    New Cream Ale Sunday

Hello all! A chilly, but sunny, day here in Milwaukee. In the 50's...wondering where the 80 degrees that we had two days ago went...lol

Today's selection wasn't bad, but certainly nothing special. It's one that I noticed the year and a half or so ago when I moved to Wisconsin, but didn't try until today. It's from Milwaukee Brewing Company. (I still have not done the tour, but heard it is fun - I have it on the list to do this summer.) Outboard...I scored it a (generous) 3.49 which is a bit above the average score.

    Cheers!

Yeah- sticking with seasonals seems to be the best bet on that end.

I love NBS, but I recently just couldn't help but notice that I don't get me any love from Cavedave! You conspicuously skip over my posts every time. I just gotta get a "like" from you, one of the NBS poobahs, or life just ain't worth living. Next Sunday I'll be waiting!

Oh man. Losing a whole batch of homebrew. That is painful. My heart sank reading your post. I can't imagine what you felt like.

I was at State Line Liquors friday for a tasting. On their growler board they have a couple that they sell for 5 bucks. They had this one. It is Long Trails Coffee Stout. Now I know they use these specials to clear out stuff so figured it might be old. So my best guess is that this had a year on it. It was very creamy almost like a cask conditioned. The coffee was muted, but I am betting it evolved into some complex flavors. It had a very nice alcohol creaminess not burn to it. Almost tasted like it spent some time in a very good bourbon barrel. I would say one of the best 5 bucks I have ever spent on beer. This picture was taken after it had been in the glass for a while. The creamy head did not last long.

New Beer Sunday: A new English style IPA, the Brooklyn East India Pale Ale

Evenin NBSers, with special greetings to all you hop bine huggers who also thrive on rich malty flavors.

Well today has been a busy one with a few chores and a bit of sightseeing at a local historical site that just recently opened to the public. Some really informative exhibits of events and artifacts dating as far back as when William Penn first opened Penn's Woods (Pennsylvania) to immigration and settlement.

The weather today has been a bit boarderline in that its warm but with the higher humidity that sometimes moves into this area and makes things a bit "moist" and/or "sweaty." Fortunately we have a front moving it that should drop the temperature and dew point for a few days.

This evening's new beer is the Brooklyn East India Pale Ale which surprised me when I found that I had not tried it yet despite my appreciation of many of Brooklyn Brewings beers. And since we've now got a grocery store eatery within reasonable distance that had some fresh.... This is a nice representative of the style where the malt is prominent but the hops still play nicely as part of the cast of the show.

As usual my review (which is subject to revision until I finish the beer) can be found here:

This evening's choice of music for listening is triggered by two recent events. I had a chance a few days back to watch an excellent movie called the Shawshank Redemption (which I supect many of you have seen) and one particular scene reminding me that I'd not listened to my all time favorite opera, Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro, for a while.

Since we've been asked to not post links to music videos in this thread, as I often do I created a post in that other thread (WBA....) that contains two links.

    http://www.beeradvocate.com/communi...u-drinking-now-953.297941/page-9#post-3706686

The first of those two links is to the scene from the Shawshank Redemption that triggered my desire to listen again to Mozart. Its the scene where Dufresne locks himself in the Warden's office and turns on the Public Address system to broadcast a Mozart duet from the Marriage of Figaro to the whole prison. Red comments on the effect the music had for him and so the second link shows two other ladies whose voices soar while they act out the scene in the opera and help with understanding what those "two ladies were singing about."

Anyone who enjoyed that scene in the movie probably enjoys opera even if they didn't realize it.

    Cheers, all!

    New Michigan IPA Sunday

Things are good in West MI. A cool front has come through dropping temps into the 50- low60 range. My dad was in town for the weekend, so we enjoyed a lot of youth sports with the kiddos and wholesome family goodness.

After a couple of shifts of drop-in lacrosse, and a rack of ribs that a friendly neighbor delivered, this beer quenched my thirst. Maybe not the best IPA out there, but certainly not a drain pour.

New Glarus has been waxing their 750 Fruit beers like that for decades. Not sure why it is so thin, must be the type of wax used considering there are so many made each year.

    Greeting NBS Friends.
Thanks as always to those fine folks who start us off. A tip of my glass to @utopiajane (Maria) for an eloquent start to our virtual libations forum.

We've had some early June Gloom here in SoCal, but it's been burning off for the last few days to reveal some pretty strong sunshine...too strong. But hey it could be worse. My heart goes out to those of you in Texas and Oklahoma. I wish you a prompt retreat of the waters, (and some of the critters that try to seek refuge above them).

Today I found this one on tap: Mike Hess Umbrix Rye Imperial Stout
    3.91/5 rDev -2.7%
    look: 3.75 | smell: 4 | taste: 4 | feel: 3.75 | overall: 3.75

On tap at Pie Dog in Fullerton.

