It's funny--there are still some hoppy barleywines that I really like. And Old Ruffian is one of them. Old Horizontal is another. They too have that fight between bitter and sweet going on, but for some reason it works for me better than Bigfoot does.

    ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

its about beers that are generally well liked but do not taste great, or even good in some instances, to you personally.

I don't get black IPA's. At all. Can't do it. Worst taste ever. People told me that it may because while I love stouts, love IPA's, I most likely don't like when those taste profiles are tossed together?

However I did THOROUGHLY enjoy Three Eyed Raven by Ommegang, which was a Dark Saison. Thought that was interesting.

Have you tried Sam Adams "Fat Jack"?? I too have yet to find one that really sticks out, but this one is probably the best one I've had. Still falls short though. Maybe my expectations are too high.

Actually, considering I haven't found a beer to compare the rest to, I guess all pumpkin beers "fall short". Didn't think it through as I typed.

Gulden Draak. What a horrible mess. And I love dark Belgian brews.

While I haven't tried anything else yet from Brouwerij Huyghe (and do plan to), I didn't quite understand Delirium Tremens. I don't know, it just tasted off and unappealing to me. Definitely did not match my expectations for how good I was told it would be.

Bourbon County Stout. I don't "get" that beer. It's way too boozy for me. If I want whisky I'll pour a glass of whisky.

I don't like pumpkin beers - even the highly rated ones. I like other "fruits" in beer, but pumpkin just does nothing for me. If I want me some punkin pie, I'll eat some. Maybe it's the nutmeg or cinnamon most of them have. The closest one I've come to enjoying was from Jack's Abby and it still didn't do much for me.

Heretic Alert - Bissell Brothers Baby Genius and The Substance I just thought were way over-hopped and not significantly different from a dozen (or more) similar beers, so I don't understand the hype. Sampled at the source, and honestly don't understand what all the fuss is about. Glad I had them, don't need to rush out and buy a bunch. Baby Genius was the better of the two, but the better beer vs. those two - at least on my tongue - was Lux.

@Providence I completely agree about the price on MBC beers. And I think their prices have gone up lately. But I have to respectfully disagree about Lunch. I probably got mine the same place you did. I did try Another One recently at the source and I do think it is a better beer but obviously I tasted it super-fresh. I thought Lunch was very good and a nicely balanced beer even in the bottle with a couple weeks on it.

I'm of the mind that a great number of variables that we often don't consider impact our perception of a beer. So ultimately, who knows? Tell you what, when we finally meet face to face, you bring a bottle of Lunch and I'll bring a bottle of, uh, hmmm.....crappy homebrew?

Yes, absolutely. I had it years ago and thought it was a solid beer and then when I saw it being placed at the top of beer lists I was so confused. So many other, bolder, more original options out there. That said, I am definitely meaning to try it again.

Not that this list is the be all and end all of beer lists, but just an example: http://www.homebrewersassociation.org/news/zymurgys-2014-best-beers-america/
