles ridiculous. In retrospect of course...

This is pretty cool, nice job! Wish I was in on the ground floor to watch it evolve over the years but I guess I'll just have to live through this thread. Hoping my first DLD is next year.

I want to say that the ticket buying process in 2009 was different than what you've posted above. IIRC, you signed up ahead of time with your email address and they emailed out links to people in the wee hours of the AM. I remember waking up around 6:30 EST, checking my email, clicking a link and buying tickets without any problem.

2010 was the year they tweeted out the link to the store at 6AM or something crazy like that.

And 2011 was the first year of pickup groups with assigned times - A at 12:00, B at 2:00, etc.

There is definitely a lot more oral history than written history on this topic. I had the pleasure of talking with a gentleman at DLD last year who has attended every year. I wish I took notes. We talked a lot about logistics and the overwhelming growth of the event over the years and I think you're spot on there.

Really interesting guy. He wouldn't even accept any of my pours. Just comes in, grabs his bottles, soaks it all in for a few hours, and leaves. I wouldn't be surprised if there are several more like him out there. The Beer Elders if you will...
