Why do I have to verify my account?

    Thanks for listening to the feedback and coming up with a solution. Not everyone (probably those without Paypal or a credit card) will be satisfied yet, but this is definitely an improvement from the 9.99 earlier.

    I agree that this is very fair.

    And I also want to compliment you on taking action on this so quickly. It is good to see that you guys take us serious.

    Simply put, you have restored my confidence in BeerAdvocate and I will be getting Verified soon.

    Why can't we just add cellphone numbers from europe aswell?

    I'm not making any problem for 1 dollar.

    But i don't have a Paypal account and i don't have a credit card.

    So is it possible that another dutch Guy uses his Paypal for me? So i can wire him 1 dollar?
    All this trouble for trading.... It used to be A fun hobby

    It's simply not supported at this time (due to technical and financial considerations, as mentioned in this thread), and using someone else's account (or number) will put your account at risk.

    No phone? No credit card? You can create a PayPal account and link a bank account to it; no credit card needed.

    Minor aside, but would it be possible to leave parts of the trading forums open to unverified users? I was thinking specifically about the IP and Beer Trading Talk & Help sub-forums.

    I meant for posting since verification doesn't really provide the benefit it does when compared to the normal ISO:FT subforum.

    The only thing I saw in this thread that could be relevant was "But we've deemed it necessary to apply verification to portions of the site to help protect the community at large.". I tried to go through your previous posts and the announcement itself, but I didn't really find anything there that would pertain to those two subforums.

    I can see how verification would protect users when people have to ship things, but I don't see what protection is required for in-person trades nor for a discussion sub-forum that may pertain to trades, but wouldn't directly involve trades. I guess just extra incentive to verify (a sort of carrot/stick)?

    @Todd, I definitely think that is very fair. I have and had no problem paying for this but at $10 it seemed a little steep. Thank you for your quick action in resolving this situation.

    For me it's not about the money. I just don't like the idea of giving out my phone number, and not receiving any tangible benefit. Nowhere have I seen mentioned what benefit users get from from verifying. It's like when a friend posts a link to an interesting item on Facebook, and when you click, you have to open an account to read the article. Why would I do that?

    Bad analogy. If you click something in Beer It Forward you don't need an account to read it.

    Anyway. I've already listed some of the benefits in How to Verify Your Account, and there's more to come, but being able to participate in the BIF forum seems like a tangible enough benefit for you alone. But that's a choice that you'll have to make.
