It went awesome, thank you. And in no small part thanks to some of the suggestions you yourself made specifically about Liquid Riot, J's and Portland Public Market
Side note: do you know any background on that chain link fence full of locks down by the piers? We were so caught up in everything else I didn't bother to look too much into it while we were there

    New IPA: Captain Lawrence IPA.

Evenin' NBSers, with special greetings both to all you huggers of hop bines and to those among us who have friends and relatives being honored on tomorrow's national holiday.

This beer was especially chosen because of the brewery. Captain Lawrence was the name of a Militia Captain from Westchester County, NY in the American Revolution. His name was given to a street and then became the name of the Brewery.

As usual my review is in progress here (and subject to revision until I've finished the beer):

    http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/12959/89437/?ba=drtth

Since we've been asked not to post music video links in this thread I've once again posted two links in that other thread (WB....).

The music for this evening is chosen specifically to fit with remembering those for whom tomorrow's holiday was created and includes two different renditions of Amazing Grace.

The lyrics to Amazing Grace were written in 1779 and set to the present music in the US in mid 1800s.

The first link is to an instrumental version of the music.

Over the years from the mid 1800's on the song’s popularity grew primarily as a gospel song. Then in 1960s it became closely associated both with the Civil Rights Movement and Vietnam war protests. Since the 60s one of the singers who has had the song as one of her signature songs is a woman named Judy Collins who in the late 60s made a recording that hit the top 100 and remained on the charts for several weeks. In version in the second link, sung about 40 years after her recording, the voice still sounds as fresh and crisp as it does on that first recording. Those two links appear here.

    Cheers, All!

A final note for those of you out there with military service in your background, its time for a toast:

"We knew them, we’ll remember them, and they will not be forgotten."

    <Raises glass>

    "To fallen comrades."

Picked this beer up on a trip to Toledo with the excuse of a family visit to the zoo which by the way was spectacular. First let me say this might be the coolest label ever.

Pour is a deep dark brown with a small cappuccino colored head. Smells of Belgian yeast, leather, nuttiness, tobacco. Very interesting taste. Not sure if the Belgian candied syrup ferments out but that's the strongest taste for me. Figs, nuts, leather, bitter chocolate, coffee, malts.

I enjoyed this beer through The Grand Budapest Hotel allowing it to warm up for different tastes. A deeply enjoyable beer.

Greetings BAs! I'm getting off to a late start, but thankfully I have tomorrow off and can fully commit to the task at hand.

We have a whole load of seedlings that we started about 6 weeks ago, and since the weather is finally getting to the point where they will be Ok to leave outside after the sun goes down, I started to do my final plantings this afternoon. That's after I painted the deck yesterday, moved all of the furniture back on, mowed the lawn and did all of the trimming. Tomorrow I shall finish up the planting in the back yard, as well as trim a few bushes that need a haircut already. It'll definitely be much more relaxing when I go back to work on Tuesday, I tellyouwhat...

Anyway- let me start my evening off with an after-dinner espresso-
    [IMG]
They were nice enough to include the lemon peel- just the way I like it...
I'm digging it. It definitely is named properly, both in terms of dark roast flavor as well as mouthfeel. Somehow what comes across as being lean for a beer would be a solid body for a coffee, so what I'm experiencing here comes across as quite appropriate. The lactose sweetness is a bit much for my tastes; I'd prefer a more bitter drink. Does the lemon peel do anything? I can't say at this moment- maybe it comes on stronger the more you have it. As it is now, it's a straightforward and tasty drink, just like I expected. Just what I needed, too, after taking a much needed short siesta on the couch just before. An enjoyable B+ (3.85)

This is probably my latest (night) NBS post, since I don't work tomorrow.

Schells Firebrick Vienna Lager has big toasted malt, bready notes, sweet fruity notes, and floral hops . Pleasant aroma for the style and well-balanced between the malty and hoppy notes.

The flavor of bread, toasted malt, sweet fruity notes, and a touch of floral hops really make this a pleasure to drink.

Have a great night! See all of you next week.

There are so many worthy beers here today. I am going to slide one in here for the underdog...Harpoon Summer Beer. This is a beer brewed in the Kolsch style and a new beer from my own back yard (well, 40 miles north). With all the breweries around the area including some heavy hitters, I have never spent too much time exploring Harpoon.

The beer poured a crystal clear golden color with about a half inch of frothy head that dropped quickly to a foam ring. The aroma was fairly bready...almost but not quite like a sourdough. The other dominant aroma was floral, then slightly green grassy. No citrus notes reached my nose. The taste followed along. Very breadline at first, then a wash of floral green field flavors, followed by a very quick hit of bitter and then it is gone. Carbonation was moderate, medium bodied beer possibly a little heavier. Unassuming, well made, mild, drinkable beer which is just what I wanted today.

I'm learning that I don't always need to have a palate shredding mind blowing beer. I enjoyed drinking this perfectly fine refresher from a brewery I have learned a great deal about in the past several months.

"Poured into an English Pint. The head was an impressive 2-3 fingers and the lacing was great. Color was an odd yellow, I guess due to the addition of the tripel. I don't want to lower my look score because of it because it is such an original beer style, but I'm going to take a little off. Smell is strong of Belgian candi; it's also citrusy/pineapple, resiny, and east coast hoppy. Taste and mouth feel remind me of Lagunitas Brown Shugga. Sweet and super frothy candi with a mild carmel malt. The hop profile is complex, like the smell, its a combo of piney, citrusy, and east coast bitter hops. Very interesting."

I think this will be my last beer for the night. Now up Ruination 2.0, I though with them redoing Riunation it was going to be more like some the big citrus/tropical fruits of more the highly rated DIPAs, still good through.

