    New American Pale Ale Sunday.

It's breezy, kinda cool, and cloudy here at the Jersey Shore today...and I 'm recovering from a weeklong battle with a nasty cold so I chose a light, bright beer: http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/39297/177202/?ba=NiceTaps

The review and the label speak for themselves.
I hope the post turns out ok, it's been since early July since I lasted visited here. And I don't do much social media otherwise.
Anyway, I'm glad to have found an open seat at the virtual bar and thanks for having me.

Greetings, everyone, and a pleasant NBS (and Sunday in general) wherever you may be. It's been awfully dreadful in ATL for the last few days, so how about a local barrel-aged stout to cut through the dreary weather? Today, I offer Departed Spirit, a barrel aged version of Theophan the Recluse from Three Taverns in ATL.

Decanted in a single pour into a DFH Perfect Glass, Teku, snifter, and (shown here for kicks) my Three Taverns tasting glass from their second anniversary. No date, released in May 2015 and cellared since that time. So, consumed 4-5 months since bottling.

Appearance is dark brown verging on pitch black, with very little light penetrating at the edges. A tight, pillowy beige head that settles into a collar of lace (but remaining on the DFH glass thanks to its nucleation points).

Aroma of oak predominates on first sniff--a blast of wood and booze, in equal measures, hits the nostrils. Vanilla and dark stone fruit follows. As the beer warms, bready malts make themselves apparent. Yet oak drives the aroma.

Taste is sweeter and more complex than the aroma would suggest. Fruity flavors of black currant and juicy raspberry lead the way before notes of oak take over and produce a drying finish. Despite bready malts in the aroma, roasted malts are more apparent in the taste. Some notes of vanilla, too. Yes, it goes without saying that the beer is boozy, but oak and not fresh bourbon is more prominent to me. Given the wood and fruit notes, I'd say this beer was aged in red wine barrels if I didn't know better.

Mouthfeel is a bit thick but not quite oily, and carbonation is tingling and verging on sharp. In line with the taste, there is a bone-dry finish.

In sum, Georgia has been producing some great BA stouts lately. And while I'm not quite convinced that Departed Spirit belongs in same league as Creature Comforts See the Stars and Orpheus The 12th Labor, it's not far behind, either. More important than that is how this barrel aging counterbalances some of the sugary, fruity excesses of Theophan, which is a Belgian style take on the RIS. It's presents a refreshing perspective on that fine beer. A great showing from one of my favorite breweries.

If I had score this one, I'd say 4.25.

Good evening NBS, off the a late start with my first new beer of the today; grabbed a few beers during the Eagles game with some coworkers. Had some good beer but nothing as good as what I'm drink now. Have to give a big thanks to @brentk56 for the great Wicked Weed box, drinking Black Angel right now.

    Thank you brentk56 for this
500 ml bottle poured into a flute

A- Black with a three finger light mocha head.

S- Sour cherries, bourbon, oak, roasted coffee, faint chocolate, some funk. Think sour stout with cherries.

T- Great complexity, sour cherries, roasted malts, hints of chocolate, some bourbon/oak, hint of vanilla.

    M- Smooth, medium body.

O- A well made sour, great complexity. Easy drinking, tasty beer, cherries are great. Worth seeking out, just enough stout character.

Good Evening all NBSers. Busy work day and lots of things that still need to be done around here to get ready for the new season. Thanks as always a great way to start aNBS with @cavedave commentary to set things straight and serve as a reminder as to what we are all about here on Sunday. Hey yesterday was pool closing day and next Saturday is cordwood stacking day. Gotta love fall.

And we have a beer I actually tried during the week but didn't sit down to properly give it a look:

Long Trail SMaSH Project Ale ( can is simply labeled ale- no style)

The look is hazy golden in color with a nice fluffy white head that hangs a bit and leaves plenty of wonderful " Queen Anne's" lacing.

This beer has a nice aroma. Very fragrant tangerine, orange, pineapple, passion fruit, peach, orange blossom its all surrounded by a biscuity sweet bready malt. Fruit "fleshy" is what comes to mind.

Yum- this is a little different for sure. It follows with tropical fruit, citrus and then the Pilsner mlts wraps round all this juiciness. A little candy sweetness. Just Bitter enough. Some nice balance. No off flavors - crisp and clean. I'm trying to define this in my mind to style. Wondering if it was labeled an IPL would I fall into just believing that? Of course it's labeled an Ale......so its not. Whatever you call it - its tasty.

