You're right. Should have read more carefully. Or should be drinking fewer double IPAs...

When they get old, they can seem a little alcohol forward to me. I was served a Union Jack the other day that was a malty, hot mess. It was also 7 months old.

You and Chris are true professionals. Couldn't have said it better if I typed it myself. I've been searching for a boozy IPA, but have yet to find one.

    Boozy DIPA's/triple IPA's OTOH ...........................

I'll agree that fresh IPAs, doubles etc, are not what I'd consider boozy. But old stock when the hops fade and it's malty I get the hot boozy part. I've had older Dfh 90 I would say were boozy Devil Dancer about the same, they're unpleasant at best, drain pours at the worst.

If you're not careful, Simtra will kick your teeth in, but that's a "TIPA".

Just had a few Limbos over the weekend. I agree that it does drink a bit like a double (7.5 is right on the line)but thats probably why i like it so much. Only time i thought it might have come off boozy was at the bottom of the bottle when the beer was warmed up.

Yeah, man, me, too - didn't seem to get as much love on the site as I'd have thought - but I thought it was tits...
Had the Simtra, too - and I agree with ya there, as well :sunglasses:

I would double like this. I think the lack of Simtra love is due to not getting it fresh.
I've said it time and time again:
I'll take fresh Simtra over Pliny the Younger all day, twice and Saturday and, if I can handle it, three times on Sunday! I'll fucking do it! Then spit in PtY's face, kick him in the knee caps and laugh at him as I give him a wet willy.

I too couldnt think of one so I searched my ratings. I have rated 54 American IPAs. The only one I could say was even remotely boozy if I had to pick one was Mad Tree PsycHOPathy. There are plenty of beers that drink hotter than their ABV, including many of the DIPAs mentioned here, but not when it comes to singles for me.

I would guess that the hops from the first one you had altered your taste buds to where you could only pick up the alcohol in the next one, or it was a shitty beer.

Yeah, and I think there are some semantics issues here, too. To me, "boozy" means having characteristics in flavor and aroma akin to "booze" (which I associate with dark spirits like bourbon, whiskey, Scotch, etc.), but some use "booziness" to mean "heat" (as in alcoholic potency/awareness of abv, not chili spice level (another difference in terminology )).
In either event, no IPA (no including DIPAs and TIPAs and QIPAs :grimacing: whaaaat?) ever really struck me as "hot" or "boozy" - those terms are more applicable to the big boy beers

Good point. As a liqour consumer also (especially bourbon) I throw out "boozy" or "hot" when I just detect a lot of alcohol in general. I think it is unnecessary when drinking a World Wide Stout for example. Obviuosly it gets difficukt to mask all ethenol when you are in the 20% (or 40 proof) range. It is useful for describing some of those 10-12% ers that drink like 15+ though.

120 min ipa. I know it's well rated... and I LOVE ipas..... but I thought it was gross. WAY too boozy. IMO, ipas should be 8% not 18%.

I love DIPAs... but honestly, 120 min is just unbalanced and frankly weird. Who wants a hot ipa of any variety?