    4.12/5 rDev -3.7%
    look: 4.25 | smell: 4 | taste: 4.25 | feel: 4 | overall: 4

22 oz bottle, best before 7/21/15, poured into a teku

A- A clear golden amber with a three finger white head.

S- Citrus, lemon, pineapple/tropical fruits, sweet caramel malts, piney, slightly boozy.

T- Piney/resin finish, some citrus, hints of tropical fruits, sweet caramel malts.

M- Smooth, medium body, slightly sticky.

O- I am finding this a little underwhelming. I love Stone and I am a big fan of RuinTen and the first first Ruination, but I was hoping for something fruitier and drier.

New Beer Sunday and New ALABAMA Beer Sunday on my quest to review a beer from all states. Here's Back Forty Freckle Belly IPA:

    look: 4.25 | smell: 2.5 | taste: 3.5 | feel: 3.5 | overall: 3.5

3/25/15 bottle date. Probably pushing it.

A- Amber body with good clarity. Frothy and persistent head. 4.25

S- Smells like an ESB with toasty malts and a faint aroma of grapefruit. Disappointing. 2.5

T- Again, very ESB-like or English IPA-like. An improved floral flavor though. Getting a bit off buttery off-flavor. Toasted malts and caramel. I actually like the malt-quality here. Finishes with a bit of yeasty flavor. 3.5

M- Pretty smooth and easy-drinking, albeit malt-heavy as opposed to showcasing the hops. The bitterness is there but mellow. It's a bit toasty upfront, then bitter, than finishes florally. 3.5

Wish I'd gotten a fresher bottle for assessment, but hey, a 2-month old Elevated IPA still tastes exceptional, so I feel justified in reviewing this. It's a decent beer but veers to ESB territory, showcasing a toasted bread flavor that is enjoyable but probably will offend most hopheads.

The look was off-putting for a lager. Smelled like and ale and tasted like and ale. Did notice and like that as it warmed the malt smoothed it out.

    NBS 2 for 1 Time!

Didn't get a chance to post the new beer I had earlier and working on another now so I'll hit both up here in one shot.

Earlier I drank a Brewery Vivant Triomphe:

Labeled as a Belgian Style India Pale Ale, was not a fan of this one. Did have some yeasty or Saison like Belgian qualities as well as some IPA qualities but both were very muddled. At times I could pick out the Belgian side and other times the IPA side but each were hard to discern without trying very hard which made it tough to relax and enjoy this beer.

And now time for round two: New Glarus Thumbprint Enigma:

Now this one I thoroughly enjoyed. Nice cherry tartness dominates this one, a hint of vanilla sweetness ads a bit of balance and a really dry finish at the end. Good stuff!

    Cheers!

This beer wanted out of the can, it was foaming as soon as it was opened. Poured a pretty orangish brown with a thick dirty white head. THe foam leaves a lovely heavy lacing on the glass.
Smell is of piney hops with a belgian spicy undertone. Taste is of light floral hops and Belgian yeast spices. Caramel undertones are starting to show up as the beer warms.
Mouth feel and after taste are similar to a belgian strong ale or ipa in its softness and spices linger on the palate for a lengthy amount of time.
I Like this pretty well, I am not going to rant about weather it is to style or not. I am still a newbie at this, but I would venture to say there is more belgian than english. But who am I to say? I will say I like it fairly well, It's a solid brew by Surly who so far have been pretty impressive to me.

My third stab at this post, and like the first two, while traveling in the RV. This week we are in Anderson Valley, CA, and home to brewery of same name. Super nice people and great taproom if you ever have the chance to drive through.

This evening I'm reviewing Andeson Valley Brewing Company's "Huge Arker" Bourbon Barrel Imperial Stout. Aged 6 months in Wild Turkey Bourbon barrels:

Black pour from 22 oz bomber from brewery into my SAPP. Thick tan foam. Thick lace from top of glass to bottom. 4.5

Bourbon nose first and far away. A little chocolate malt as liquid warms. 4.25

Whiskey flavor up front and cocoa nibs. Alcohol on first exhale (I like). Semi sweet toffee and oaky/whiskey finish. 4.5

Alcohol burn on tip of the tongue (nice). There is a dry oaky/wooden tongue coating. Medium mouthfeel. 4.25

Excellent bourbon/boozy linger-this one will sneak up on you. I truly enjoyed a lot and I'm not a huge bourbon barrel fan. 4.5

Hello Fellow Imbibers of Impy Stouts, Helpful Hophounds, Dabblers of Dobbels, and Filanderers of Flanders.

I look forward, each and every week, to the opining and banter herein. And what a start off we had to day. The prose of @cavedave was spot on! And the everpresent @utopiajane and all the others who frequently share insights, compliments, wisdom, and even the occasional jabs make this a unique little corner of the interwebs.

Weather here is cool again. At least until the sun breaks through. Then it can get hot...for a few minutes. Anyway, perfect weather for Scottish Fest at the Orange County Fairgrounds. Almost got my fill of Pipes and Drums. God I love bagpipe music. Got to watch some of the smaller Grade 4 bands, as well as 2 of the Grade 3. Not a single clunker among them. Also saw a good set by the Ploughboys and a raucous (slightly whiskey fueled) set by the Wicked Tinkers. But onward...

For today's virtual bottle share I cracked this...it was...ok. Hopefully I'll be back with another.

    Green Flash Soul Style IPA

This one starts out with a swirl of clear amber that launches a tightly packed 2 fingers of off-white foam. Smell is somewhat tropical, with a hint of peppery spice. Not sure where this one is going. Drinks more tropical but some pine and grass comes through with a hint of resiny malt. The finish goes more in a tropical earthy direction with some random yeasty pepper notes. Overall, not bad, I just think it went in opposite directions at times.