Mouth is crisp, dry. Flavors linger. Carb is medium to low. Body- and this is where it kind of leans toward a style. It has a medium body. Definitely thicker than a Pils or IPL. I liked that.

The beer was enjoyable to me. I'll go out on limb here (ahem) and say its the BEST beer I've had from LT. Which I haven't had alot of. It's a tad pricey at 11 plus a sixer but worth a try IMO. I'd like to hear from some other BAs as to what style it comes closest too. It's a quality brew though regardless. And a little different . Aroma is still getting to me. Very fine smelling brew. Kudos to LT.

And for NOVS of course what else but the track "Walking on the Moon " from Regatta De Blanc.
Happy Blood moon don't forget to take a look. Have a great week and as always- Thanks for listening![IMG] [IMG]

What's up NBS players. A pretty cool fall day here on the island and it might be the last weekend I get to wear shorts. Spent the day mindlessly watching football. Jets almost came back but still looked pretty flat and beaten up.

My new beer today is Wet Hop Co-Op, a session ipa, from Long Ireland Brewing co. Yearly wet hopped release which uses hops grown at local hop farms. Always cool in concept but the beer usually doesn't deliver. Lets see how this years goes.

The pour is lightly orange with decent clarity. A nose that is slightly floral with citrus and pine. Initial taste is light and crisp with a decent hop presence. The malt presence is pretty evident and yields a rather earthy finish. Slight bitter tones but overall pretty smooth drinking. Tangy citrus notes come on the more I drink it. Mouth feel is pretty good and not watery or too light at all.

Overall, decent and better than I had expected. I wish it had a little less malt presence and more emphasis on the local hops which the beer is suppose to showcase. Still a pretty average drinking session ipa. I'm in the 3/3.5 range,

Took the wife for our normal weekend Cracker Barrel visit, and enjoying some Black Keys from Austin City Limits via Roku. They opened with "Your Touch" which is one of my favorites.

This new beer is Stone's Vertical Epic 08.08.08. A Belgian IPA that they brought back for the 20th anniversary. A lot going on here. Some familiar banana and clove from the yeast strains and quite a bit more peppery spice and earthiness than I was expecting. In some ways, it's like an IPA, a Tripel, and a saison got together.

Very unique and enjoyable. Glad I got a chance to try it.

On a side note, I'm digging the crowlers. Only cost me $1 over the cost of the beer, which is nice in a spot where I didn't have my empty glass growler. Also, seems to travel easier. The only downsides is no way to reseal or reuse.

Hoping there is a great new beer in your glass!

First off, the head retention was fantastic. Crystal clear, transparent brew.

The aroma was right off the bat in your face. Mostly citrus hops (grapefruit juice and peel). Lovely and fresh.

Flavor basically followed. There was a nice, balanced kiss of sweet pale malt, against a very fresh hoppy presence of grapefruit juice and peel, along with a touch of grassy, resinous pine.

Really lovely beer; glad I got to try this one out.

New American Gose Sunday (week 553)

Good evening fellow NBS'ers from finally back on the ridge in Mid Hud Val, NY. Beautiful weather did little to ease the hardship of a killer day of recycling. Low metal prices on the commodities market led to a crazy amount of steel, brass, and aluminum donations, and a crazy amount of extra toil for yours truly this morning at work. I did twelve hours of work in four hours, and my body feels it. Spent the afternoon first at Rushing Duck Brewery sampling their new Pay to Play, then at South Mountain Brewing sharing a growler of RD Divided By Zero with @doomXsaloon, paired perfectly with a Ramon Bueso Genesis. Ending this marathon of a day with Super Symmetry in my Benmarl wine glass is just what the doctor ordered, though, and I am feeling just about perfect now. If you see this one, grab it, it is hands down the second finest Gose I have tried.

Hope you also have a Great American Beer in your glass. Cheers!

Jackie O's Pub & Brewery - Oro Negro

Been wanting to try this one since it came out, finally got a bottle and I didn't wait long to crack it open. Pours dark like motor oil, off white ring of head around the outside the glass that never spreads but sticks around. Smell is roasted malts, slightly sweet, nutty, and earthy....I could inhale this beer all day. Taste is super dark, slightly sweet but in a good way that works well with the nutty earthiness that also comes through on the flavor, various spices mix in the background but are hard to pick out. Mouthfeel is slightly thick and oil, coats the inside of your mouth.

Overall another great adjunct stout from Jackie O's, have loved most everything of theirs I've gotten a chance to try and can't wait to get some more!

    Cheers!

New Vienna Lager Sunday: Sierra Nevada Fall Variety pack Vienna Lager.

