Just to complete the posting trifecta of this picture. Cracked open a Deschutes The Abyss for the online tasting. This is a nice beer. Of all the barrels that they used in this beer, I seem to pick up the red wine barrels the most. The licorice is also quite prominent. I'm glad I have the other half of this bomber left to enjoy.

    New Imperial Stout

What a weekend?!?!?! The high hit in the low 60's with barely a cloud in the blue sky.

After the annual fall trail race yesterday, today was quite productive. I was presented with the beauties below for a few hours of helping a good friend's family move this morning. At home it was fall cleanup in the yard, taking advantage of the weather to string some Christmas lights, and wrapping up part of a bathroom redo. Now it's time to relax with a fantastic brew.

Left Hand Bittersweet Imperial Coffee Milk Stout

The name reminds me of the local ski/snowboard hill in college.

22oz. Bottle from Smitty for helping him move (best by date is all rubbed off), Stone IRS snifter.

A- A normal pour creates 1 finger of brown head that drops to a light lace. The body is the darkest brown, but appears near jet black. Dark brown and red at the edges and apparent during the pour. Really good stick left on the glass.

S- Lots of sweetened coffee up front, medium dark roast with a couple of sugar packets, light on the creamer. Lighter notes of chocolate and vanilla.

T- Much as the aroma suggests. Strong coffee flavor mixes with a sugary sweetness. The finish is a bit on the sweet side with hints of semi-sweet chocolate. Alcohol is well hidden.

M- Full bodied, very viscous. Carbonation is lighter, making for a creamy feel. A soft, alcohol warmth.

O- A great evening sipper. Rich and bold in flavor. I almost purchased this bottle at my local, and was happy it was gifted to me for a few hours help moving a buddy. My wife has recently discovered the joy of imperial stouts, and appreciated me splitting the bottle. I would definitely buy this one again.

    New Canned Porter Sunday!

Work day was fun, chilly and Satisfying....

Enough Jibber Jabber time for the New Brew!

As you can see I can't refuse a Donut on a Label...I like Donuts. The brew pours Dark Brown and Opaque with a Black like Quality chilling in the Glass. Nice firm Off-White head Crowns this brew with Majesty. She's a nice looking beer!

The aroma should tell me where this Date is going to go.. First smacks your nostrils with that Toasted Grain aroma bringing forth a backlash of Cocoa powder. A touch of sweetness grabs a hold like that of Crushed Honey Graham Crackers. Very nice smelling Beer.

So far she's a Talker, let's get a feel for this girl! The flavor brings forth that Cocoa Powder dryness with a touch of Honey Graham sweetness. A dash of mineral water and toasted cereal grains. Slight bitterness finishes this with a powdery dryness. It's clean and enjoyable with some Cocoa in the aftertaste. The feel is Light with an eerie smoothness in the body. Carbonation slightly harsh and Jolt Cola esque.

Overall: This isn't a bad beer. It isn't a Robust Porter that is bringing a rich array of flavors, yet it's an easy drinker. I would drink this again. It's both satisfying and thirst quenching. I wanted this beer to be more Chocolate forward...I love Chocolate in beer. Yet it isn't grabbing that Chocolate Tit. This brew is Worthy!

    Grade: B

Cheers My fellow New Beer Sunday Crew!

Hello All. It has been a while since I posted here for NBS. Today I was inspired by finding this glass in a gift pack, and felt the best way to christen my new glassware would be to open up the bottle of Three Philosophers that I have been keeping patiently in my fridge. The bottle is from 2014 so has a nice year or so at least on it.

The Quad style is not one I am not massively familiar with. I've been keen to delve in so here goes. Three Philosophers pours a deep brown-amber mix with a light redness in there, looks like it should hold a mosquito being used for dna samples in a Jurassic Park franchise movie. It is a seriously fine looking beer. The aroma has a waft of sherry in there. Carbonation is fast and bulbous, tight also. Enjoying the cherry and fig notes that come through as this beer warms. English bonfire toffee and an element of clove come through. The complexity is outstanding, each sip opening something new up, much like listening to one of your favorite Kraftwerk albums on vinyl. The high ABV does not so much give you a burn as much as a warming sense. I wish I had a fireplace to enjoy this next to but to be honest I would drink this anywhere. Top notch.

Hope everyone is having a great Sunday and enjoying their beer choices.

It's been a while for me on NBS, but decided to start getting into local brews since I am new here and saving 'em for NBS.
Also trying a new camera since my iphone camera suddenly has become blurry and grainy at the same time.
    Soooo, here is:

    New Baltic Porter Sunday
God of Thunder Baltic Porter 9% ABV
Tenaya Creek Brewery, Las Vegas, NV

Pours a nice nice caramel-like dark brown, almost like coca-cola with a cream, thin head. Nose, a nice roast malt scent with a bit vanilla, a bit smokey. First sip, a very nice coffee and chocolate flavors with a tinge of vanilla and a dark fruits. The feel is nice carbonation, with that bitter coffee fade on the tounge and pleasant warmth from the 9% ABV. Overall, a little bit on the thin side, but overall a well-balanced, enjoyable beer. I will most likely visit the source and get more!

Cheers NBS'ers, nice to be back!

Picked this up today cans dated 11/05/15 so nice and fresh. poured a light slightly hazy yellowish orange color. Lots of great aroma in the nose from the galaxy hops. The taste is great considering the low ABV of this beer. Nice Mouth feel . This is another wonderful beer from Lost Nation.

