    Hello all,

The brewery I work for has some scotch barrels and we just filled one with a RIS. I have been looking around and it is very difficult to find scotch barrel aged beers. Does anyone know any off the top of their head? I'm super anxious and I'd love to read some tasting notes.

    Cheers!

Clown Shoes flight of the angry beast was mostly scotch barrels, really didn't get any peat though, tasted to me like most other whiskey barrels

Tough to track down but Anchorage's Time Waits for No One fits the bill. The peat definitely came through.

Expect lovely, warm smells of single malt scotch, oaky bourbon barrels, smoke, sweet caramel and roasted malts, a bit of earthy spice and a scintilla of dark fruit. It’s a kick-back sipper made to excite the palate. I loved the 2015 , very nice !! check out BA. (2012 forums )......
What's the deal with peat malt?

Traditionally,Scotch Distilleries dried their Malt with peat smoke.
Many Distilleries have moved to unpeated Malt with the advancement in technology (ability to dry Malt without an open fire), but quite a number of Distilleries have kept the Tradition, especially on the Scottish Islands (most importantly Islay).

BB is aged in bourbon barrels. OP meant "Scotch" barrels not scotch ales. But it is the best.

Only Islay whiskeys are usually heavy on the peat and smoke, Lagavulin and Laphroaig for examples of great whiskeys. You might pick up a bit of smoke from other regions, but nothing like Islay. JW Lees does a Lagavulin barrel beer, and it's absolutely terrible. It's sickly sweet and does a disservice to Lagavulin, any things worth a try though. I can't think of any other beer that's aged in Scotch whiskey barrels that I've seen.

Agree with you 100%. The heavy and at times "phenolic" nature of Islay scotches--esp Laphroig--would seem to me not to lend themselves to beer. Unique and definitely acquired tastes. Lagavulin has a sweet/smoky nature (the label says "ambrosial?") but again, I struggle to see how it would integrate with beer. Sometimes unique things come together in unsuspecting ways but this would seem to be a miss.

One thing worth pointing out is the nose. Bourbon with its sweet base shines through. Same for other spirits like Cognac, sweet wines. Scotch/Irish type whisky are more "raw" and the nose part in a beer really would not seem to stand out.

Any Irish whisky beers?--that would be austere. James Joyce died 75 years ago this past week. I'll look for a sip o' Irish.

I think some of Innis & Gunn beers use scotch barrels, but they're located in Sctoland, so it's probably easier.

OK--stand corrected. Looks like a winner. Suspect it needs that 14% backbone to support the strong flavors.

What's really great about the Xyauyu beers and Baladin's other barleywines is that they are still and thus drink very differently from most beers. I buy bottle stoppers and pour an ounce or two every now and then and drink it more like I would a whiskey. Really quite an experience. I highly suggest giving them a run. Since you're in NC, I'm pretty sure Bruisin Ales gets bottles from time to time (or may still have some).
