Some guys(after the fact) brought up some concerns about "exploding growlers". Simply put I'm taking 3 swing top growlers home in the suitcase. Should I have a problem or was that just a bad batch?

    Thanks!

(Yeah I've searched a bit, can't find any recent issues on it)

@Devman171 had one of his explode a couple weeks back. TH send him a gift card and some glassware, I would assume it is something they are aware of it and pulled those growlers.

Yeah I'm more worried about them exploding, I brought an ample amount of bubble wrap and electrical tape for the swing tops

I would say yes you should be very concerned. I've had 3 explode on me since May with no rhyme or reason as to why. I'd definitely recommend putting each one in a large ziplock bag just in case

I would open then close to release any extra carb, but it seems to be glass defects, could get messy on a plane

That's interesting, every growler I've ever had from them has opened with no hiss or pop. The beer has always been fine (amazing) but I never would have guessed overcarbonation was a problem. Or are we just talking about defective glass?

Edit: just read the post above mine, defective glass. I hope it goes well for you!

They have new 32 oz glass growlers as of like 1-2 months ago. They have both locations printed on the back. The older growlers do not so that's how you can tell the difference. I have not heard reports of the new ones exploding.

Well, they're on the plane. If a flight goes down in the next 3 hours it's from exploding growlers, not bombs haha.

    Hey Shane,
I've actually had 2 of the "new" growlers explode on me already. There's been tons of other reported explosions of the new growlers on one of the Facebook beer groups I follow. The new growlers were just a different batch from the same distributor. Jean all but confirmed to me that he was switching to the thicker style 750mL growlers in the near future

Agreed. Defective glass is one matter, but if anything, my growlers from them have been undercarbed. There's never a hiss, or a pop, and I've had several growlers lose a ton of carb over a 48 hour period. I'm getting to the point where I only want to drink TH from the source, just because I feel like it generally isn't the same quality even a few days later (not to mention how expensive they've gotten.) Amazing, amazing beer though.

Man some people must just have really bad luck or I have good luck. I've never had problems with exploding growlers or growlers going stale after just a few days. I've had stuff sit for as long as two weeks in the fridge and it was still fine when opened.

I really don't get the talk of "how expensive" they've gotten.

Wow - did not know that! I thought those were supposed to 'fix' the exploding issue. Yikes...

I must have just been lucky, I purchased one of the new growlers and have filled it both at Tired Hands and elsewhere without issues. Good to know to be cautious though.

Have owned likely around 20 Tired Hands growlers since they opened and luckily have never had this happen. I like the 750 ml growlers though so would not be disappointed if they made that change.

750 ml growlers would be awesome. 750 mL growlers at current 32 oz. prices, not so much.

I've used and abused my TH growlers, never had one explode. Must have been a specific shipment that was defective, because the glass is a pretty standard type. Unless they were somehow exposed to extreme temperatures.

The last several growlers I've gotten have been way more carbed than their growlers used to be. So I think we can lay the flat growlers talk to rest.

I was there last week and got 2 fills, 1 screw top and 1 flip top. Both flat within 2 days. Overall my luck must be bad there lately. I'd say half the growlers I've brought back within the last 6 months have been flat within 2-4 days.

Maybe you should replace the gasket on your flip tops and invest in (or ask for) a new cap for your screw top. I've gotten 6 or 7 growlers filled there in the past couple of months. None flat. I've only ever had flat growlers there one time, both of the same beer, and emailed them about it. They offered to buy me a fill. Might be worth contacting them about it, especially if it keeps happening. I've had a couple others I thought were flat, too, but it turned out once they got warmer they livened up. It doesn't help that some of their beers are very lowly carbed to begin with.

Because you think they aren't expensive? Or that they've always been like that?

In my book, $20 for 32 oz for growler filled beer is crazy. Considering growler prices per oz should be significantly lower than bottled beer of equal caliber, with 2 of the 3 tiers' markups being eliminated.

I am of the opinion that growlers are best only if consumed that day or maybe the next day. I stopped sending them to friends a long time ago. Even the owner would tell you to not wait more than 48 hours. A lot of people will tell you they ship these things to Pluto and they are fine. I never had that experience with them or Selinsgrove growlers.

I am traveling down to Manayunk this weekend (20 minutes from TH) Does TH only do growler fills or do they also sell bombers/bottles at all?

And would anyone recommend any of their saisons over the rest of the ones they make?

TH only does growler fills, except for bottle releases, which are held about once a month on Sundays. The last bottle release was Para5 on August 9.