Evenin NBSers, with special greetings to all the seekers of various Vienna Lagers.

Today has been an odd mix. The weather was cloudy and breezy with slight coolness in the air, but it was hard to pay attention to chores from the "Honey Do" list. Between the TV coverage of the various activites taking place during the visit by Pope Francis and the Eagles finally winning their third game of the season a fair amount of time was spent indoors with the wife channel surfing/changing channels on the TV. While we are not Catholics it was definitely interesting to hear some of the speeches and even more to see some of the transformations in the downtown areas of Philly that were made both to provide some security while still allowing many people to participate in the 4 pm Papal Mass. They even made provisions for thousands and thousand of audience members to take their communion, even when they weren't even close enough for a direct view of either the altar or one of the huge viewing screens erected on the Parkway. There must have been close to a thousand priests participating.

This evening's new beer is the Sierra Nevada Lager which was my 2nd new beer from the fall Variety pack. This is an excellent example of the style with the bready malt and the floral spicy hops playing well together and sharing the stage and being backed up by just a touch of bitterness.

As usual my review (subject to revision until I finish the beer) is found here:

    http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/140/50671/?ba=drtth

During one quiet period of the day I was reflecting a bit on the up coming fall season which is going to bring us some nice Harvest Ales and so I sent email to my favorite beer guy who will do his best and even go out of his way to get me a case of any beer sold in PA. Hopefully by this time next month I'll have more than a few bottles finished off from a case of the Victory Harvest Ale, a really nice APA with all the flavors one could expect in a Harvest Ale.

Also, while reflecting on the fast approaching autumn season I fit in a bit of time to do a Haiku. (A hobby long unpracticed.)

While there are very few rules governing the writing of Haiku beyond the 5/7/5 structure, there are some fundamental features that should nonetheless be observed. A title should be neither expected nor needed. The focus should be a season of the year and no human should be present since the imagery is to be about the world. Punctuation is whatever works.

    Barley grown, malted.

    Water heated, sugars, yeast,

    Time, hops fresh from bine.

    Cheers, all!

Good evening NBS followers I'm back for my 3rd post today. But sadly it doesn't include any pictures of the fantastic stuff that came out of the smoker this afternoon. Just not enough time to get everything severed and still get pictures. Sorry!
Well on to my 3rd new beer for today. It is Doris the destroyer from Hoppin' Frog.

This great double Imperial stout pours a dark black color as which it should. The nose carries a deep roasted malt overtone with no hints of anything added to this wonderful beer. The taste is of deep dark roasted malts with the smooth finish only a great brew brings to the glass. IMO this is a world class Stout that brings the best in this style forward.

    Good evening BA....

To start im not a fan of Belgian anything, but this was an excellent experience that i will now seek out.

What the butler saw by forgotten boardwalk, cherry hill, NJ. Beer is named after an old penny peep show they used to have on boardwalks in the 30s. (Says so on side of the can)

    1. The head fades quickly with just a slight ring of lace around it.
    2. The smell is simply estery, slight alcohol, clove, yeast
    3. Heres where im sold.....the taste starts of with a sweet candy like yeast, followed by an effervescent tartness with a perfect balance of the slighty bready malt behind it. Dryish finish. Ready for another.
Super drinkable. Id recommend this to anybody that is a fan of belgians and sours, although not puckering, the lemony tartness is mild to medium but combined with everything is great and i am now a fan. Cheers.

A perfect example of, if you dont like a style, don't let it stop you from trying a new beer every now and then because although i wasnt a fan, i am now and have found my favorite wit.

On to the 3rd New beer of the day. Ate an insane amount of food needed somthing "light" lol
Figured I'd try crooked staves st bretta gold nugget mandarin.
    Apparently it's a witbier?
Cap hissed off and instantly mandarin Orange smell crept out....
Poured a nice head that stuck around
Smell was oranges (surprise I know) slight funk some bubblegum soap ...
Tastes is immediately tart kinda like rotten oranges or some citrus fruit...ends dry with a taste that reminds me of smarties lol enjoyable actually...
Has a really nice crispy light juice like feel also.
Overall it's very enjoyable "crushable" I guess you could say. Wish it had more brett character tho
Not sure I'd buy again to expensive for somthing that doesn't blow me away...as always am glad I tried it.

I am kinda used to changing gose up, as my friend Derek (homebrew buddy, now brewmaster at Kent Falls Brewery)has been experimenting with hopping gose, funking it up a bit, and adding complimentary fruit additions, for some years now. This one is a little different because it has a prominent, but perfect, amount of salt, but is equally super delicious.
