How do you rank Duluth area breweries right now?

Just curious, but why the hate on Fitger's food? I haven't eaten there since spring, but normally love going there for lunch. The fish and chips, and burgers have always been really solid, IMO. Are you guys ordering different stuff, or do we just have different tastes?

That's a good question. I usually eat the fares you mentioned as well and think they are at least solid if not very good.

About a year ago I was there, server said some of the beers were made in house, a small system in the basement, and some was brewer elsewhere. I don't remember which ones but I was impressed with what I had.

Do they still have the banner hanging that reads: "Now Brewing Beer!" :grimacing: So they're like Clyde Iron Works with beers brewed elsewhere (Clyde's are or were brewed by LSBC and house-branded)?

I went to try that place once, and there was a forty five minute wait so I went to Carmody, where the beers were decent.

I've never enjoyed the food at Fitgers. I once ordered a bacon cheeseburger, and the bacon was one of those pre cooked discs like you would get on a gas station burger. It was horrible.

Here's a recent snapshot of the new system:

Their website still says they brew.

I'm ignoring the hyperbole, but they do still claim to brew and advertise it on their website and on facebook.

The last few times I've been there, the fries have changed, and as was mentioned above their brewhouse fries used to be as good of fries as one could find anywhere, IMO. Their wild rice burgers seem to have less flavor than they used to, they changed their burger buns to these dry, stiff multigrain (I normally love multigrain buns) buns that aren't very good, and the last burger I had was severely over-cooked.

Don't get me wrong, I love sitting at the bar and having a pint or two, and I love the atmosphere and nearly everything else about them, but I have been slightly dissappointed with the quality of the food lately.

Also, in talking with Ken from Borealis, it sounds like his output is going to go up 3-4 fold. Great news!

I believe it's up to a 3.5 barrel system now. Psychobrew HERMS setup. Bring on the Berliner Weisse!

Hmm, well that's pretty sad if they no longer have the beer battered fries (at least I think that's what they were).

I will be vacationing near Duluth over Labor day weekend with some family.
Sounds like Fitgers has food and beer, any other good places for food and brews?

Shamrock Bar & Pizza (5825 Tower Ave, Superior) order their pepperoni pizza. You will not regret it (or any of their pizza's). They make the quintessential midwest style pizza.

    1. Bent Paddle (have they brewed anything yet that wasn't spot on?)
    2. Fitgers (get the fish tacos next time)
    <significant gap inserted>
Tie for 5th: Borealis, Canal Park, Castle Danger (would visit CPB more if it wasn't in CP)
    6. Thirsty Pagan (way too many taps with some disastrous experiments. pizza always solid)
    7. Lake Superior (kinda surprised they're still afloat. hardly any taps in town. Bent Paddle has 'em all)
    8. Blacklist (very hit or miss IMHO)
    9. Carmody (nice environs)
    10. Dubh Linn (only if your bike breaks down in front of it- then, order a Guinness)

Yeah. Lollygagger, IMO. It is OK, but it is not anything I would seek out.

If you are in the mood for Fitger's and Fish Tacos go to Burrito Union. They have several Fitger's Taps and the fish tacos were much better, IMHO. This is coming from fish taco connoisseur.

I wholeheartedly disagree. Burrito Union is a great spot with fine Brewhouse beers but their food is horrible (and yes I've had their fish tacos). You can get a much better one at Blackwoods.
