    This article is kinda funny.

    http://www.pastemagazine.com/articles/2015/04/session-double-ipa-and-other-beer-terms-i-hope-to.html

Does make me wonder, if the beer industry was to eradicate certain styles as descriptors, which ones would you be fine with losing, and what style would you place the "left behind" in?

As for myself, I could care less. 100 styles, 10000 styles, I don't judge (literally) so it doesn't bother me (ok, "session" DIPA is kinda odd..), but I'm guessing there are some strong emotions when it comes to the number of styles.

Come on, every beer deserves its own style.

Well the writer just has to give up the notion that "IPA" is a style. The brewers and the fangeekdom have pretty much nailed the lid shut on that coffin. "IPA" is now a flavor descriptor like "Sweet" "Funky" "Roasty" It simply means that whatever beer it's tagged to has a hoppy component.

I love quip at the end- about the black white belgian... I knew exactly where he was going with it, and all I had to do was hover over the link to confirm my amusement and foresight. There was a fair amount of real life lol-ing. And damn, I've had Black is the new Wit. It's awesome, at least, the Terrapin one is.

I once asked where the bartender was at the house of Black Belgian White ale, and the faceless man told me all men must serve.

The article makes some good points. I think styles started falling apart with black IPAs and white stouts.

As I understood it, the Shmaltz thing was a joke. Something like their anniversary beers usually being very high ABVs but they lowered it last year to be sold everywhere, and this was somehow a continuation of that joke.

I'm surprised Dogfish Head's American Beauty, which they call an "imperial pale ale", wasn't mentioned... I guess omitting the "india" isn't that big of a deal, but it struck me as odd.

And some DFH employee snarkily commented on my instagram photo of that beer saying "Its not an IPA, its an imperial pale ale." like I was a dumbass for not understanding these vastly different styles that have the same acronym.

Well, that's obnoxious. Sounds like that employee is drinking the kool-aid.

I thought it was obviously a joke. It's lost on this guy though.

One of my local brewers, Dave's Brew Farm, has a 3% ABV session ale called "Double Imperial." I got a good laugh out of that.

The author seems to have a hard time differentiating between:
    - a tongue in cheek play on labeling
    - an anomaly whose raison d'ĂȘtre is opposition to a norm
    - the increasing differentiation of IPAs because of their market percentage

I agree. But there should be no repeating allowed. So, first we need to vote on which beer gets to keep IPA, then the others will need to adopt new names for their styles.
