On the pumpkin ale spectrum, do you prefer pumpkin-pie or pumpkin-squash flavor?

Your examples are welcome and encouraged.

    I'll start:
    -Pumpkin Pie: Harpoon UFO Pumpkin
    -Pumpkin Squash: Smuttynose Pumpkin Ale

Have you ever eaten a piece of pumpkin?

Not a lot of flavor actually.....

Pumpkin (or squash in general) does not really add a lot of flavor to a beer.....it adds some fermentable sugars and mouthfeel....but not a lot of flavor overall

Anyway, I tend to like all kinds of pumpkin beers.....there are not that many "pumpkin flavored" ones really; I also like the Smuttynose version, but not because of any perceived pumpkin flavor per se, just like the balance of the beer, and not too sweet or spicy compared to others.

Both. There's something to be said about breweries that go through great lengths to put real pumpkin in their beer when they know most people associate "pumpkin" with the traditional pumpkin pie spices. Additional kudos to breweries that find the right balance of spices.

The spices are what make a pumpkin beer. I get pie spices and graham crackers with Pumking; I'm sure the pumpkin is in there somewhere, but that's not what jumps out at you.

I think both varieties can be very good. I've noticed that many of the pumpkin pie beers have gone to just an overwhelming nutmeg or cinnamon flavor. Rogue seems to make a nice pumpkin patch beer taste of fresh pumpkin without the overwhelming sweetness.
Punkin Ale is the one that I can drink several of in a sitting without tiring of the taste.

I tend to favor the examples that trend more towards the pumpkin-pie spice flavor

Smuttynose is really the only pumpkin beer I can enjoy more than one of.

The flavor isn't pumpkin, it's cinammon, sugar, nutmeg, etc...

At the risk of bringing out the Anti-Pumking army, I think Pumking nails a graham cracker finishing note that no other beer does. I for one, love it.

I'm generally not a fan but i'll probably have 1-2 pumpkings when it cools off. I do however dig timmermans pumpkin lambicus.

Like @BeerVikingSailor said, Pumpkin adds minimal flavour. Pumpkin Pie spices are what make an excellent Pumpkin beer, just as long as it doesn't turn out overly sweet.

Saucony Creek Maple Mistress I really liked last year, and that is straight up butternut squash. But I'm also into the pumpkin/pumpkin-puree beers. So both for me.

I love both and look forward to trying them all, only down side is when I'm in the mood for one type and the single I picked up is the other....overall the Pumpkin Pie Spice is good most times.

I've said before that I really like Alewerks Pumpkin Ale. It's not a spice bomb, but rather the flavor of toasted pumpkin seeds shines through with that delicious malt. It has kind of turned me off the pumpkin pie spiced beers.

Simply not true. I doubt you've ever had a real, well done, pumpkin mash beer. Any brewer can add spices to make the typical and vinordinaire pumpkin pie flavored beer. It's bullshit. The skill and craftsmanship comes from the ability to combine the earthy mash with a minimal and restrained use of spices.
