Got to agree - bought a case in 2011. It sucked then but it's just been getting better and better!

    Happy New Year, NBS!

My new beer for today is Praga Premium Pils. This is a Czech-style pilsner at 4.7 ABV. Pours a beautiful clear straw-yellow into a beer glass from a green 11.2 oz bottle. A little concerned about skunkiness from that green bottle, but happily this beer came through unscathed.

Smells and tastes light, crisp and lovely. A little sweet, bready maltiness closed off at the end with a crisp bite of hops. I haven't had many Czech pilsners, so I'm hardly an expert, but this a delicate and delicious, easy-drinking beer. Just what the doctor ordered to help the palate recover from a holiday season full of big BA stouts and double IPAs. Oh, and I respectfully feel this beer (and dare I say most pilsners?) is a tad underrated by the reviews on this site. Perhaps many reviewers weren't as lucky as I was with that green bottle?

    Cheers!

I started out with a sour and now I'm moving in the opposite direction. My second NBS offering is a beer that many will
    find too sweet to enjoy.

I am a fan of strong ales and was looking forward to this beer. I also love maple and am pleasantly surprised when I find it in a beer.

    Sugaree Maple Bourbon Pecan Pie

    High Water Brewing

    look: 4 | smell: 4.25 | taste: 3.75 | feel: 3.75 | overall: 3.75

L- A deep burnt caramel pour leads to a 3/4 inch off white head. Lacing ins excellent and persistent.
S-The first and only thing is a massive maple sweetness. This is the first beer I've had where it literally smells sweet.
T-Well the nose is an accurate predictor here. This beer is sweet. It is almost overwhelming. I like maple, but I can't pick out anything else other than a mild alcohol burn.
F- The carbonation is low and the beer coats the tongue which only enhances the sugary sweetness found in the beer.
O- I rather liked this beer when I first started drinking it. However the further I got into the bomber the harder it became to finish. It is a beer that delivers on what it promises, but is better taken in small doses and shared.

Update: I had to drain pour the last half of the bomber. I couldn't do it. It's just too overwhelming sweet to finish by myself.

Ras "Soft Citra IPA" adds both oat and wheat malts for a super-soft body to carry dat citrusy magic...

Shilkmake is an IPA collab between Tired Hands and Omnipollo - in addition to wheat and oat malts, it features the addition of vanilla bean and strawberry... I wasn't too fond of the strawberry - but that's just me - had a tartness I didn't really want (or expect) in the IPA - the vanilla was very subtle, lost in the berry initially, but as the beer warmed it became more appreciable.

    Cheers, NBS!

First new beer of the new year is a... Dopplebock!

Nice and malty with chocolate, caramel, brown bread and dark fruit. Chocolaty and bready with the roasted malts. Some dark fruits and molasses to go along with toffee, caramel. Medium and sticky with a good amount of carbonation. This is a delicious dopplebock!

First NBS of the day, an O'Dell Lugene Chocolate Milk Stout, 8.5% ABV, 18 IBU. Pours moderate (not thick, not thin), opaque, almost no head, smells chocolate. Taste is chocolate, smooth, not bitter, a bit sweet. Mouthfeel is short of chewy. I found a new one for my favorites list. The assistant is Mia, a purebred Bengal XL that is 7mo old. She is about the size of a normal adult cat now and will get about 50% larger. Bengals are part wildcat and love water since their ancestor wildcats fished - they will jump into a tub/shower, play in the toilet, etc. If I had left her to it, my beer would have been all over her in a few seconds. Mia is polydactyl with 22 toes vs the normal 18.

Bengals are very beautiful cats, indeed! We fostered one a few years ago, until we couldn't keep her any more. She just didn't get along with the other animals, mainly because the breeder was a mess and the family before us kept her segregated from other cats they had in the house. After she attacked me and left my right arm a bloody mess....it was time to give her to someone that could care for her better than us.

