As I prepared for New Beer Sunday the weather started out sunny, extremely humid and primed for yard work. I accomplished a great deal of work earlier in the day. Now that I’m ready to share a “New” beer to me with my Ba Brothers and Sisters it is storming to beat all hell. Like we needed more RAIN!!!!!! I picked this bomber up on Friday because I wasn’t aware that Seventh Son had released a DIPA recently. I’ve had excellent luck with most of Seventh Sons Bomber releases so WHY NOT! ----------CHEERS to all!!!!!!

    SEVENTH SON SYZYGY

    American Double IPA
    Beer poured into Pint Glass
    750ml bottle
10.7% ABV IBU was not found

    Appearance - 4/5
Syzygy is clear yellow/orange with a tinge of pink in color. This DIPA has a head of white frothy foam made up of a lose network of medium sized bubbles. The head stands approximately three fingers high and hovers in the glass for a several minutes. The lacing left behind in the glass is a pronounced web of tiny bubbles as the offering disappears.
    Smell - 4.25/5
Seventh Son has introduced a fruity mix of peach and mandarin to this recipe which combines with wafts of piney hops.
    Taste - 4.5/5
There is a hint of sweet fruitiness with a backdrop of piney hops. Since my experience with DIPA’s is quite extensive Syzygy strikes me as a cross between Stone Ruination and Great Lakes Chillwave. Bitterness married with a fruity sweet gives this American DIPA a wonderful robust flavor.
    Mouth Feel – 4.25/5
This is a medium bodied brew that rolls on the tongue with a slight syrupy feel. The carbonation tingles the tongue perfectly.
    Overall - 4.25/5
Syzygy is an excellent expression of an American Double IPA pairing sweet fruity goodness with a robust piney-hoppy bitterness. The alcohol is hidden well but definitely has a punch at 10.7% ABV. I am very impressed with Seventh Son’s DIPA and would recommend it to all. I will definitely purchase this again.

After roasting alive all day today (both at work and afterward), now I'm finally getting around to the last of the six beers I got myself as a "late birthday present" a while back...

Matilda from Goose Island. This will actually be my first beer from Goose Island; their beers are generally kinda hard to find around here (I've seen the "312" beers and Goose IPA, and occasionally a variety pack, but none of the grocery stores carry Honker's Ale or any of the more-expensive beers they make.)

Color is dark golden, bordering on orange/coppery. Semi-clear, and with lots of bubbles coming up from the bottom -- there's a bit of haziness going on in there, but I can still read my phone screen through the glass... though it does look a bit fuzzy. Foam on top looks nice, not super thick but has a nice fluffy look to it, and seems to hang around in the form of a coating on top for quite a while.

Smell is fruity, a little bready early on (though at this point the fruity smells have overtaken that), and there's some definite Belgian yeast weirdness going on which reminds me a bit of some of the other Belgian-style beers I've tried. Some banana-like smells in there and some general fruitiness. Taste is interesting -- there's a very slight hint of almost tart fruitiness at first, shifting into the banana/fruity type flavors, and then a huge wave of dry, bready flavor at the end which fades into a little more of the fruity things afterward... and eventually once even that fades, there's a bit of a lingering white-bread type aftertaste. On a second sip, I'm actually being reminded a little of hay, oddly enough -- there's this flavor reminiscent of the smell of hay popping in here and there in the middle of initial "almost-faintly-tart fruitiness" flavor, suddenly coming up for a moment and then fading just as fast and then popping up again. I'm not sure I've picked up on anything quite like that in beer before, but it actually works pretty well here.

And I suppose this is a good time to note that I am not experiencing even the tiniest hint of an alcohol taste or mouth-warming. I had to double-check the bottle to see, yep, it's 7% ABV. Never would've guessed that at all -- a lot of the 7-8% range beers I've had came with a very obvious alcohol warming effect, but this doesn't seem any more obviously high-alcohol than your average 5% ABV beer. Sip #3 and it seems like the hay-like flavor is blending in with the bready thing I noticed at first, rather than popping in among the fruity flavors -- really interesting how that flavor seems to shift around so much, coming in early on one time and later another time. I'm only just now starting to feel the slightest bit of stomach-warming (drinking on a nearly empty stomach here, so... no surprise there.) I bet if I had this with food, or shortly after food, it would be utterly impossible to tell it was 7% ABV without either checking the label or drinking it all and finding out afterward. XD

The side of the glass I've been drinking from now no longer has much foam on top, but the rest of the beer still has a pretty nice coating even halfway through the glass. And I'm definitely starting to pick up that hay-like thing in the smell now too. What is that? A yeast-related thing? Whatever it is, I'd say it does add something to the beer -- it doesn't seem like an "off" sort of flavor/smell to me at all, despite how weird it sounds to be picking up the smell of dried-out hay in your beer. I'm guessing that probably is a yeast thing, Belgian-style beers do tend to have a lot of weird yeast flavors going on after all. My "sips" are getting to be more like gulps, this glass is definitely not going to last much longer -- somewhere between half and 1/3 full now after only four "sips." It's just so easy to drink a good bit of this at once that it's a little hard to slow down. It seems like I could easily drink two of these in a row if this wasn't my only bottle, though I might regret it afterward once the effects of the alcohol kicked in (but then again maybe not, two 7% ABV beers probably wouldn't be going that far even for me... I have finished off a 6.9% bomber before on my own after all, and two 12-ounce 7% beers wouldn't be too much different from one 22-ounce 7% beer.)