Burnished liquid leather pour capped by a tightly packed wet milky tan head that quickly dissipates leaving a thin ring around the edge.
Nose brings a coffee roast meets peat and lite "I'm not sure hint of sweetness."
Taste is more of the same roast and peat with some nuttiness that heads toward a slight pecan and ever so light caramel.
Finish stays slightly sweet with coffee roast and peat brewing followed by a slightly slick nuttiness that then hints at vanilla. Mouthfeel is slightly chewy.
Quite good. Alcohol is subdued, no discernible heat. Smooth.

Nice to be able to pop in for a pour. The wife thought I was only going on a Costco run.(Shhh):grinning:

Really delicious. Love the bourbon. I wish I could get my hands on a few more bottles.
Side note: I haven't had any of the other planet series. I got close to acquiring a Jupiter a few weeks back, but was a bit late to the bottle shop. Definitely wish I was on the hunt when they all began many months ago :slight_frown:

Well this has been a busy week. Been busting my hump with flooring demolition, and finally this morning started the install process. Got to get it useable (not finished) by Saturday. And then get furniture out of the basement. Fun times. Feels good to start install after taking way to long to demo. So not much else exciting going on here. On to beer! Up for today is Stone RIS Chai Spiced, sorry for the lack of picture. This tastes more like pumpkin pie than chai to me, I understand there are similarities, but I've never had chai tasting quite like this. And it is a little sweet too. I like the concept but not the execution. I guess I should stop buying Odd Year releases, 2015 was quite the bust (though I enjoyed 2011 in spite of no one else doing so).

    Cheers!

I don't know now rare it is in the rest of the country, but I know it doesn't make it out to NC for sure. Probably the best smelling beer I have ever had. I had to trade for it, but I am glad I did!

Good evening NBS. Hope everyone enjoyed another week of work and other things. I got some homebrew related stuff done this weekend; racked a session mead onto more tart cherries, and cleaned a keg I kicked on thursday. Discovered mold on the footing of the keg so I cleaned out that corner of the keezer. Need to get a mini dehumidifier soon to keep that from happening again.

    Here are today's new beers:

Really nice session IPA! Aromas and flavors of grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, mango, melon, pear, lemon zest, orange peel, and pine; with light-moderate racker/bready malt presence and herbal/grassy hop earthiness. Moderate amount of pine/grassy bitterness on the finish; with a very smooth, crisp, and moderately sticky mouthfeel and finish. Good robustness of hop/citrus peel flavors with minimal watery feelings to me; not too dry with some lingering hop flavors and stickiness on the finish. No cloying or astringency. Liked this one a lot more than right*o*way. Really nice and flavorful. 3.9
    [IMG]

Really nice stuff. Aromas come off fairly muted but similar to the flavors. Grapefruit, orange zest, pine, caramel, raisin, toffee, toast, vanilla, bourbon, and oak. Fair amount of pine/citrus rind bitterness on the finish. Nice smooth finish with moderate creaminess and hop stickiness. Well balanced malt, hop, and barrel flavors; with good bitterness balance as well. Very smooth sipping, minimal lingering warmth after the finish. Overall really enjoyable, but not really what I was hoping for out of it. The bourbon barrel complexity had good presence, but I have seen barrel treatment do much more drastic transformations. So I would still say I prefer the original, even if it is different beer in contrast. 3.88

A bit of a gusher over here, but not too crazy. Great stuff! Aromas and flavors of big lemon, pineapple, grapefruit, orange peel, pear, apple, white wine, peppercorn, clove, wheat, hay, straw, grass, and oak; with musty funky yeast earthiness. Nice spicy/earthy yeast finish with great balance between yeast and spice notes. Light-medium bodied with good carbonation and a crisp finish. Really excellent stuff. I have had the JP version; but even with the same recipe, I would assume they are using their house bugs separately. Seem to get a bit of a drier profile here with more brett; and I recall having a lot more tart grapefruit notes in the JP version which are fairly restrained in this version. I loved both basically the same amount though. 4.1

What's up NBS players. Better late than never right? Beauty of a day here on the island. Very much a summer feel for most of the day with some much needed rain rolling in for the evening and next few days. Very busy this weekend getting shit done and really not as much time as I would like for beer.

My new beer today is Over Easy, from Otter Creek Brewing. A session ale racking in at 4.7% and with a bottle date of 3/9/15. Although this is not real time I drank a bunch of these this afternoon.

The pour is a beauty. Straw blonde with very little clarity but no sediment either. Nose comes off pretty subtle with slight hops. Initial sip yields a very crisp and juicy feel. Nice hop profile with very slight pie tones and a nice bitter finish. I really enjoyed the mouth feel. Not watery at all and it really maintains some flavor integrity.

Overall, a good take on the style but still not my favorite. I'm in the mid 3's to early 4's at best,
