I always send extras, usually two or more bottles, but sometimes only one, or sometimes many. I have gotten extras in over 90% of the trades I have made, they vary from one bottle to as many as six bottles. Extras are just that, extra, and if I don't receive it is no big deal, but I admit sometimes I have been stupidly outdone with extras in a trade, and in other trades I have sent a few good'uns and received none.

Now that we can poll, I thought this oft-covered topic might be ripe for polling.

What are your experiences and thoughts?

I only didn't send an extra on my first two trades, but since then I've always included some. The number varies greatly, based on what I have at home/readily available and the size and scope of the trade

As far as I remember, the only time I didn't send extras was when I was sending 12 agreed-upon bottles in a 12-bottle shipper, and we explicitly increased the size of the trade to fill the shipper.

I always send extras though how many largely depends on who I send to and the trade that was worked out. If it is one of my regular trading partners in a neighboring state which happens to share a lot of distribution I throw in what I can but is may be minimal due to options. Someone outside of the distribution of my locals with a lot of wants I can hit is in for a fair number of extras. If I am sending a rather large box I will send what extras I can but am not going overboard due to safety and financial concerns. If I am trading just a sixer I have often included 6+ extras to make the box worth shipping.

    Hmm..
All varies really. Depending on rapport with the person, depending on the wants I can hit, depending on size of the original trade. Always generally more than 2 though. I just sent a 6 pk shipper and I included 4 extas. Was only a trade for 1 beer and a glass. Seems fair to me. Sent 2 22oz, 1 16oz can and a 12oz IPA, not in his distro area.

    Cheers!

The more the merrier. I throw in at least 3 bottles for most of my trades, but if it's a regular trading partner then I'll throw in all kinds of crap.

I do not trade much, but when I do it is an event for me.

I like to send a box that the receiver is really happy with when the open it. Since my cellar is as deep as a rain puddle that means a bunch of extras.

Not that is should be a contest, but I like to send better than I get. Otherwise I get pissed off and some of you have really pissed me off in a past life:wink:.

I didn't include extras on my first trade (but shipped them ten months after). Since then, I have always included a couple. Regular partners seem to get borderline ridiculous with the extras we end up including (I always shoot for wants in the extras with them).

if it's a small trade i might send 1~2 extras, but usually more.

i'm not sure what i'd do if i was trading lots of main trade bottles... but it's also unlikely that i'd do that, since most of my trades are built around 1 particular beer on 1 side of the trade.

at the moment, most of my trades are like, "i'll send an X and some other stuff, you send some stuff," so the idea of something being 'extra' is a bit of a stretch anyway.

I do international trades, so it is usually agreed to not send extras. If shipping cost was not an issue however, I would always through in a few nice extras!

The amount of extras I send depends on the person I'm trading with and the box I have on hand to ship in. I don't like to pay to ship air so I pack it full of beer. Also I don't always have access to heavily sought after beers so I try to kill them with quantity.

I definitely average more than two extras. I even throw in one or two when we agree to no extras (this means you Foster). The only trade I can remember not including an extra was an in-person with cadaugherty. I rushed out of the house without grabbing something, and I regretted it because, not only did he hook me up on the trade, he remembered to bring an extra.

I couldn't find it, so perhaps you could put a link into this thread so we could compare that poll with this one. It might be fun to see the different results with time factored in. Thanks.

Haha yeah I guess it is "that time of the month" again:wink:

I probably average 3-4 extras per trade. I always include 1-2 solid locals and then try to hit wants as best as possible. In a recent trade I was able to add 4 wants with little effort, so they went in the box. If everything doesn't fit in the box, I grab a bigger box...

Not a frequent trader, but I try to include local stuff from small breweries that the trader would probably never otherwise get, and I'll take a look at wants and either include one of those or something that I think they'd want based on those
