The only reason they will be messy is because you will have been drinking for 8 hours before your time slot... lol

There's no doubt at all that this will happen with the FCFS approach. If FFF doesn't want people lining up then the blind distribution of the variants is the perfect solution. Anything else results in people wanting the "best" varient they can get which means being the first in line for your group. I'm group C and couldn't care less about vanilla but I'm sure when I see the 10 options I will want some of them more than others and will be bummed if they are all gone so I'm going to end up lining up earlier than I otherwise would.

I'm gonna laugh if there is no Vanilla. I'm sure FFF would love to screw with people and put it all on tap..1000 bottles would equal 12 half barrels...

I agree completely. And I think Group A will be particularly messy. And the following bit is a key reason why.

I think we've all seen our share of idiots at bottle releases, including DLD. There is *always* a group of people who believe they are above the rules laid out by the event (rules of common decency as well). Even if it's just 1% that's still about 100 people at DLD. Idiots + hours of alcohol = bigger idiots. I feel for the Group A folks because there will be a) people from other groups trying to scam there way into Group A to grab the 'must have' variants and b) Group A people who will line cut to get closer to the front ('Hey, just trying to get up with my buds. Here's a pour of beer A. Excuse me'). And in many cases these people have no interest in drinking the variant.

I hope the group ticket checkers have zero tolerance for people trying to jump ahead in groups (i.e, they lose their right to their allotment) and I hope folks in line don't put up with line cutting BS, because it will occur. Call that BS out.

Lastly, for the sake of efficiency and to preemptively combat what is almost guaranteed to occur, FFF please randomly pre-package the variants. Hell, I'll drive to Munster to help out with pre-packaging if you don't have the resources to do so. Just do it.

Agree on Liquor Stop and Cask and Cellar. Check both as they carry different Indiana breweries There is Delocks at 45th and Ridge Road (closest to FFF) but they have the highest prices in the area and probably mark things up more on DLD. Torrence Liquors is the closest store in IL for a good selection on Pipeworks and Revolution. Its a colorful store.

I think it's also quite possible that some of the variants are not barrel aged, but rather just Dark Lord plus some other adjuncts.

Considering upwards of 5,000 people (more?) attend, that's a shit ton of barrels. I doubt FFF has that kind of barrel program.

I love Torrence, good beer guy on staff there. Grape and Grain is probably the same distance, and you can take expressway, which saves the torrence ave/159th headache.

But uh....colorful, huh? Hoping that's a reference to the bricks outside being brown and black, and not the clientele. If not, congrats on being the perfect hoosier stereotype.

Cannibal Corpse is playing in Austria that day. I can't imagine them making it to Munster in time.
They already said they were all barrel aged.

I disagree with everybody wanting random variants, since I paid for my ticket/variant, they should let me pick from what bottles are available. (This is true in anything, if I am buying something I don't just want whatever some volunteer hands me, I want to choose for myself.) You could pick what group you were in and knew already that the variants were fcfs, and I chose group A based on wanting to have the best options available.
My hunch is most of the people that want random variants got a later group. Unfortunately for everybody that wants random, that isn't happening.

^agreed. I definitely want a choice in this. People that are saying random will end up with the earl, and be the first ones complaining

Agreed this is inevitably the way it will work but everyone (including FFF) needs to accept the shenanigans that will ensue in this model. People will line up early, lines will be cut, the system will be gamed. I reject that people "choose" a later group, many (most?) tried for the earliest sessions and didn't get them based on shear luck and nothing else. It truly doesn't matter to me but calls for people not to line up early and just enjoy the fest are altruistic but ultimately blind to the current state of craft beer.

I am having a hard time understanding why everyone thinks people in later groups will be butthurt because they cant pick from an array of variants. Three Floyds has hosted the event the same way the past 4 years I have attended, and I have never once seen someone pissed about getting any of the variant in group E (malmort excluded). This thread it heading in the direction of beer entitlement.

Just to clarify, I look forward to this event every year and the people are what keeps be coming back (those guest taps are pretty awesome as well). I cant wait to see you dipshits, and if we keep complaining the Dark Lord is going to wish bad weather upon us.... Cheers!

It is the same model they have used in previous years. They always say not to line up early, and they know that the majority won't listen. I am sure cutting goes on, but once you get into the cattle chutes, you know who you are by and it is pretty easy to see if/when somebody cuts. The main thing is people need to call out the line cutters, not just be pissed about it with their buddies.

You have a choice when selecting groups. You could select whichever one you wanted, granted you may not have been able to get that one. If you didn't care you selected best available, which in turn means you didn't care which variant you got and would take "best available" as well. If best available didn't give you the group you wanted, you had another choice which was not buy a ticket at all. At least that is how I went about it. It's a risk I was willing to take and I am glad it worked out for me.

Can't wait to see everybody there! :sunglasses:

I think it's just the mental shift that everyone gets a varient and that you "had" to buy one before knowing what it is if you wanted to attend at all that changed things this year. I'm super pumped just to get to go and really don't care about the varient situation but like to explore the idea of new ways to do things. No way to keep everyone happy in a situation like this except keep drinking awesome beers and pray for no damn rain!!

it would be a shitshow, but they've already stated that there are 10 different BA variants...and when the etix site was up it clearly stated that everyone gets a BA variant.

now....what if they run out of BA variants and people in group E get nothing?

How/why would they run out variants before Group E is finished? I would imagine they have more than enough to cover every ticket sold.

They've had a shiny, new building for over a year that could easily store enough barrels. As far as I know, they have never released a non-BA DL variant.
