I think what's being lost is that -- to get these -- I imagine one of their employees was in Boston or had to drive to Boston, go to Trillium, pay full price (all the DIPAs and DDH beers are $12 + tax so let's call it $13), drive them back to DC, etc.

50% markup on four-day old beers that you can't get anywhere else in the area is pretty damn nice compared to what any other bottle shop in DC charge for similar bottles/cans.

I was just sad there was a one-bottle limit.

It's really nice to see a DC shop using self-importation in a reasonable way. Cairo is a little out of the way for me, but i'll definitely stop back in more regularly now, out-of-market beers or not.

Amen brotha. Just got me a DDH Congress St. Looks like they still have a case or so of the assorted IPA's mentioned before. IMO it's a bargain for the sweet Trillium nectar.

Oh for sure, I understand why there's a markup, and it's definitely better than other places in DC, but it's still not a crazy deal or anything. If you don't trade, don't want to go through the hassle of trading, or just wanted to pick up one of these bottles, it's definitely worth it. But if you wanted to trade for an assortment of Trillium (say, 4 bottles), you would be getting a better deal finding someone who traded $4$, plus you'd get more than 1 bottle.

Just FYI, no sales tax in MA, so the prices are 10.05 (Congress St) and 12.05 (the others). Also, maybe I'm wrong, but it seems doubtful that they drove all the way to Boston solely to buy this beer to resell. That'd be a lot of effort to not make much money. Seems more likely someone was in Boston for another reason and decided to buy the bottles to bring back, in which case it's debatable whether it's fair to include gas, tolls etc. in the price. But since the consumer would have to do that or pay shipping to get them, it's reasonable to include some markup there.

With Canton going full steam Trillium is doing weekly bottle shipments to several stores in MA. The markup at a store versus the brewery is about a buck.

I'm a Trillium fan through and through but there is no way I'd pay that. My guess is JC wouldn't be too pleased to see them selling their beers at that price either. They self-distribute and he's said before that sending beers out of MA isn't part of his plans for the brewery.

Looks like I seriously underestimated the demand for Trillium! Good for them as long as people are happy.

This makes me long for the days when Conn. Ave. used to get stuff like fresh Heady Topper and Alpine (old school) and sell them at totally reasonable mark-ups. Think cans of Heady were only going for $8-$10!

I too was quite saddened by the one bottle limit, but respect the idea of "sharing the wealth."

Is it 1 bottle per person total or 1 bottle of each "variant" (for lack of a better word) per person

I asked that very question when trying to buy more than 1 bottle. It's 1 bottle per person total.

Was there a reason why they stopped carrying out of market beers? Their selection is still good, but I miss being able to get those random out-of-market gems.

someone else can confirm but i believe essnentially he decided it wasn't worth the trouble. Think they had to start pricing them pretty high to make any $ off of them. I remember 3Floyds bombers at $27.99 - $30 kinda sitting for awhile (understandably)

I think it was a combo of that and the owner not wanting to do out-of-market anymore. Given the amount of online beer stores nowadays, and increased distribution overall, I agree that it probably wasn't worth it. Still, I miss it too.

This is exactly what Al told me, it just got to be more work than it was worth. I'm honestly surprised no one else ever gave it a serious try after they abandoned ship though. Maybe Cairo's trying their hand at it now!