First Christ Squire and then Lemmy. 2015 was a bad year for bass players that were both innovative and absolute, big as life characters. Rock is the poorer for losing them.

Happy New Year NBS! It is sunny and pleasant for N of Boston today. A touch of PTSD is hitting me as this is exactly how we started last year, and a 100+ inches of snow later...Anyways, enjoying the Football today as I am fighting for third place in my Fantasy Football team. Personally, am waiting for the Vikings to come on tonight as that is my home state, and home team. Can't wait to see them play Green Bay, outside, at night, in January!
So..today I am drinking Peppermint Victory at Sea, or as the cool BA's say, VAS. I was planning to have this on NYE, but we had a 'situation' at work and I got home late. I love the base beer, a six pack is usually in my fridge during the winter. I liked this flavor addition, although will admit I was worried it would be a toothpaste/coffee taste I might not get around. The smell made me think that, but thankfully the first few sips showed just hints of the peppermint with most of the base just shining through. As I continued sipping the bomber (bad format IMO) the peppermint became more prevalent which wasn't so enjoyable.
Overall, made me realize how much I like regular VAS, and I would have this again just maybe a half pour next time.
    Enjoy the Sunday NBS!!

Good afternoon to all the NBS followers and thanks to @JMS1512 for getting us started off on the right foot in this first NBS of 2016. The weather is finally getting a little closer to normal here in NH but my trek north yesterday showed very little ice formed at the Flume Gorge so it looks like there will be very little ice climbing this winter. On the return trip yesterday I circumnavigated thru VT to stop and pick up a few beers. One of them being my new beer for today which is from Stone Brewing Xocoveza - Charred.

Poured a black color into my tulip glass. The nose is inviting with some hints of the aging in the nose and also the spice from the base beer. The nose is where this beer ends there is no barrel aging taste to this beer but there is this harsh charred taste( perhaps Mexican Chocolate) so at least they have the name correct. The mouth feel is thin even for a barrel aged beer. For the 18.99 for 500ml I won't be buying another. But since I actually bought 2 yesterday I'll let the other age for awhile. I'm thinking my judgement may be harsh but just can't bring myself to pop the 2nd bottle today to see if it matches the first.

pours fine clear orange, no heaqd. Slight top haze. 3/5

tequila is prominent, malt sweetness is there.some fruit in background 3/5

tequila is upfront, works with spices and malt for a merange like flavor, a little sharp.
    some pear and pineapple. 3.25/5

for me, tequila is overwhelming.has a lingering aftertaste. 3/5

I will finish this, but imo the tequila is better enjoyed along side a aal.
great tastes, but enjoy apart.but try for yourself, you may like the combo. 3/5

    cheers.

That's why the Ducks poached their QB from my alma mater - cuz apparently Nike money wasn't enough to recruit a decent QB themselves, and that was reinforced every time Big Play VA got hurt this year.

Reubens' was this brewery that I would see people wax poetic about time and again on the NW forum, and every beer I've had from them (purchased at first on the west side, more recently here in Spokane) has just been middle of the road, kinda "meh" beers. Maybe I just have to have one of their beers at their place or the magic wears off. I don't get it.

This sounds more or less how I perceived it, in case it wasn't so obvious .

But I've moved on to another beer, one I have misgivings over for my own reasons. The is a red IPA, from AleSmith, Double Red:

The head is an amazing fluffy to creamy, off-white to very light khaki in color. Clear of substance, but copper color fades any item behind the glass. Nose has a sweeter floral to berry construction. A light piney note pervades without taking the fore and reminds me this is an IPA.

A honey-like taste hits up front, followed by some floral notes. A light tang comes with these flavors before the pine cones to play. Yep, there it is-that coppery impression I get when the red-color producing malt hits the green pine hops. This one isn't as as as some.

I'd have to say this beer is on the maltier side overall. Most of the flavors produce sweeter or fruity notes. The hops come in later an more subtly. Not too bad, as expected from this brewer.
