I don't know if it was due to the hops, but I recently had the Flying Dog Single Hop Series HBC-291 and it was one of the biggest letdowns I've ever had in a beer. I love Flying Dog and have liked or loved all of the other single hop releases, but this one tasted like a lager to me. Might have been the worst DIPA I've ever had.

The breeder of that hop thinks it does well in lagers. So you got it correct. Not all hops are used for DIPAs.

I thought the Flying Dog Single Hop Ella was outstanding. Possibly one of my favorite so far from their series. Very unique flavor coming through in that hop strain (in a good way). Is there any other brewers making a splash with the Ella hop? Someone mentioned Oskar Blues IPA. Any of the current big-gun IPA brewers in this country made a Ella hop showcased IPA/DIPA that was noteworthy?

Just read the entire thread and I can't believe I'm the first one to mention this.

    IDAHO 7.

Just had Ritual Brewing's Single Rye series with this hop. Mind=Blown

Apricot forward with lotsa tropical notes and a hint of Earl Gray tea.

That makes sense and certainly explains why I had to read it in its entirety.

So much for my bold prediction, eh?

I don't know about "it" hop but mosaic is awfully popular this year. Simcoe too

Not really anything new but loving me some Galaxy hops right now. Also seeing an increase in Galaxy single hopped ipas and actually just home brewed a Galaxy Double IPA with 12oz late addition/dry hop pellets for a 5gal batch. Gonna be a juicy mother f-er, still dry hopping in the secondary at the moment, can't wait to get into that!

Eureka would be a good one to keep an eye on. You heard it here first.

I really liked the Ella-hopped Umbrella IPA from Pelican in Oregon-- it's one of their core beers now, so ignore the "no longer brewed" tag: http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/1304/164100/

Two summers ago while traveling I stopped at Schafly in St. Louis and they had a single hopped Ella IPA/PA and it was fantastic. Bought a couple growlers to take home with me. I've yet to find any other Ella hopped beers that compared.

Haven't tried the Flying Dog yet but I'm skeptical since I don't think I've ever liked anything they've produced.

i don't know if there will ever been another "it" hop on the scale of citra, simcoe, or mosaic. when citra and simcoe came out, there were few new hops being introduced and their flavor/aroma were like nothing before them. nowadays, new hops with the same outrageous tropical/pine/dank/juicy fruit/etc. are being released weekly. the space has been flooded. take mandarina bavaria for example: over-the-top citrus, nothing else like it, yet no one is declaring it the new "it" hop because it's sharing space with so many other flavor bombs.

Aside: idaho 7 has been around for a year or two...

I would love to see more Galaxy hopped ales. I have only had one that I know of and it was superb.

Tallgrass 8-Bit Pale Ale uses Galaxy hops to great effect, I was pleasantly surprised.
