Went to the bottle shop looking for Avery, as I read 9 steps to boredom and was intrigued. I have a bottle of Mephistopholis in the cellar and have not cracked yet, the shop had no Avery, so I picked up Siberian night as I really like Wulver. Siberian is very drinkable, heavy chocolate, beautiful black pour. Tasty

I actually just went back and bumped the overall score because overall, I thought it was excellent. Just a small aspect that I didnt care for.

Hello again NBS-ers! As semi-promised, I've returned with yet another new brew on this delightful Sunday! I've spent the last few hours taking a very nice nap...& was apparently not alone...my GF snapped this Sherbie pic while I was out:
Reminds me just slightly of a Giger painting.

Anyhow, I awoke from my nap to discover that my three remaining cans of 4Beans had been consumed by the GF. Her reaction upon my asking her where they'd gone: 'Oh, those were gooood'
...indeed they are. @cjgiant , guess I'll have to wait a bit longer for that formal review :slight_frown::stuck_out_tongue::grinning:

    OK, new brew #2:
Flying Dog Single Hop Imperial IPA (Columbus)

    First, some BA stuff:

    A: 4, S: 3.75, T: 3.75, M: 4, O: 3.75 - BA says: 3.79

    My official review:

    12oz bottle into a tulip.

A: Pours a clear deep-gold/amber with 1" dense white head that recedes at a moderate pace. Retention & lacing are both better-than-average. Nothing too special here, but for some reason I really like the look of this brew.

S: The nose is along the lines of what I might expect for a Columbus single-hop DIPA. It seeps into the nostrils with a dank pungency, fairly herbaceous notes & a slightly citrus-peel undertone. Very mild notes of what I can only describe as 'garlic'. I get a strong black-pepper punch as well, which I'm not sure whether or not I entirely like.

T: Not a huge departure from the nose. It comes on with a blend of bread dough, 'garlic' & a heavy helping of herbs. The mid palate is more distinctly bitter with more citrus peel showing itself. I actually like the counterpoint that the mild citric qualities provide against some of the lead-in flavors. The finish is quite herbal with milder 'garlic' tones & more of the black pepper that I detected on the nose. ABV is masked expertly. While the depth of components & progression of flavor are both reasonably good, I'm not entirely sure that this brew isn't a bit more one-note than what is possible with Columbus hops. I expected more.

M: Perfect moderate carb married to a silky, velvet-soft malt body. The finish borders on being a bit dull, but I'm inclined to call it elegant.

O: This is not the most well-developed FD Single Hop DIPA, but it's a pretty solid effort. It's entirely possible that I may have rated it quite differently on any given day, but today I can't help but nitpick a few percieved flaws. That being said- it's still quite quaffable.

So, not a home-run by any means. I'm still glad to have tried it & certainly wouldn't turn it down if it were offered to me again. I suppose my biggest hiccup (pun not intended) with this brew is that it teases me with the implication of deep flavor, yet it leaves me constantly wanting more. Although contextually, this still ranks pretty highly among most FD brews for me.

Alright - thus concludes my new brew contributions today. Glad to be here & contribute, glad to be reading all of your thoughtful new-beer reviews today as well

Once again wishing you all good beer & good cheer!

My friend gave me a bottle of this stout. I'm not familiar with Stoudt's Brewing Co. of Adamstown, PA, but I was very impressed. This is an excellent stout! Here's my review:

    look: 4 | smell: 4 | taste: 4.25 | feel: 4.25 | overall: 4.25

Poured into snifter. Virtually black with a creamy, milk colored head and attractive lacing especially as it warmed in the glass. The smell is a nice mix of caramel, chocolate, and cherry. When sipped, the first taste is dark fruit, followed by the chocolate, bitter coffee, and dry oatmeal at the finish. This is a medium-bodied stout with a pleasant mouth feel and carbonation. It's nicely chewy. Overall, this is a very good stout. I'd like to taste a little more dark fruit but I'm definitely a fan and will have to learn more about Stout's Brewing Co.

What's happening nbs. Windy as hell here on the island but its been nice getting a break from the humidity. Spent the day at the beach and now I'm settling in for the evening.

My new beer today is yet another from @rgordon and the bif box. Taketake, from Wicked Weed brewing co. I'm not a huge fan of farmhouse ales/saisons but this one looks really hopped out so here goes.

The pour is a lovely orange color. Almost peach like with lots of fluffy white foam. Smell hits with hops, very much like an ipa. I also get some spice notes, and some funk.
A really clean start on the initial sip. The hops really come on strongly and right at the end I get that funky Brett yeast that reminds me of what I'm actually drinking. Spice notes really come on as it warms as well as the fruit. I really get a mango/citrus feel. The yeast does start to catch up the more I drink it. A taste that is a bit off putting for me but it's not over powering.

Overall, a bit of a surprise in that I actually enjoyed it. The hop heads farmhouse ale. I'm around the 4 range all around,

Greetings all! Well I've got the sauce simmering on the range and the ballgame on (Mariners vs. Rangers, Felix Hernandez on the mound, leading 4-2), so I figured it was time to crack open a tasty brew for NBS.

This one comes from our friends down in Paso Robles, managed to grab a couple bottles a week or so ago. Really interesting aroma, fruity and almost citrusy but with some definite alcohol heat. Taste is likewise juicy, a touch acidic, on top of a huge pale malt bill. Oak and vanilla smooth the edges. To be honest, this is really different from any beer I've had, very unique. Almost a triple IPA/barleywine. I'm digging it. Cheers!

Hello, NBS people. I tried Smuttlabs Biere de 'Shire today. Very good (although extra strong) take on the saison style. And with brett!

    4.26/5rDev n/a
    look: 4 | smell: 4.25 | taste: 4.25 | feel: 4.5 | overall: 4.25

First of all, the ABV on this website is off. The bottle says it's 9.1%, and that makes a big difference, although it is well hidden. This saison hits all the right notes. It's funky, yeasty, notes of clove. Delicious, but not quite as refreshing as it would be with a lower ABV. Great beer to have one, not many. If you dig beers with brett, you'll likely enjoy this one. (378 characters)