And now the fruitiness has shifted entirely away from being banana-like (I'm honestly not sure what fruit it reminds me of now... definitely "fruity" but I can't pin a specific fruit on the flavor I'm getting here), and the breadiness at the end has been entirely overtaken by that hay-like flavor. Interesting how the flavors in this beer shift around as I drink more and it warms up from "fridge temperature" to something a little warmer.

Yeah, this is really good. I've had a couple of higher-ABV pale Belgian-style ales before, and this one has some definite similarities, but also some definite differences -- and I think overall this has got to be my favorite of the style so far. I think I'll be getting some more of these the next time I make my way back to the local beer/wine store where I found this bottle -- I know they seemed to have a decent amount in stock when I was there last, at least, so hopefully there's a few still around when I go back again!

Time for NBS, and yet another beer from @smanson56 in the last NBS BIF round:

Crop Bistro & Brewery - Idletyme India Pale Ale
Nice solid IPA here. Hops really hit me as soon as I opened the bottle. Is just a little malt forward for my tastes, but still decent.

    Cheers!

An absolute ton of bourbon notes. This beer is thick, rich and chewy. It's everything I'd want in a BBA stout, except the 90+ degree weather. I'd drink this anytime anywhere.

I haven't posted in this thread in a long time. The beer that I'm consuming tonight is from my home state of Rhode Island. The beer is called Keraterra, it's their Plattelander saison fermented with brett and aged in wine barrels.

L: Pours a straw yellow with a small head. The head disappears almost immediately. Looks great either way.

S: Smells of vinous grapes mixed with zesty lemon. Also, there are some burst of fruits from the brett, a faint apple smell and orange also comes through. There is quite a fruity depth to this. The yeast is prominent as well, and I can actually tell how dry this beer will be just by the smell.

T: A bit of apricot first hits my tongue. Some red grapes come through from the wine barrels. Also, the apple and oranges come through as well. There's definitely some funkiness going on in here from the brett as well. It's not mouth puckering tart at all, rather a more refreshing tart which is definitely welcome. Nice depth here.
    wh
M: This has a medium to light mouthfeel which is very evident with how quickly I've downed this 750. The finish is very dry, which is nice in the sense that after each sip my mouth is ready for the next one. The 6.8% is not even detectable which is even better.

Overall: Proclamation hit this one out of the park. This is batch 2 according to Proclamation. I have batch 1 in the cellar and I'm not quite sure what the difference is, but I'm sure I like batch 1 as well. The depth here is very nice and the mouthfeel ensures that I could easily drink this beer without even knowing it. Dave and crew really did a great job knowing how to enhance their standard saison Plattelander. Great job, Proclamation.

Just finished mowing the yard on a hot day, now time for a ...vanilla porter? The only beer in my fridge I've never tried so it'll have to do. In fact this is my first vanilla porter ever.
Not as much of a vanilla taste as I was expecting. The vanilla more shows up in the aftertaste. Not the most flavorfull porter, but it is a pretty smooth tasting beer.

Third new beer of the night is Stillwater The Devil Is People, and I am impressed by this one!

    4.5/5rDev n/a
    look: 4 | smell: 4.5 | taste: 4.5 | feel: 4.75 | overall: 4.5

22 oz bottle poured into a teku

A- A clear golden straw color with a two finger white head that fades quickly.

S- Sour fruits, lime, lemon, green apples, great undertones of peat smokiness, faint wheat and coriander.

T- Souriness is fairly intense up front but nicely balanced by the smokiness, lemons, limes, smoky, touch of sweetness, some wheat and coriander, very nicely balanced.

    M- Smooth, dry, light body.

O- This is a fantastic sour and a steal at $13 a bomber. Highly recommend, one of the better beers from Stillwater. Smokiness adds great balance and complexity. Almost reminds me of a smoked version of Gose Gone Wild. (638 characters)

    New Citra Pale Ale
Robeerto Satyr Citra Pale Ale 5.15% ABV

So, appearance is golden yellow with a bit of orange, and a light head that disappears rather quickly. Smell is grapefruit and a bit of lemon zest. First sip, basic pale ale, with that grapefruit present in the back. Not bad, but personally I like a bit more hoppy punch in lighter ales. It is refreshing, and coming from Mexicali, Mexico where it can get 112 degrees, it's not a bad thing. I like the grapefruit/floral attributes but generally like a bit more hop bite.

    Cheers!

Hey there was a new beer for me today!

Mothman IPA from Greenbrier Valley Brewing company out of Maxwelton West Virginia. I was up in Shepherdstown for a play and checking out the small town. Nice place. Fun little pub I stopped into as well to have this beer too.

Ironically while shopping for beer I also found this canned and some other obscure West Virginia brews. So I can give that can a proper review later.

GreenBrier Valley Brewing Mothman IPA , at Devonshire Arms Cafe and Pub

Quick tasting notes. Brought as an IPA.. but did not mention black ale.. ah ha no.mistaking on first whiff

Pitch walnut black good tan lacing, ARoma hints for cream roast but good easy hop angle with excellent balance. Noticeable bitterness with a creamy bite it seemed mixing in roast pine and some herbality possibly.

Got a can so a good sit down go for another day of it will give it justice and my full attention.

    Cheers!