L-The beer is a deep black with a 1 inch mocha head. Lacing is excellent. The head recedes to a decent ring.
S-Smell is primarily sweet chocolate and alcohol
T- Taste is very much the same as the nose. Chocolaty, but neither too bitter or too sweet that finishes with a warming alcohol burn. As prevalent as the alcohol is, I don't find it off putting.
F- Thick and smooth. Low carb with a full mouthfeel. Maybe the best mouthfeel for a stout that I've had.
O- A really good stout with a high ABV. Not overly complex. I don't get pecans from this although the chocolate and alcohol may be overwhelming them a bit. This stout was very similar in character to the Barrel aged 17 Old Rasputin although the barrel character was higher in that one.

Since the brown ale spectrum is pretty broad it definitely fits. Of note though is a surprisingly creamy and long lasting head and a finish that has a minty almost numbing nuance.

Very reddish amber color beer with an off white head that leaves a little lacing. Smells like an apple pie. Apple, brown sugar, cinnamon and yeasty pie crust. Taste is sickly sweet apple pie in a glass. The cider is tasty but sweet and overpowers the taste of the brown ale hiding underneath. I like the concept but not really the execution.

Greetings, NBSers, tonight's offering for your review is from one of the iconic brewers in our little corner of the beer and beverage world.

Despite the antipathy Goose generates at times for "selling out," they will always occupy a special place in my beer nerd heart because they're the first "craft brewery" I ever visited, in the fall of 1988. I was a pup in my job and industry, and my boss (who happens to be my wife now, and still my boss - but that's another story) sent me off to a customer show in Chicago. Whilst reveling in my "young man on the road with nothing to tie him down" freedom, the head buyer for the customer asked me to accompany him and a couple of his co-workers to "a new place in the neighborhood."

Which turned out to be Goose. And a beer nerd (even though he didn't know it) was born. I remember trying to order a Bud - nope. Or a Miller Lite - nope. "We're brewing these cool beers, you've gotta try one." So I did. I don't remember which one it was, but I remember enjoying it (a few times that night), and now 27 years and 1,500 or so different beers later, here we are.

So when Goose brews something, I usually try it, out of a sense of loyalty if nothing else, an attribute that can be an albatross at times in our beer nerdery, but one I'll gladly wear. I still Love The Goose.

As for this specific beer, it pours a gorgeous golden copper, with a couple of fingers of tan head. On the nose, there are HUUUUUUUGE toffee notes, and some fruit (maybe that's the apricot the bottle references). The taste is malty sweet goodness, with the toffee leading the sweetness charge. Simply outstanding. I'm a big fan of the Marzen style, and this is an excellent example of that style. Rated 3.94 here:

Beautiful fall weekend in these parts, so I've been busy catching up on chores outside, but saved some time after dinner for a new beer.

Today's selection is Doppel Sticky from Lagunitas. Listed as an altbier in the database which is a style I'm not very familiar with...

Aroma and flavor wise, this is a straight up juicy IPA. Lots of citrus with a very light malt presence. Judging just based on flavors and aroma this is an excellent beer. Based on style, I think this misses the mark...

Am I breaking the rules if I do another new beer? My beloved Denver Broncos played a horrible game and I needed another beer. This one did the trick.

It might be my imagination but those Romano beans seem to have a noticeable impact on this brew. It also has kind of a strange but hard to identify taste to it, although never unpleasant.

    Rating: 4.12 rDev -0.7%

L: Pours like a porter, dark brown but semi-transparent. Good clarity. 1 finger of tan head settles to fine bubbles that linger.
S: Kind of a unique smell, I am getting vanilla bean, chocolate, booze, and some dried fruit on the nose. Smells like a baltic porter.
T: Starts of sweet, boozy dried fruit and chocolate, flashes some coffee grounds, and then back to boozy orange and chocolate. Lingering slight bitterness almost like orange peel. There is a lot going on here.
F: Feels silky smooth on the palate, slightly oily almost, but medium bodied. Feels a little heavier than the appearance dictates.
O: Another interesting beer. It tastes really good, and it's very easy to drink. It offers a complex drinking experience that really expands what a baltic porter could be. It's also a little unique in the coffee/chocolate world, I can think of nothing that is exactly like it.

Too bad I don't have the app to upload photos.

    Today's lineup:

Russian River Blind Pig (Not new)

Old Hickory Omega Point (chocolate covered raisins soaked in hints of bourbon) New

Mammoth Brewing Elderberry Sour (New) light and somewhat watery but effervescent and good fruit and funk.

Icing on the cake right now is a 2013 SN Bigfoot. Near the 3 year mark and this is as perfect as a American Barleywine, or beer for that matter gets. 5 out of 5. Patience pays off. Totally new beast.

    Cheers!

Hello NBS! Was a busy Sunday here in N Boston, meaning was at work all day. But, no worries, it seemed most people didn't want to visit the E.D. until mid third quarter of the Patriots game. For me, that meant I could watch the Vikings game and be happy my real home town guys are doing pretty good. Home, and waiting for some baked chicken with the Wife. Meanwhile, I've been reading NBS today and saw some great reviews for this beer already. However....I got the last bottle at my local beer store and knew the Beer Gods wanted me to drink it!
    Stone's Double Bastard Depth Charged!!
Coffee in beer always makes me happy, and when they say Espresso, they mean it! Great addition to the base beer, and will go nicely with dinner. Splitting this with my wife, at 11%, this will be drunk slowly.

Greetings fellow NBSers! A cloudy day here in the Fourth Corner, and with the Seacows playing a late game, I find myself in the only brewery in town not showing the game (Thank You Kulshan!), and they have functionable wifi so I'm able to make a long missed NBS entry.

With the recent rainstorms we've had, our drought is now over, and some snowpack is being built in the Cascades to get us through next summer. That snowpack will soon enough having the local enjoyers of the sliding sports Go East to Mt. Baker to enjoy the white shit. Coincidentally enough, my NBS entry from Kulshan is named Go East: http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/28281/199699/

Looks like there's a brown ale on the board I haven't had before, so I might be back in a bit.
