Bayernbiere Bought and Drunk

    Black Weiße? Wonder if it's supposed to be a cross between a Schwarzbier and a Weiß?* I'd imagine it has a touch of roasted malt character to it, so probably not similar to a Doppelbock, or Wizenbock. And a Dunkelweiß (dark Weißbier @Ungespundetes) is usually not roasty like a Schwarzbier.

    I've seen Moosbacher locally, wonder if this one is available?

    *Edit: Just says "Dark Wheat Beer" at their web site, so I wonder why they chose to use "schwarze" instead of the traditional "dunkel?"

    Well, as I said, tacking "Schwarz" on to the name leads you to think of a Schwarzbier character -- a little roastier, even drier than a typical Dunkelweizen, but I'd have to try the beer to see where the flavor character falls. They may be using "schwarz" just to be unique, even though misleading.

    Don't take my word as Gospel here, but I think they are the same thing. I think "Schwarze-Weisse" is just an intentional oxymoron, the "Black-White beer". Hofbrau calls theirs a Schwarze Weisse and I think I've seen some others. I've never taken it to mean anything but a Dunkelweizen with a clever name.

    I agree. I think the difference between a Dunkelweizen and a Schwarze Weisse may not be so black-and-white. (Sorry... :slight_frown:)

    Had never seen HB labeling theirs as a "schwarz," then again -- I don't think I've ever seen their "dark" Weizen around here before.

    Just seems odd to call it black and not just dark -- I wonder if Warner says anything about it in his book on German Wheat.

    Last week, I had a black Gose; Stone came out with a black Kölsch, so probably.

    Isn't New Glarus Laughing Fox more or less a dark Kristallweizen?

    in my experience, in bavaria,sadly no.
    would love to try one though..........

    Yep. They call it a Kristallweizen but it definitely was darker like a dunkelweizen would be.

    Interesting. When I reviewed the Laughing Fox back in 2011 I described it as a "deep gold," a description I know I'd never use on the beer in Grant's image. Might have to look into it again.

    Enjoyed a Kristallweizen with my Schweinshaxe at "Die Hütte" in Wiesbaden.

    I'm in a roasted pork induced coma now...:grinning:

    That looks simply incredible. Sell this picture to the owners, it's great quality too.

    On that note, has anyone ordered pig knuckle from their local US butcher? Experiences/tips?

    This was the best I've had to date - the skin had just a perfect hint of brown sugar (or maple syrup) taste. Just a slight hint, enough to let you know there was a tiny bit of sweetness. Perfection, in my opinion.

    Oh, and the dumpling... I leave it to the last since they are nothing special, but this one was delishious.

    Maybe I'll just email the image to the restaurant. It's really just an iPhone snapshot composed in a few seconds after the food landed on the table.

    A Kristallweizen (as opposed to the Hefeweizen) is not bottle conditioned and filtered clear. You can see through it like through a crystal, hence the name. One could make a Dunkelweizen like that but you still wouldn't be able to see through it, would you ? :slight_smile:

    see many,many dunkles, you can see through almost all of them. see [​IMG] .
    anyway,giving the supposed origin of the name as a reason for their nonexistence seems odd to me..........
